THE BIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT

1. Prenatal period-This period is from conception to birth. During this period all parts of the human body
are formed. The inherited characteristics from the parents are also imparted to the child.

2. Babyhood- It is from birth to 2 years. Basic physical and physiological patterns begin to develop such
as rolling, crawling, sitting, standing, walking, talking and others. This is the oral stage when the child
enjoys sucking his fingers, toes, and anything he happens to take hold of.

3. Early Childhood- From 2-6 years. This is the preschool age. The child wants to explore and ask too
many questions. He enjoys playing his sex organ.

4. Late childhood- From 6/7 - 11/12 years. Elementary school period. The child learns some annual skills
.taught at home and in school .

5.Puberty- Starts about 12/13 -14/15 years. The stage when the urge of sex begins to assert itself very
rapidly.

6. Early adolescence- From puberty - 17 years. Late high school period. Rapid sex maturation occurs.

7. Late adolescence- 18-21 years. The youth in college are now preparing for their
professional/vocational careers.

8. Early adulthood- 21-40 years. New life adjustments occur such as courtship, marriage, parenthood,
employment, etc. This is the start of productive years.

9. Middle age- 40-65 years. The time for the preparation of retirement. Some physical and physiological
functionings begin to deteriorate.


10. Old age- Starts at 65 years. This is the period of retirement. The physical, physiological and mental
functionings continue to decline.
