Unpublished Master’s Thesis, Saint Columban College, Pagadian City

Technology has been a fundamental part of the lives of the 21st century learners. An
emerging teaching approach that highlights technology tools and programs is Flipped
Learning: an approach where technology redirects learning from large groups to
individuals. The teacher in the flipped classroom encourages the students to watch videos
at home to prepare them for the next day. On the other hand, in the traditional classroom,
students received their instruction via lectures. Students then practiced with the learning
content by completing homework outside of the classroom. The purpose of this study was
to examine the effects of a Flipped Classroom Approach in teaching short stories. Two
grade 9 english class in Tambulig National High School participated in this study. The
quasi-experimental pre-test post-test two-group design was used in this study to explore
the effects of using flipped classroom approach in teaching short stories. One of the classes
acted as a control group and received the conventional teaching stategy. The other class
acted as the experimental group which received the Flipped Classroom Approach. The
result of this study showed that the level of students' achievement that was taught using the
flipped classroom approach was higher compared to the conventional teaching strategy in
both the first and second trial run. Using One-Way Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA),
there is a significant difference in students’ achievement when they were taught using
flipped classroom approach (experimental group) and using conventional teaching strategy
(control group) in teaching during the first trial run. Similarly, the second trial run confirms
that there is a significant difference in students’ achievement when they are taught using
Flipped Classroom Approach and using Conventional Strategy in teaching. These research
outcomes warrant the claim that with the advancement of technology and the adoption of
the flipped classroom, both teaching and learning english can be made more effective and
further imply that the utilization of flipped classroom approach should be reinforced in
teaching and learning English.
