Standards and Objectives:


Science Standard 4
Life Science. Students will gain an understanding of Life Science through the study of changes in
organisms over time and the nature of living things.
A. Make observations about living things and their environment using the five senses.

Writing Standard 8
With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information
from provided sources to answer a question.

Materials:
Book: Tortilla Factory

Essential Questions:
How do plants help me in my everyday life?

Enduring Understandings:
Every person and culture depends on plants for many things.

Adaptations for EL:


Students will have the option to draw and/or write for this activity. Vocabulary terms with pictures we
have discussed throughout the unit will be posted. The brainstorming activity will be on the board for
students to refer back to during independent practice. Many students have Latin American
backgrounds, so many will be able to make a connection to the story. I will complete the task
beforehand so students have an example to follow.
