B. Lesson Proper

a. Learning Activities
 Priming
Let us have a brief review on what
we have discussed last meeting.

What is an Ethernet?

Student: An Ethernet is a standard of

connecting two computers to each other
Very Good! through a wire.

What are the different types of

wires used in an Ethernet
connection? Student: Coaxial cable.

Student: Fiber Optic for fast internet

connection.

Student: Twisted pair; it has two types of

what is the most commonly used on
a LAN set-up? Class: UTP CABLE!

Can I ask for a volunteer to sum up

all of the answers, as to what we
have discussed last meeting? Student: To summarize, ethernet is a
standard technology of connecting two
computers together to share data, files and
other resources. And in able for two devices
to be connected to each other, a wire is
needed as a medium to do so. Though,
Ethernet is not only limited to the use of UTP
CABLE (which is the most popular one out of

Class: Yes, Ma’am.

 Motivation
Before we proceed to our next
lesson, let us first have a game.

Thank you for volunteering class.

Class, please cite the words found by

your classmates.
Thank you, class. Class: UTP, Straight, Crossover!

b. Analysis

1. What are the colors found in a UTP

cable? Student: Orange, Blue, Green, Brown, and
some striped ones.

2. What do you think is the use of UTP

cable when it comes to Student: It helps in connecting different
networking? central devices together.

3. Why do you think it is important for

you, as an ICT student to be (Student answer may vary)
equipped with knowledge and skills
on how to make an ethernet cable?

Thank you everyone for answering.

c. Abstraction
After discussing about devices that
makes up a network, as well as, the Class: Network cabling!
ethernet. What do you think is our
lesson for today?

Very Good! When it comes to

Ethernet connections, we have what
we call cabling standards.
Wherein wires inside a twisted pair
cable are arranged into a certain
order, based on the client’s intended
use.
There are generally two types of
networking cables; a straight through
and a crossover. But today we are
going to tackle the straight through
cable, as well as how to make it.

So, what is a straight through cable?

Class kindly read what’s on the (The students read the text on screen out

A straight through cable is an

arrangement of a twisted pair cable

that is used in local area networks to
connect a computer to another
network device such as a router,
and hubs.
Mainly, it is for connecting unlike
device and it is used for the
following situations:

So, what is a straight cable used for?

Class, what do you observe about the

wiring of the cable?

scheme called; T568B. Wherein it
started out with the White
Orange wire, and ended in the
Brown wire.

Does anyone have any questions on

what is a straight through cable?

Okay, good. Let me now show you Class: No, Ma’am.

how to create a straight through
cable. But first we need to have our
tools. Class what is the tool displayed Class: Crimping Tool.
on screen?

What do you think a crimping tool is

used for?

Very good! Not only it is for cutting Student: It is for cutting the wires.
the wires, it is also what we are
going to use to remove the jacket of
the UTP so that the wires will be
exposed.

As well as, it is what we are going to

use to lock the RJ-45 so that it will
not be separated from the cable.

What is the next tool?

What is it for?

Very Good! So, a LAN Tester tells the Class: LAN Tester.
technician whether or not the

arrangement of the wires is correct Student: it is used to test if the wiring is
through a series of light indicators. If correct.
you are already done with the
cabling, you should have this series
of lights going up on the tester: 1 is
to 1, 2 is to 2, and so on and so for.
And the last two things that we need
are RJ45 and UTP cable.

d. Application

Okay class, make sure that every

table is equipped with the tools
presented earlier.

Are the tools all there on your table?

Good, now I’m going over to each of

the table to show the step by step Yes, Ma’am.
process of making a straight-
through cable.
Meanwhile, for the rest of the
groups, kindly take down the
arrangement of the wires on
your notebooks, as well as the steps (The students will do so)
in creating a straight through cable.

(Each group will copy the procedure

in creating straight through cable.
While the teacher will be
demonstrating each step the
students per group will follow.)

Direction: Students will create straight

through cable using 568B color coding
arrangement, by following the steps in
creating Straight through cable.

1. Strip off suitable length of the cable

sheath.
2. Sort wires by insulation colors.
3. Align the colored wires according to
the specific order.
4. Trim all the wires to the same length.
5. Insert the wires into RJ45 plug.
6. Maintain wire order, left to right, with
RJ45 tab facing downward.
7. Crimp the RJ45 plug with the crimping
tool.
8. Verify the order of the wires is correct
making good contact with the metal
contacts in the RJ45 plug.
9. Repeat all the steps in creating the
other end of the cable.

IV. Evaluation
Students performances will be evaluated/rated using the Performance Rubrics. (the teacher will explain
how the performances will be assessed through scoring rubrics.)
