CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Internet has become a need of every one, the Internet is a public, cooperative and

self-sustaining facility accessible to hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

The internet has many uses its can use for academic purposes like research and homework,

the internet is a fantastic place to research information for a project or piece of homework.

It doesn't matter what topic you have been set, you can guarantee that you will find

something on the subject.

The internet can be used for communication it opens up many different possible ways to

communicate with others. Here are some: Email (Electronic Mail), Blogs, Social

networking sites e.g. Facebook, Myspace, Bebo, Chatrooms, Forums, Voip - internet

telephone.

Internet can be used for shopping, leisure and entertainment, there are many different ways

that you can choose to spend your time online and amuse yourself. Here are a few: Playing

online games, Listening to music (mp3 download or live streaming),Reading online books

and e-books, Watching online videos e.g. YouTube, Looking for holidays or concert

tickets, Reading about your hobbies, Keeping up-to-date with the news and sporting

events, Watching 'catch up' television from the main channels.

Internet has many benefits, one the benefits of internet is its always available, the Internet

is always available for you to use, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. You
The Use and Benefits of Internet as Perceive by Senior High School Students 2

don't have to wait for it to open or wait for someone to make it available. It is just there,

when you need it and for whatever you need.

Of course that does not mean every web site is always open. For instance it is common for

bank web sites to shut down at midnight and open again at 7am. Overnight, they are

updating and checking all the money transactions that have taken place over the last day.

One of the benefits of internet is it has a vast range of information, think of any search

term and type it into a search engine. We can pretty much guarantee that you will find web

sites with information on that term.

It doesn't matter what you want to know about, you will find something on the Internet

that can provide the information you need.

One of the benefits of internet is people are easy to contact, the Internet provides many

ways to enable you to keep in contact with people at all hours of the day and night. From

email, forums, chat rooms, telephone calls and video conferencing. You are almost spoilt

for choice.

One of the benefits of internet is that you can access to other cultures, the Internet enables

you to look at sites about or written by people in other countries. You can look at

photographs of where they live and read about their way of life.

This enables you to get a unique insight into their culture, something that just would not

be possible without actually visiting them in person, and it can help you to use this

information in other purposes like in your studies.

The Use and Benefits of Internet as Perceive by Senior High School Students 3

One of the benefits of internet is your always up-to-date, one of the main advantages of

the Internet is how fast things can be updated. When a news story breaks, the BBC

website can have that news on its pages within a couple of minutes. They can keep adding

more information as it becomes available.

If that were a newspaper, you would have to wait up to a day to read about the news.

Even news on the television takes longer to get to you than the Internet.

Internet has so many advantages like its uses and benefits and of course it has

disadvantages like abusing it on spending too much to the unnecessary things

Internet is always in our daily lives, now many people specially students are spending too

much time in the internet, social networking site is one of the cause of too much spending

time in the internet, playing computer games is one who get your time if you dont manage

your time to it, we invest too much time on this rather than doing the necessary things,

sometimes rather than doing a school work or homework or research we forget to do

them and spent our time to these social networking sites or online games.

Statement of the Problem

The aims of this study is to know how the senior high school student uses the

internet for themselves, what is internet and its purpose to the how they use it for what are

the benefits of the internet to them, how they use it for their studies, how much they use it.

This study aims to know the internet use and benefits as perceived by Senior High

School Students of Benigno S. Aquino National High School the, specific research

questions follow directly from the previously stated aims:

Chapter 2

Review of related literature and studies

Franklina, (2018) The internet is the key information and communication technology that

led to a worldwide revolutionary change in the information scenario (Siraj, et al., 2015). The

internet is a pool of knowledge and any country that fails to provide her youth access to the internet

is unseating the country from her throne of dignity among other dignitaries (Olatokun, 2008). It is

developed to serve as a platform for various activities for all age groups in society (Akin-

Adaeamola, 2014). The internet is a technology that has become an enormous part of peoples daily

lives. Through its ability to act as a support medium in different functions for which people use it,

the internet was introduced to academic institutions as a tool to enhance students academic
The Use and Benefits of Internet as Perceive by Senior High School Students 8

experience in the mid-1990s (Ngoumandjoka, 2012). Over the last decades, internet connectivity

has improved tremendously and is available everywhere such as homes, offices, travels and schools

(Ellore et al., 2014). Today, empirical studies (e.g Adedotun, 2015; Akende & Bamise, 2017)

report that access to information can influence the academic performance of students. The use of

credible internet resources is of greater importance for academic study, especially in high class

courses which require an academic review of literature (Sahin et al., 2010). Internet use for

educational purpose is found by Kim (2011) to be the heart of adolescent academic achievement.

The availability of internet is almost everywhere, most students have had access to internet on their

cellphones (Ellore et al. 2014). This helps students to broaden their academic knowledge, research

and assignments by accessing information worldwide and also enhances easy communication to the

academic community (Siraj, et al., 2015). 3 Yesilyurt et al. (2014) argued that access to a home

computer and internet connection contributes to students academic performance as well as self-

learning skills. Taking into account access and usage of internet by secondary school students in

Nigeria, Olatokun (2008) indicated that most students believed the internet to be far better and

convenient than their school libraries. They saw it as a source for general knowledge, and hence it

has helped them improve their reading habits and their academic performance. The internet is

sometimes used as a supplementary learning material and has led to an improvement in students

academic performance (Siraj et al., 2015). In Ghana, graduate students see the library as a

favorable environment for studies, and a source of relevant and realistic information for research.

However, they prefer using the internet to the library because of the fact that the latter provides

readily information at all times, faster access to information and large amount of information

(Kumah, 2015). Access to internet services is of great significance to a developing country like

Ghana (Ameyaw and Asante, 2016). Updated and current information is well organized on the

internet for easy search, and has contributed significantly to students academic laurels (Kumah,

2015). The use of the internet creates awareness of the importance of the world around students

(Ogedebe, 2012). Despite the significance of internet usage to students academic performance, its
The Use and Benefits of Internet as Perceive by Senior High School Students 9

negative impacts are various. Some students use the internet for non-academic purposes such as

gaming and social networking, thus culminating in loss of study schedules (Singh et al., 2013).

Besides, students use the internet for leisure rather than educational purposes (Olatokun, 2008;

Ngoumandjoka, 2012) and this can lead to fallen academic standards. The topmost uses of the 4

internet by secondary students is charting, downloading, watching videos online, playing online

games, and online shopping (Akin-Adramola, 2014). This suggests that some secondary students

do not receive proper guidance in the use of the internet in studying. The internet can be a bad tool

for higher academic achievement if only its usage is not controlled (Mami and Hatami-Zad, 2014).

Recent studies (e.g. Mami and Hatami-Zad, 2014; Torres-Diaz et al., 2016; Carter, 2016) have

found that a balance use of the internet leads to greater academic success among students.

University students have control over the use of internet which has greatly reflected in their

academic performance (Sahin et al., 2010).

A. Foreign Studies

Koforidua (2015) Social media has exploded as a category of online discourse

where people create content, share it, bookmark it and network at a prodigious rate.

Because of its ease of use, speed and reach, social media is fast changing the public

discourse in society and setting trends and agenda in topics that range from the

environment and politics to technology and the entertainment industry(Asur and

Huberman, 2010). In the last ten years, the online world has changed dramatically, thanks

to the invention of social media, young men and women now exchange ideas, feelings,

personal information, pictures and videos at a truly astonishing rate. Seventy-three percent

of wired American teens now use social media websites (Oberst, 2010).
The Use and Benefits of Internet as Perceive by Senior High School Students
10

Martin, (2008) & Lusk, (2010) share the same concept of social media. To them

social media is the use of Facebook, Blogs, Twitter, My Space and LinkedIn for the

purpose of communication, sharing photos as well as videos. However for the purpose of

this study social media is captured within the use of internet through Facebook, Whatsap,

Twitter, Skype, MySpace as well as Yahoo Messenger for communication sharing of ideas,

sharing of photos and videos by users. The increased use of Social Networking Websites

has become an international phenomenon in the past several years. What started out as a

hobby for some computer literate people has become a social norm and way of life for

people from all over the world (Boyd. 2007). Teenagers and young adults have especially

embraced these sites as a way to connect with their peers, share information,

reinvent their personalities, and showcase their social lives (Boyd, 2007).

Kaitlin (2010) further opines that social networking websites also affect the way

we receive information and news. The sites open up different portals through which we

get information and create more diverse news utlets. Most of the studies, Choney (2010),

San Miguel, (2009) Enriquez (2010), Karpinski & Duberstein (2009), Khan, (2009),

Kubey et al (2010), conducted on students use of the social media sites and its impact on

academic performance focused on students in the developed world. It is against this

background that it has become necessary to conduct this research aimed at investigating

students use of social media sites and their impact on academic performance among

Polytechnic students in Ghana. This is largely because; no empirical study has been

conducted in Ghana to find out the impact of students use of social media sites on

academic performance of Polytechnic students in Ghana.

Ela Goyal (2010) Using the extended task-technology fit (TTF) model, this paper

aims to examine satisfaction and usability of internet usage on students assignment

completion tasks and their performance. In the extended TTF model, technology

resistance and technology usage was also considered. The study was conducted at a

management institute in Mumbai and questionnaires were distributed to 221 post-graduate

students. The results indicate that technology satisfaction and the internet usage

significantly explains the variance on students performance. Task-technology fit is the

predictor for internet usage, whereas it is not a predictor for technology resistance.

Technology Satisfaction is the predictor of Technology resistance, students performance

and internet usage. Internet usage is the predictor of technology satisfaction and students

performance. Since these factors are found to have significant relationship with students

performance, the management and decision makers in universities and institutes need to

give higher importance as to how students could use the internet efficiently and effectively.

Harry M. Kibirige (2000) As a source of serious subject-oriented information, the

Internet has been a powerful feature in the information arena since its inception in the last quarter

of the twentieth century. It was, however, initially restricted to government contractors or major

research universities operating under the aegis of the Advanced Research Projects Network

(ARPANET).1 In the 1990s, the content and use of the Internet was expanded to include mundane

subjects covered in business, industry, education, government, entertainment, and a host of other

areas. It has become a magnanimous network of networks the measurement of whose size, impact,

and content often elude serious scholarly effort.2 Opening the Internet to common usage literally

opened the flood gates of what has come to be known as the information superhighway. Currently,

there is virtually no subject that cannot be found on the Internet in one form or another.

Elsevier Ltd (2014) The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship

between Internet Addiction (IA) and academic performance among foreign undergraduate

students in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). This study also identified the differences

in internet addiction in terms of gender and country of original. Four countries were

selected through simple random sampling; there were China, Yemen, Somalia and

Indonesia. Then, a total of 120 students were selected randomly from those countries. In

order to measure IA, Internet Addiction Test (IAT) based on Youngs (1998) survey which

modified by Pee and Shafeq (2009), was used. The data collected was analyzed using

SPSS. The statistical techniques frequency and percentage were used to identify the

patterns of using the Internet; t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to examine the

differences in IA in terms of demographic factors.

B. Local Studies

According to Arnold (2016) technology nowadays has become prevalent in our

society. It revolutionized the way people see and appreciate things especially in the fields

of education. Teachers, parents and students now realize their significance in the quest for

knowledge in this age of information technology. It makes the teachers task easier while

sustaining a high level of interest among their students. Information and Communications

Technology (ICT) in the Philippines is a milestone in the educational system. It opens a

wide variety of opportunities both for teachers and students. Transferring of information,

collecting of data and researching are the multiple benefits that people can get from ICT,

but it still a dream for many.

Iremae (2014) is the first Filipino logged on to the Internet on March 29, 1994,

when the Philippine Network Foundation obtained the countrys first public permanent

connection to the Internet (Minges, Magpantay, Firth, & Kelly, 2002). Since then, the

number of Filipino Internet users has grown, gradually at first, but with considerable

rapidity in the last few years, yet despite this substantial growth of Internet use in the

Philippines, there seems to be a scarcity of data on the Filipino Internet users online

behavior. The Yahoo!-Nielsen Net Index initiative, conducted since 2009, only gathers

data on Internet users in National Urban Philippines in the 22 major cities across the

country. In 2009, the Asia Institute of Journalism and Communication conducted for the

United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) a nationwide survey on Internet access and use

by Filipino schoolchildren.

Ma. Regina M. Hechanova (2014) This study expands the Uses and Gratification

Theory by examining Internet use and its outcomes among Filipino Internet users. It also

tests the Social Cognitive Theory by examining the role of both self and external

regulation on Internet use outcomes. The study was done in two phases. In the first phase,

interviews were conducted to elicit how the Internet is used as well as perceptions of

healthy versus problematic Internet use. In the second phase, surveys were administered to

387 respondents from all over the Philippines.

Kavita Karan, PhD. (2008) Internet is fast becoming the medium of election

communication as political parties across the world are logging on to the Internet and it is

impacting the political system and voting behaviours. An interesting phenomenon in

political communication is the use of social networking sites like Facebook, You Tube and

Friendster, that are being used as a means of election campaigning. While the popularity of

Internet is increasing in the West, elections in Asian countries are also fast adopting these

new technologies. In the recent 2007 elections in the Philippines, the Gabriela Women's

Party (GWP) won two seats, making it the first and only women's group in the country to

attain such a feat in the party list group contest.

Socorro Gultiano (2010) The Philippine Government offers free elementary and

secondary education in the country. A public elementary school is present in practically all

barangays (villages), and a public high school, in all municipalities. The government runs

the majority of secondary schools in the country. Due to rapid population growth and

increasing cost of private education, it has been reported that, since 1997, private school

enrolment in elementary and high school has been declining, while that in public schools

has been increasing.

About 40`% of the countrys public high schools have computers that have potential for

Internet connectivity. However, only 4% of these schools give students access to and

training on the use of the Internet.

Neil C. Capricho (2019) This descriptive study determined whether the quality of

internet connection at the college unit of the University of the Immaculate Conception in

Davao City is significantly related to the academic services availed of by the student

internet users. Employing stratified proportional random sampling, 365 students from the

various programs of the university measured the levels of quality of internet connection

and their availed academic services to assess the relevance of technology to the current

curriculum of the university.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

15

Students nowadays used internet in terms of their purpose, frequency and getting

source of information in different websites. Since the noble mission of the researchers is

to prepare the young generation to be aware of the everything in social media or internet

in this society.

The Internet is one of the greatest creations and gives everyone in the world

with Internet access instant access to an endless supply of knowledge and entertainment.

It has potential to improve the academic performance of the student and can unlock

every individual potentials. It opens doorways to a wealth of information, knowledge

and educational resources, increasing opportunities for learning in and beyond the

classroom.

The internet has a big impact in our study and is the easiest to meet the needs in

finding the information we want, news and a variety of necessary information can be

found on the internet, the way in which it was very easy, simply by typing the name of a

website address or search for it with the search engines, in seconds the information that

we find we get. This happens because basically their individual needs are very diverse, so

that their needs are what caused the motive to find information on a medium that most

considered accurate and fast, in this case the Internet is widely used because it offers a

variety of literature and references of knowledge in accordance with user needs.
