Whew… what a busy Christmas season and what generous people we have in our community.
Throughout the season we gathered and dispersed 300 lbs of warm clothing to homeless older
adults thanks to our partners at Oceania PARC. Over 148 gift baskets and lovely floral
centrepieces were gifted to seniors from a variety of community partners such as Amica
Helping Hands, Home Instead, the White Rock Garden Club and a Private Donor. The reaction
from one individual who received a gift basket said: “This is so special, I have not received a
Christmas gift since my husband died several years ago.”
Let’s talk Turkey. A mere 332 community Christmas dinners were served and through our Day
Programs 290 more. I must admit that I am thankful that I don’t have turkey on the menu for a
long while.
A shout out to the many people who participated in our 50/50 fundraiser. The winning ticket
was drawn on New Year’s Eve. I understand the winner is using the prize for some of those
unplanned expenses that none of us need right around Christmas. The funds that stay with
Come Share will be ploughed back into our programs and services.
Recently we honoured our volunteers. These amazing people bring the world to shut-ins,
befriend isolated seniors, and help with Low Income Tax Returns to name few of the ways
these giving individuals are helping our community especially older adults.
I wouild like to take this opportunity to commend all our incredible volunteers.
Thank you for all your valuable time, skills and caring.
Coming up. We are working on some new exciting initiatives that will compliment our existing
services and offer more support to community older adults and their families. I hope to be able
to share the news with you in the next couple of months.
If you have some creative ideas to share, want to get involved as a Volunteer or have
suggesitons as to how we can improve our current programs – let’s chat.
Thank you for letting us be part of your life.

ID CLINIC SUCCESS

Blanche came to us for support in applying for her birth certificate. She has gone years
without official identification. The task was not only onerous and confusing, but also costly.
Over the past year Blanche has experienced a positive turn-around in her physical health,
prompting her to tackle some things that had been long-neglected in her life – like her ID. The
Community Care Coordinator at Seniors Come Share Society (SCSS) was able to support
Blanche in sending in her BC Birth Certificate application. SCSS was also able to provide a
subsidy for the $27 fee, thanks to a grant obtained from Vancity. Blanche proudly drove her
scooter in to the Community Support office with her new birth certificate after waiting only a
couple of weeks. Next, with her birth certificate in hand, she and the Community Care
Coordinator met at Driver’s Services and applied for her BCID and BC Services (medical)
photo ID cards. Blanche was more than happy to wait in line because she appreciated that
she would soon have all the ID she needed to keep moving forward in her life.

The Mobile Community Care for Seniors and ID Clinic, is a partnership between Seniors Come
Share Society, the City of Surrey, and other collaborative partners that serves to support
older adults who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness in our community. Since April of
2018, we have been able to support more than 65 older adults in applying for and obtaining for
much needed identification. Helping individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness
obtain basic identification is one step to removing barriers; providing access to secure living
conditions, financial benefits, food security and more.

Blanche called the Community Care Coordinator on January 17th and left her the most joyful
message, informing her that her BCID and BC Services medical card were in-hand. “I am just
delighted. It went so smoothly, so easily, and I could not have done it without your help. I’m
just thrilled!”

JUDY'S PAINT PROGRAM
Judy's Paint Program is an interactive class that allows
seniors to express their creative abilities through a social
setting. Themed classes over the course of the year
challenge participants to explore a variety of painting
techniques, approaches and colours.

Our previous class painted frosty Pacific North West Birch

trees in the midst of the cold winter air, using business
cards to replicate the texture of bark. Our next class will
the exploring the vibrance of the colourful emu.

BRING A LITTLE COLOR
INTO YOUR WORLD

Over the past few years you may have noticed that the world has been engaging in this
strange phenomenon of adult coloring. But what is adult coloring really? Well adult coloring is
no different then what our children or our grandchildren are partaking in. Adult coloring is a
therapeutic activity that evokes feelings of peace, enjoyment, satisfaction and revisits many
childhood memories.
Over the years researchers have found that the effects of coloring activities for people living
with dementia show positive outcomes, most notably a decrease in agitation and anxiety. This
comes from the therapeutic value of coloring -in part from a participant’s need to concentrate
and in doing so they may ‘forget’ their troubles whilst in the midst of a coloring activity.
Relaxation and meditative moods often follow causing the participant to enter a state of
“flow”.

Adult coloring has been proven to:

• Improve mood
• Relieve stress
• Reduce agitation
• Promote socialization and reminiscing
• Provide an outlet for self-expression
• Help to maintain motor function
• Improve dexterity (grip control)
• Improve hand-eye coordination
• Encourage cooperation
• Promote mindfulness (full attention & concentration required)
• Provide a sense of accomplishment
