SUBJECT: MISSION SOL-LUNA

TO: NASA Astronauts in Room 25

ASTRONAUTS, YOU HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED A MISSION.

WELCOME TO MISSION SOL-LUNA

NASA needs you! Our Earth is running out of resources, and we

will soon need another home. In order to make sure we survive in
space, we must find a planet that is similar to ours.

Your mission, if you so choose to take it, will require you to travel
around our solar system, and to learn more about how the Earth,
Sun, and Moon move in connection with each other.

We are relying on you. You are our last hope.

Astronauts: _____________________________________

Your mission for today is the following:

- investigate online resources to learn new information
- understand orbits
- investigate the sun, moon, and Earth’s movement

PART 1: ORBIT & AXIS

IMPORTANT VOCABULARY

Astronauts- by entering this website, you are entering space. Imagine you are
floating in your suit. What do you see? Draw it on the next page.

1. Remembering what we practiced last week, play around with

“Model” and “To Scale” links.
*Make sure you both explore this link together!

2
Draw and label the orbits of Earth and the moon. Remember, an orbit is the path
that an object takes around another object.

Write down some thoughts you have here:

Describe Earth’s movements?

What is the moon’s movements?

Write a question you and your partner have about the sun, moon, or Earth’s movements?

Click the [ > ] button to get to the slide titled DAY & NIGHT.
Read and fill in the blanks here:

Earth is ____________ spinning. Each day is _____ hours. This causes day and night.

Earth spins on its ____________ and moves around the __________ at the same

time.

Read the website about the moon, and answer the following questions:

According to the yellow, white, purple, and pink sentences, what does the moon
do?

_______________________________________________________________.

How long does it take for the moon to travel around the Earth?

_________________________________________________________________

What direction does the moon travel? Circle the best answer.

clockwise- north to south counter-clockwise: West to East

Draw the moon’s movement around the Earth:

Read the article with your partner, and watch the youtube video. Fill in the box with
information:

Seasons are caused when Earth revolve around the Sun while tiled on

it’s ___________. It takes ___________ days for Earth to revolve around the sun.
Using the video, draw the Earth, its axis, and the Earth’s orbit around the sun.

PART 3: EDUCATE THE WORLD
Now that you’ve learned about revolutions and rotations, NASA would
like for you to tweet an education video to help other people understand
more about the Earth.

You have TWO tasks.

1 ] VIDEO
- Get together with another partner group- total of 4 people.
- Your video should not be longer than 2 minutes, and should show us the
movements of the Earth, Moon, and Sun.
2 ] TWEET
- Work with your group of 4 to write a tweet to go with your
video. You MUST include vocabulary: orbit, axis, rotation, and
revolution.
- You cannot have more than 140 characters. Don’t forget
about our CLASS HASHTAG: #
