craft Component Location.
1. To facilitate on-aircraft component location, a number of
methods are availabli
(a) Zones & Subzones. (Fig 1.) The aircraft is divided into
areas numbered 1 to 6. Each area is divided into smaller
areas called Zones, each zone within an area is given a
number. (zone 1 of area 1, zone 2 of area 1 etc; referred to
as Zone 11, Zone 12 etc.) These zones are further subdivided
into numbered Subzones, 111, 112, 113 etc.
(b) Station/Frame Reference Numbers. (Fig 2.) Each Station and
Frame on the aircraft is given its own unique number. The
numbers are relative to the aircraft axis datum lines:
(1) Longitudinal Axis. The numbers of the Stations and
Frames on this axis are preceded by the letter
The number is derived as a measurement in millimeters
from a point in space 1510mm from the radome tip.
Known as "x zero", this point is a reference point on
the jig that the aircraft is constructed on. Frame
X8000 therefore, is 8000mm from "x zero".
(2) Lateral Axis. The numbers of the Stations and Frames
on this axis are preceded by the letter "y". The number
is derived as a measurement in millimeters from the
aircraft centreline, which is known as "y zero"
Locations to the right of "y zero" are given a minus
value, eg. Y-285. ¥285 signifies a location 285mm to the
left of "y zero".
(3) Vertical Axis. The numbers of the Stations and Frames
on this axis are preceded by the letter "z". The nunber
is derived as a measurement in millimeters from the
Vertical Axis Datum Line, 23000. For example, 23250 is
250mm above 73000, 22750 is 250mm below the datum line.
(c) Main Frame/Rib Numbering. (Fig 2) Each main Frame and Rib on
the a/c is given a Main Frame or Rib number. Frame x8000, for
example is given the number 9.
Access al ig 3.
2. Approximately 40% of the aircrafts external surfaces are
access panels. Access to replenishment points and first line
equipment is via panels using quick release type fasteners.
All access doors and panels are identified by a three digit
number which is preceded by a letter L, R, B, T, denoting Left,
Right, Bottom or Top. The first number after the letter signifies
the area on the aircraft in which the panel is located. Panel
L117 for example, is on the LH side of the aircraft, and within
area 1, the front fuselage.
Walkways
3. Walkway areas are defined by a black hatched line painted
around the walkway boundaries and should be used at all times.
