PHILOSOPHICAL AND SOCIOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION

SYNTHESIS

Education defined as the basic tool of human development. It means-

learning and teaching. Development of innate abilities, increment in knowledge &

arts and behavioral changes are brought about in humans by education only and he

is made a civilized, cultured and able citizen. Parents are his first teacher, at home

begins his learning ability.

In this article, different philosophers, sociologist, politicians, economists,

psychologists and scientists discussed their different views on education. In the

sociological concept of education, the center of thoughts of sociologists is society.

They look and understand human in the context and perspective of its society. They

consider education as the means of development of individual and society.

Sociologists have clarified that education is the means of fulfillment of social goals

and objectives. Society has the ambitions and education of same nature, the way it

is built up. In fact, education is related with past, present and future, all three. With

this, knowledge of past, fulfillment of present and future building is done.

Education is social process from this perspective also. The second fact as

expressed by sociologists is that, education keeps on happening in the society.

Third, it is clear that education is a bi-polar process. As per them, education has two

poles-one which affects (teacher) and another which gets affected (student). By

education, there is a constant change in the lifestyle, eating & thoughts and in the

methods and tools of making an easy and comfortable life for humans. Another

name for this development is education. Thus, it is clear that human education is the

process of development, not of animals. With the help of education, humans keep

developing its civilization and culture. For this development, one generation hands

over its knowledge and skill sets to another. For this transfer, each society plans for

the social academic education.

Politicians’ center of thought is state and its machinery. They view individual

and society both in terms of its state and its machinery. They consider education as

a means of building the nation. A nation in built by superior people and superior

people are built by education. In their view— Actual education is that, which makes

superior citizens. In the economical concept of education, economist’s center of

thought is the economic resources and economic machinery of society. They

understand individual or society in terms of their economic activity. They accept

education as a productive activity. As per them, education apart from being object of

consumption is also factor of production.

However, in the psychological concept, education means training of external

organs and inner self. As per western psychologists, center of thought is body, mind

and behavior of human being. They have not been able to find the basic element of

inner self- mind, intelligence and pride. As per them, human being is a

psychophysical creature, which is innate with some powers and his growth depends

on these powers only. Hence, by education these powers should be developed first.

CRITICAL POINTS

The author’s purpose in writing the book is to discuss the meaning of

education and philosophy, explores the nature and meaning of philosophy of
education as well as the importance of various philosophical bases of education, the
impact of social theories on education, trends of social changes, cultural changes
and their impact on education and the application of modern science and
technological development on social reconstruction.
This paper argues that the social foundations of education, and particularly
the disciplines of history, philosophy and sociology of education, must continue to

play an integral role in programs of teacher education. In this context, the strongest
reasons for the requirement for future teachers is to engage with the social
foundations—some of these arguments apply to all of the foundational areas, and
some apply to specific foundational disciplines. Some of these arguments will be
familiar, some new. I conclude that if a teacher education program in the Philippines
is to be of a very high quality then it must include a strong social foundations
component.

ANALYSIS

In totality, the book is well-written and organized in such a manner that

specific topic were discussed individually. The book has clear statements the
importance of various philosophical bases of education. The major contents were
tapped and there were adequate evidences which are observed in each chapter of
the book.
The author’s language is simple and provided tables and graphs to easily
understand the content by the readers. discuss the meaning of education and
philosophy, explores the nature and meaning of philosophy of education as well as
the importance of various philosophical bases of education, the impact of social
theories on education, trends of social changes, cultural changes and their impact on
education and the application of modern science and technological development on
social reconstruction.
PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE

Education promotes socializing, helping society to remain stable. It also

prepares youngsters for adulthood, so that they step forward as leaders of the next
generation and contribute to strong families and strong communities. In modern
times there are opposing views about the practice of education. There is no general
agreement about what the young should learn either in relation to virtue or in relation
to the best life; nor is it clear whether their education ought to be directed more
towards the intellect than towards the character of the soul. And it is not certain
whether training should be directed at things useful in life, or at those conducive to
virtue, or at non-essentials. And there is no agreement as to what in fact does tend

towards virtue. Men do not all prize most highly the same virtue. So naturally they
differ also about the proper training for it.
I believe that the key to a happy and successful life is having the choice to
dream freely and achieve what you really want whether it is being a professional
teacher, an engineer etc. The only way to reach this kind of goal is through
education. This is why education is very important.
As a teacher, I’m aiming to prepare my students for real life experiences. This
made me realize the importance of the teacher’s role inside the classroom by being
a role model and mentor. In the past ten years that I’ve been teaching, I observed
that students have different styles in learning. That is why I learned how to
accommodate all of these types and plan my lesson to ensure that each student
receives information in the best possible way.
