All NMEA messages in this Multi unit should be switched off first

by going into the CONFIG Menu, NMEA Filter, ALL, then switch the
Output off (blank square).
After this is done, go into the SYSTEM Menu, Calibration, Compass
Cal, and you will have a reading for Heading in the Display.
Do a 360-degree clockwise turn slowly to check that the compass
is working properly. Proceed turning slowly clockwise and press
CAL NOW on the Multi display. The reading will freeze until the
calibration routine is done, and then it will start reading normally
again. This routine normally takes about one and a half boat turns.
You can now proceed to align the compass. Choose a steady head-
ing at medium speed in calm conditions to allow for minimum
error. Go into SYSTEM Menu, Calibration, Compass Align. Make
the necessary adjustments (+ or - ) to align your compass to your
boat’s true heading, then press ALIGN.

Re-enable the NMEA 1 & 3 outputs via the Config menu, NMEA Smart compass sensor
filter.
The procedure is now complete! You must leave the NMEA 2 out-
put disabled. If you need to use this output to send NMEA mes-
sages to another device, disconnect and isolate the green and
yellow wires from the compass and enable the NMEA 2 output.
You will then need to reconnect the wires should you need to The Smart Compass is an elec-

It can be connected directly to a
C-net Multi Display, giving head-
ing information to an accuracy of
2º or better after calibration.

Installation
Position the compass away from sources of Magnetic Interference:
n At least 3m (9ft) clearance from: speakers and Radar
Magnetrons.
n At least 1m(3ft) clearance from: battery chargers, ammeters,
power cables, engines, generators, refrigerators, air conditioners,
DC motors and other similar equipment.
n Avoid the galley or any area where magnetic material such as
tools, cans and the like are stowed.
Finding a suitable Location.
Site the compass on a vertical surface, as near as possible to the
center of pitch, roll and yaw, which is the most stable position on
the vessel. Avoid a flybridge or forward in the bow.
Use a magnetic hand compass to check the area 0.3m (1ft) in every Calibration & Alignment
direction from the proposed location for deviation. A deviation
greater than 20º will likely cause problems. Once installed, the compass must be calibrated and aligned.

Turn on electrical equipment and check for a change in heading on This is done through the C-net Multi Display with software version
your magnetic compass. If a change is observed this is not a suit- 2.11 (or higher) to which the compass is directly connected.
able location. Please select a day with calm water conditions (no current, no
wind) in order to reduce calibration error to a minimum.
