General Surveying II
I. Introduction.
II. Objective(s):
a) To determine the area of a body of water by using plumb line to measure
the depth of the water.
IV. Procedure:
A.
1. Along one side of the lake or reservoir established a reference base line
running parallel to its mid-length and set flag or markers about 1 meter apart
along this line.
2. Establish a range line perpendicular to the baseline at each of the sort up
markers. On the prolongation of each range line, toward the lake, also
establish another set of flags to mark the left and right water edges.
3. Along a selected range line stretch a chord or rope marked in every 1 meter
interval and fastens the ends of the rope to set up marker.
4. Take soundings (depth measurement) at each marked distances from the
reference point.
5. Repeat the process of stretching a rope and taking soundings at all other
established range lines.
B. COMPUTATIONS:
1. From the sample cross sectional sketch of a stream, the partial area of each
section and the total area of the cross section are determined by the following
formulas:
AA = ½ (I1)d1 AE = ½ (I5)(d4+d5)
AB = ½ (I2)(d1+d2) AF = ½ (I6)(d5+d6)
AC = ½ (I3)(d2+d3) AG = ½ (I7) d6
AD = ½ (I4)(d3+d4)
A = AA + AB +AC + AD + AE + AF + AG
Where AA, AB, AC, and etc are the areas of partial sections and A is the total area
of the cross section of the stream.
2. To determine the volume of water contained between ranges and the total
volume of water contained between ranges and the total volume of water
contained between ranges and the total volume of water in the lake.
VAB = d1(AA+AB)/2
VBC = d1(AC+AB)/2
VCD = d1(AC+AD)/2
VDE = d1(AD+AE)/2
Before the measurement is made, the survey team made first the reference line using a
rope with a 1 meter interval mark parallel to the pool and a rope with 1 meter interval mark is
set perpendicular to the reference line across the pool. Each interval on the set rope
perpendicular to the interval on the reference line they measure the depth of the pool using
plum bob with meter stick attach on it and stadia. See above table for the result.
The computed area using grid method performing sounding using stadia rod is
289.903 m3, while using the plum bob the computed area is 290.44 m3. There is a difference
of 0.537 m3 between the two methods used. The volume is computed using the formulas
given in the exercise.
The graph below shows the points of the pool where depth are measured.
VI. Conclusion
This method is quite a bit tiresome on a huge bodies of water and the
surveying party should take precautions on doing the survey. The method used in the exercise
is more accurate because of the interval of one meter. The two method used are almost the
same but since the plumb bob used a meter stick a more graduated measurement compared to
the stadia rod it is a lot more accurate, but generally the two methods basically are the same.
