SECTION 3: HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW: Urea formaldehyde concentrate contain free formaldehyde which is a

human carcinogen. Recent studies have shown that exposure to high doses formaldehyde is
associated with a rare form of nasal cancer. UFC may cause skin sensitization due to presence of
free formaldehyde. Vapor from the material irritate eyes, mucous membrane and respiratory tract.
ROUTES OF ENTRY: Inhalation, Skin/ Eye contact and Ingestion. Ingestion is an uncommon route
of exposure
ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTIOMS
EYES: A moderate to severe eye irritation may cause redness, pain, tears, blurred vision.
SKIN: Contact with skin will result in irritation. Repeated or prolonged skin contact may lead to
allergic contact dermatitis. The presence of free formaldehyde in UFC may cause skin sensitization
INHALATION: the vapor may be an irritant to mucous membrane and respiratory tract particularly
when the material is heated. Inhalation of vapor can result in headaches, dizziness and possible
nausea. The effects from exposure may be delayed.
INGESTION: Swallowing can result in nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and irritation to the
linings of the mouth, throat and gastrointestinal tract.
PRE EXISTING MEDICAL CONDITIONS: Conditions aggravated by exposure may include skin and
respiratory disorders, asthma, allergies, emphysema and psoriasis due to free formaldehyde
presence
EFFECTS OF CHRONIC EXPOSURE: formaldehyde has been classified by the International Agency
for Research on cancer (IARC) as Carcinogenic to human (Group-1 agent). Recent studies have
shown that exposure to high doses formaldehyde is associated with a rare form of nasal cancer

SECTION 4: FIRST AID MEASURES

EYES: Immediately wash eyes with large amount of water occasionally lifting the lower and upper
lids for at least for 15 minutes and get medical attention immediately.
SKIN: Immediately flush the contaminated skin with large amount of water, remove contaminated
clothing and wash the skin with water. Seek medical advice promptly

INHALATION: Immediately remove the victim form the source of exposure to fresh air at once. If
breathing has stopped perform artificial respiration. Keep the person warm and at rest. Get
medical attention as soon as possible.
INGESTION: Get medical attention immediately.

SECTION 5: FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES

FLAMMABLE LIMITS IN AIR: Not applicable

FLASH POINT: Not applicable
AUTOIGNITION TEMPERATURE: Not applicable
NFPA HAZARD CLASSIFICATION
HEALTH: 3 FLAMMABILITY: 2 REACTIVITY: 0 OTHER:
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: CO2 or Dry chemical, water spray, fog or normal foam
SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES:
Urea formaldehyde concentrate is not combustible; following evaporation of aqueous components
residual material can burn if ignited
On burning the material will emit toxic fumes (carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ammonia, oxides
of nitrogen and formaldehyde).
Fire fighters should wear positive pressure self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and Chemical
protective clothing.
UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS:
On burning the material will emit toxic fumes
HAZARDOUS COMBUSTION PRODUCTS: Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ammonia, oxides of
nitrogen and formaldehyde.

SECTION 6: ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES:

In case of spill increase ventilation. Cleanup immediately. Wear protective equipments to prevent
skin, eye contact and inhalation of vapors. Contain using sand or soil, prevent run off into drains

and water ways. Use absorbent (soil, sand, vermiculite or other inert material). Collect and seal in
properly labeled drums for disposal. Wash area down with detergent and excess water.

SECTION 7: HANDLING AND STORAGE

HANDLING AND STORAGE. Use good Industrial hygiene and safety practices. The product should be
stored in a cool well ventilated place and out of direct sunlight. If outside storage is necessary, or if
low indoor temperatures are expected, insulated storage and some means of heating the tank
should be considered. UFC tankers must be unloaded by pumps, OSHA regulations prohibit
unloading by air pressure. Optimum storage temperature 25⁰C- 35⁰C
OTHER PRECAUTIONS: Do not store near incompatible materials (Strong acids, alkalis and
oxidizing materials). Avoid excessive heat or freezing.

SECTION 8: EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION

Use process enclosure, Local exhaust, and General ventilation to keep airborne level as low as
reasonably possible.
Eyewash fountains and facilities for quickly drenching the body should be provided within the
immediate work area for emergency use where there is a possibility of exposure.
Do not eat, drink or smoke during work
PERSONAL PROTECTION
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION
Any self contained breathing apparatus that has full face piece and operated in a pressure-demand
or other positive pressure mode(APF=10,000).
Any supplied air respirator that has a full face piece and is operated in a pressure demand or other
positive pressure mode in combination with an auxiliary self contained positive pressure
breathing apparatus (APF=10,000)
Escape: Any air purifying full face piece respirator with a chin style front or back mounted
canister providing protection against Formaldehyde (APF=50).Any appropriate escape type,
self contained breathing apparatus(APF=50).

SECTION 11: TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION:
Adverse health effects are not anticipated from Methylized Urea. Toxicity of Urea formaldehyde
concentrate is mainly due to presence of free formaldehyde. Formaldehyde toxicological data’s are

CARCINOGENICITY: Formaldehyde is classified as carcinogen by IARC, ACGIH, NTP, and OSHA
CANCER SITE: Nasal cancer
IARC: Group1 Carcinogenic to humans
ACGIH: A2 Suspected human carcinogen
NTP: R, Reasonably anticipated to be human carcinogen
OSHA: listed as carcinogen
SKIN SENSITIZATION: Positive (Guinea pig)
SYNERGISTIC MATERIALS: None known

SECTION 12: ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION: Urea formaldehyde and formaldehyde does not buildup in plants and
animals. Urea formaldehyde is also used in agriculture as a controlled release source of nitrogen
fertilizer. Urea formaldehyde’s rate of decomposition into CO2 and NH3 is determined by the action
of microbes found naturally in soils. Formaldehyde in the air breaks down within a day to formic
acid and carbon monoxide. Do not contaminate domestic or irrigation water supplies, lakes,
streams, ponds rivers or sea.
