Agra Lucknow Expressway

The Agra Lucknow Expressway/ Taj Expressway is a 302 km tolled controlled-access highway or
expressway, constructed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority to reduce traffic
in already congested roads and to reduce pollution and carbon footprint. It is the longest
expressway in India. The Taj Expressway reduced the distance between the cities of Agra and Lucknow in
the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is a 6-lane expressway which is expandable to 8-lanes in future. It was
completed and inaugurated on 21 November 2016 by the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav.
It is widely seen as his dream project and the flagship model of development in the state, being the first of its
kind to be completed in the shortest span of time.

he cost of project was expected to be ₹15,000 crore (equivalent to ₹160 billion or US$2.2 billion in 2018) but
was completed in ₹13,200 crore (equivalent to ₹140 billion or US$2.0 billion in 2018) and in record time of 22
months. It would cut travel time between Lucknow and Agra from 6 hours to 3:30 hours. The expressway is 6-
lane wide (expandable to 8-lane in future) although the structures (major, minor bridges and underpasses) on the
expressway are already being constructed as 8-laned to be in tune with the expanded width of the expressway in
future. It is proposed on minimum distance and minimal agricultural land formula and will be financed by
the Government of Uttar Pradesh. The Expressway will carry all public amenities viz. underpasses, service
roads, provision for green belt, rest houses, petrol pumps, service centers, restaurants and four agricultural
mandis for milk, potatoes, grains, fruits and vegetables.

Greenfield Project

The Agra-Lucknow Expressway is considered to be a Greenfield project as there were no work constraints of
existing buildings or infrastructure. Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA)
purchased almost 3127 hectares of land without a murmur of dissent and decided to pay four times the circle
rates (CR) to the land owners in rural areas and twice the CR in urban parts, as purchase cost. The rest of land
was acquired through land acquisition method.
Akhilesh's gift to Ghaziabad
While presenting the 4th budget, CM said that UP is going on the path of prosperity. The amount of this budget
is 10.2 percent more than the previous budget. Rs. 425 crores has been approved for Akhilesh's dream project
Lucknow Metro. The budget that was presented by Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday also contained good news for
the people of Ghaziabad. In the budget of Akhilesh, Rs 1839 crore has been approved for expansion of Delhi
Metro of UP. With this amount Delhi Metro will be expanded in Ghaziabad. Now Vaishali is the last station in
Ghaziabad district. This line will be extended 11 km further, so that people will get enough access to Delhi and
Noida.
Akhilesh launches free, 24x7 ambulance service.
A free-of-cost, round-the-clock emergency ambulance service, Samajwadi Swastha Sewa, has been launched in
Uttar Pradesh on the eve of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav completing six months in office. Upon receiving a

Mr. Yadav flagged off 133 fully-equipped ambulances, after giving the keys to one of the drivers at his official
residence here on Friday.

On August 22, he launched the Uttar Pradesh Ambulance Service, under which 200 vehicles have been
deployed in 75 districts.

The Samajwadi Swastha Sewa, functioning under the National Rural Health Mission, will incorporate a total of
988 fully-equipped ambulances in the days to come. The 133 ambulances flagged off under Phase-I will render
medical service in each development block of 13 districts.

Police have bagged the prestigious Global Icon Award 2017 at Las Vegas for its Dial 100 service, the one-stop
service for all emergencies.

Rahul Srivastava, a spokesperson from the UP DGP’s office, said, UP police was given the award at the annual
conference of Hexagon Safety and Infrastructure.

UP shared the honour with US Marine Corps System Command Virginia, USA. Others who were given awards
in different categories include Bayenwerk (Germany), Bell (Canada) and US Marine Corps System Command
Virginia, USA).

The police alert system was one of the major initiatives undertaken by the erstwhile Akhilesh Yadav
government. The project was launched in December 2016.

“Uttar Pradesh Police has become a role model for other police organizations to follow – in India and beyond,”
said Steven Cost, president, Hexagon Safety and Infrastructure. “We are honoured to support UP Police and the
very important Dial 100 project and congratulate the agency on its 2017 Icon Award.”

Two hundred fifty call takers, 150 dispatchers and thousands of field officers use I/CAD applications to respond
to citizen needs. Before UP 100, police received around 3,500 calls per day across the entire state.

Now, the event volume (when police take action on a call) is about 18,000 per day and call volume is about
100,000 per day. Police expect these to greatly expand as the system becomes more familiar to citizens. During
Holi, police created more than 25,000 events in a day, and received more than 50,000 calls over three days.
Rural areas are benefitting the most, where response time has been cut by half.
