Preface
All praise is due to Allah Lord of the universe and may his infinite peace and salutations be upon our Master
Sayidduna Muhammad as he is the source of all blessings in this world and the next.

Mankind has been created to fulfil a specific purpose. The majority of creation is failing to realise its very
nature of being created and as a consequence it pursues materialistic
materialistic objects of the world, most notably, the
love of wealth, the love of the opposite gender, the love of fame and name and self-centeredness.
self centeredness.

How does mankind fulfil its true purpose of existence? As mentioned in the Holy Qur’an Allah has created
jinn and
d mankind to worship him. Mankind can only attain success in both worlds by pleasing Allah . The
pleasure of Allah can only be achieved if a person follows in the practical footsteps of his beloved Sayidduna
Muhammad .

The Nafs and Shaitaan attempt to deviate

deviate a person from the true path and lead it to the road to hell and
eternal destruction. This short booklet is a practical guide on how one can free themselves from the shackles
of shaitaan across the different facets of everyday life.

Section One: highlights

lights our true purpose and presents our life as a short story, starting from the very
beginning where we all made a promise with Allah and then continues with the subsequent transitional
parts of the journey which our spirits take, reaching either a blissful
blissful temporal resting place or a pit of fire.

Section Two: depicts our life as a movie which will be played back to us in the court of Allah on the day of
judgement, where we will find out whether we have been the star of the movie or the villain!

Section Three: illustrates the modern diseases of our time, namely love of the opposite gender, love of wealth
and the means of acquiring it to please oneself and the family structure. Does a person adopt Halal or Haram
means?

Section Four: discusses the blessing

sing of time and how it should be used to attain the pleasure of Allah

Section Five: defines laziness and the practical cures one can adopt to rid oneself from such an invisible and
cancerous ailment, which is very much apparent today

Section Six: draws a person back to Allah through the gate of repentance or tawbah by learning the correct
methodology and the main conditions.

Section Seven: focuses on the common vices of our society, such as drinking alcohol, drugs, women and music.
These evil sins can become
ecome lifetime habits leading person to ultimate destruction

Section Eight: brings a person back to harmony through preserving a prosperous, modern, marital and family
life.

Our Story - Who are we?

"And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me" (Ad-Dhariyaat verse 56)

When a person will start to gaze and ponder upon the creation in the heavens and earth,
one begins to notice that everything has a set function/purpose.
• The Sun gives light and heat
• The sky sends rain upon the earth
• The tree gives out oxygen so we may breath
• the bees go round and pollinate and give honey
• the cow giving us milk and meat

Mankind is so busy with his life that he forgets about his own self. Indeed it is trap of
shyataan that he preoccupies us with our jobs, our families, our social life. He immerses us
even deeper to this world whereby we begin feel and believe that this is the real life and
makes us forget about the life of the hereafter which is our final abode.

Trick of shaytaan
• Busy the individual to the dunya > result > forget Allah and Aakhirah
o entrap him with people
o entrap him with wealth and power

Firstly we need to ask ourselves some fundamental questions so that we don't live a life of
cycles, life of rituals of:
• wake up> go to work> eat> have sexual relation>sleep.
This is what animals do and mankind is meant to be one of the most honourable creation
yet we live a lifestyle similar to animals and sometimes if not worse.

Fundamental questions:
• who am I?
o physical body
o soul - we are the soul
o John/Paul/Basheer
• where did I come from?
o my mother & father
o I dont know - dangerous - you should then find out
o somewhere
o world of spirits - we came from world of spirits
• what is my purpose of being here on the face of the earth?
o eat and drink
o live life to the max
o enjoyment & fun
o worship our lord - we are here to worship our lord
o follow our desire
o I don't know
• where am I going to go after this temporal worldly life?
o go to the grave - the world of barzakh
6
o that's it - no life after death
o reincarnation

Four important incidents that took place at the world of spirit

• First Assembly: the amaanah (trust) of freedom of will was given to human beings
• Second Assembly : the covenant of Loyalty - affirming that Allah is our creator and
Lord
• Third Assembly : Muhammadiyah covenant - attesting the we shall love, follow, help
and support the Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wasallam)
• Fourth Assembly: Covenant of Obedience - that shaytaan is our enemy and we will
not follow him

Misconception of freedom of will

If you were asked what is freedom of will? many would respond to saying that it means you
can do whatever you want.
warning! > if this answer is correct > many people don't wish to die, they wish not to fall ill,
they want to be wealthy, but that is not in their control. If you suffered from stroke and one
side of your body is paralysed, if you could do what you want then make it un-paralysed.
BUT you can't! so what does freedom of will actually mean?

• Freedom of will is limited to just once choice a servant has - either obey Allah
Azzawajal or disobey Allah Azawajal for every given scenario you are placed in.
Everything else is not in his control!

It is important that mankind understands why Allah Azzawajal has placed us on the face of
the earth. Our Soul was sent here from the world of spirits. Only He knows best as to why
He sent us here and to help us answer the question 'why', He sent down to us, the Quran, a
book of guidance. We ask every question to the Quran, why? because it is as though Allah is
speaking to us, asking the Quran is like asking Allah Azzawajal. He is our Creator, He has
sent us here, He is the best and only being who can answer the question of the purpose of
our life, why we are here. All other people; philosophers, scientist, worldly people, will be
answering from their whims and conjecture. They are all guessing and doing guess work.
They are human beings like me and you and have no authority to dictate to you who you are
and what you should do. It is only Allah who has the authority and those whom he has given
the authority such as the Prophets and Messengers (Alaihim Salaam) who can dictate to you
the purpose of our life and where we came from and where we are going to go.

"Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one
another and competition in increase of wealth and children" (Surah Al Hadid verse 20)

Have you ever considered what it would be like to be a famous movie star? the lifestyle that
they lead, the fans who adore and idolise them. Fans who will copy every move that they
make, follow them every place that they go to.
Let us consider what it takes to make a movie; you may need the following:
• actors
• script
• director
• stage
• camera
• producer
• money (budget)

Now let us think what a movie consist of;

• plot
• genre
o comedy
o horror
o action
o romance
• beginning, middle and end
• suspense
• hero/villain

aftermath of movie:
• awards for best:
o actor/actress
o movie
o script
• success/failure
• audience view in cinema/dvd/tv

Our life is like a long movie which is being played out on the big arena/stage of this world
whose effects are real life. We are all actors playing in the movie of our life. This movie has
all the genres mixed into one; comedy, horror, action, thriller, romance etc. It also has hero
and villains.
• Every moment there is a camera upon us recording our every step.
• We all have a script and we need a director to guide us as to how to we should act
out the script. Once the shooting is over the director will then edit it so that the
audience will see the best film footage only.
• If the audience like the movie, the actors will get rewarded with an award for his
acting.

8
• through this he may go on to become famous to the people.

Summary of the movie analogy:

• Movie > Is our life. Just like every movie, it has a beginning, a middle and end, and
the most important part of the movie is the ending, you ask yourself,
o how will my ending be like?
• Actors > Everyone of us. We are all playing out our film of life, we have own roles.
we can all become hero for someone or villain for someone.
• Script > the Quran is our script of how we should live our life on the face of the
earth
• Director > if you want your movie to be successful, you select the best director to
guarantee a hit! the best director is none other than Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi
wasallam). He knows best how we should act out the script as he was the walking,
talking Quran!
• Camera > Angels recording our deeds every single moment which shall be presented
to Allah Azzawajal
• Audience > We are acting the movie of our life in the presence of Allah and the
Angels. Rasulullah wants the audience to see the best action from you so that you
can become liked and loved by Allah Azzawajal
• Budget (money) > the bigger the budget, the bigger the movie. Your time and
energy, the more you devote yourself to Rasulullah the greater will be your reward
• Rewards > for good acting is Oscar > you become a star> in this life and aakhirah you
become a star in the sight of Allah and His Messenger

"Verily the life of man is in the life of his heart and his soul. And there is no life in the heart
except by knowing its Creator, having love for Him, worshipping Him solely, turning to Him in
times of need, and seeking tranquillity with His remembrance. And he who loses this life has
lost all good. Even if he attempts to substitute (this loss) with all that is in the world. For
verily not even all of the world together would be able to replace this life. And verily for
everything that a slave loses there is a substitute, but the one who loses Allah will never find
anything to replace Him." [Related by Ibn al-Qayyim in ad-Da' wad-Dawa Fasl 49]

"Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up
sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment
of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return." [Surah Al Imran verse 13]

The meaning of test is that there will be some difficulty

Allah Azzawajal has laid down as to how he will test his servants:
1. desires - attraction
2. women
3. children
4. wealth - money and big bank balance
5. branded horses (cars)
6. cattle (livestock) Social Status and Honour
7. land (properties/land)

These stages/sequences of test will mimic your life, it will commence when reach maturity
(baaligh)around 12-14 years of age.

Remember if you are thinking why am I attracted to these elements, the answer is given in
beginning of the verse, that, Allah Azzawajal has deliberately created attraction for the
person in these things otherwise there is no test.

1st test - will dominate a person until the age of about 30 - love of women or for women,
love of men - youngsters will only have to fight shataan and nafs on one level.
secret of how to be successful in this test is:
DO NOT ADOPT THOSE MEANS THAT TAKE YOU TO ZINAA
• cycle of entrapment from shaytaan: look > like> befriend> love!
• save yourself by guarding your gazes and guarding your mind by not entertaining the
thoughts of women

2nd test - love of children : the excessive love of children that a person wants the best for
their children, but may not have the finance to support the child/children - the test is:
• DOES HE /SHE ACQUIRE THE WEALTH LAWFULLY OR UNLAWFULLY

3rd test - Heaps of Gold and Silver - Big Bank Balance

10
before marriage only worried about himself, then after marriage had to think about wife
and children, they make demands for clothing, gifts, holidays etc.. shaytaan traps him by
making him think - if I have a big bank balance I can satisfy everyone.
This test has three levels:
1. basic needs are not being fulfilled - so does he defraud, steal, sell haraam
2. Basic Needs fulfilled but wants a bit of desire fulfilled - bills are paid off
but wants to decorate house, buy house, car etc
3. desire fulfilled but want to raise their status - get trapped by looking at
those who have more than them
4th test - Branded horses, cattle, land - Love of honour and social status. Hence why they
enter politics despite having amassed so much wealth, so that they can now rule others with
their wealth. This can also happen in religious activities as well, a person begins to practice
then expects people to respect him etc

How to be successful in passing the test that Allah Azzawajal will send upon us lie in
following the Quran and Sunnah, in there, the answer is emulating the Messenger of Allah
(Sallallahu Alaihi Wasllam), following his way is the balanced approach that is needed so
that we can carry the burden of test that is being placed upon us.

On the authority of Abu al-’Abbas Sahl bin Sa’ad as-Sa’idee (may Allah be pleased with him)
who said:

A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, “O
Messenger of Allah, direct me to an act which, if I do it, [will cause] Allah to love me and the
people to love me.” So he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Renounce the
world and Allah will love you, and renounce what the people possess and the people will love
you.” A hasan hadeeth related by Ibn Majah

Hazrat Hasan al-Basri (Rahimahullah) had some wise words concerning the dunya when he
said:
"So beware of this land (the dunya) that is falling down and is misleading and deceiving,
being decorated by its deceit and having eluded (others) by its delusion, and having killed its
people with its hopes. It looks forward with anticipation towards the one who proposes to it
for marriage. Hence it becomes like the unveiled bride - all the eyes are looking towards it,
and the souls are in love with it, and the hearts are captivated by it."

Hadith
Take advantage of five blessings before it's taken away

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (Radhiallahuanhuma) reported that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam) said,
"Take advantage of five matters before five other matters:
1. Your youth, before you become old;
2. and your health, before you fall sick;
3. and your richness, before you become poor;
4. your free time before you become busy;
5. and your life, before your death." [Al-Haakim, Musnad Imam Ahmad]

The Blessed Teachings of Hazrat Imam Ghazaali [Rahimahullah] Regarding Time

You should not neglect time or use it haphazardly; on the contrary you should bring yourself
to account, structure your litanies and other practices during each day and night and assign
to each period during the day and night a fixed and specific function.

12
This is how to bring about the spiritual blessings [barakah] in each period. But if you leave
yourself adrift, aimlessly wondering as cattle do, not knowing how to occupy yourself, at
every moment your time will be lost.

It is nothing other than your life and your life is the capital that you make use of to reach
perpetual felicity in the proximity of Allah, the Exalted.

Each of your breaths is a priceless jewel, since each of them is irreplaceable and once gone,
can never be retrieved.

Do not be like the deceived fools who are joyous because each day their wealth increases
while their life shortens. What good is in an increase in wealth when life grows shorter,
therefore, be joyous only in increase of knowledge and good works for they are your
companions who will accompany you in your grave when your family, wealth, children and
friends stay behind.

Imam Shaafi (Rahimahullah) saying:

"Time is like a sword, if you don't cut it, it will cut you"

Practical solution on Time Management will be demonstrated so that we may learn how to
structure our time in the best possible way which will help in getting maximum achievement
and benefit from our activities.

"And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing [themselves to] the people and not
remembering Allah except a little" (surah An-Nisa verse 142)

Definition of Laziness
• The quality of intentionally not doing a task in spite of having the ability to do so
[Sheikh Ahmad Dabbāgh]

Dr Neel Burton wrote on the Psychology of Laziness that:

A person is being lazy if he or she is able to carry out some activity that he/she ought to
carry out, but is disinclined to do so because of the effort involved.
Instead, he/she carries out the activity perfunctorily(superficially); or engages in some
other, less strenuous or less boring activity; or remains idle

Procrastination
To procrastinate is to postpone a task in favour of other tasks, which, though perceived as
easier or more pleasurable, are typically less important or urgent. To postpone a task for
constructive or strategic purposes does not amount to procrastination.
https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/hide-and-seek/201410/the-psychology-laziness

• Saalik - the one travelling on the path

• Waaqif - the one that has stopped or is stationary on the path
• Raaji' - the one who turns back from the path

Hazrat Nizaam Ud-Deen Awliayh (Rahimahullah) has stated that there are seven degrees of
Laziness and that at each stage if a person persist in them then it can be very harmful and
dangerous for the person
1. h7* - turning away - stops doing amaal and good deeds that he was
performing. If he persists on this and doesn't seek cure then he falls into the
next stage
2. VF - veil- between the person and Allah - still if no cure is sought then he
falls to next stage
3. La8! - separation - between the person and Allah; he has forgotten Allah and
indulging in desires of nafs and shaytaan, Allah has no need for him
4. %i0 4a - confiscation of extra blessings - special help/blessings from Allah
was sent due to his performance of good deeds, now they are taken away. If
he still persists
5. "% 4a - confiscation of primary blessings - initial goodness in the person
before embarking on the path e.g. he used to pray, recite Quran etc is taken
away due to him being unthankful
6. :\E! - contentment - person's heart content with the separation - he says 'I
don't need Allah, I am happy with my own way, you go your way, I go my
way' that's why fire worshippers are content with worshipping fire

14
7. 1* - enmity - if he still doesn't return, it gives rise to enmity when good
things are mentioned to him he will respond 'oh I am not going to listen to
you, I am the teacher of darkness!' he turns completely evil - evil shayateens
and jinaats are in this state.
• there is one stage further which is ‫ ختم القلوب‬seal of the heart - no cure - no turning
back

Hazrat Mujaddad (Rahimahullah) said:

“That tiny bit of wisdom which is the essence of mysticism is:

‘If you feel lazy about carrying out an act of obedience, challenge laziness and carry it out.
And if you have an urge for sin, challenge the urge and stay away from that sin.’

One who can do this needs just about nothing beyond it because this very act of wisdom
helps establish communion with Allah Ta'ala and this is His guard on duty and this is His

Practical Cure for Laziness

The cure for lazy people is steadfastness, this is what the individual is actually seeking.
• Control the time before it controls you.
A person should make a timetable for a day which is practically implementable and doable
then practice that timetable for 30 days. When you will do this for 30 days, your mind and
everything will become moulded into the schedule, it will become habitual and you will get
used to it. The timetable should be such that it should be workable or doable in ones whole
life, not just for week or month. Thus, you should keep in mind about your work and that
sometimes you may have to go somewhere, so you should make it in such a way that it is
adjustable to different scenarios and situation thus accommodating the situation you are
under. It should be a realistic, ground reality type of timetable and not the idealistic one.

The violation of the practice of steadfastness would be that if any day you don’t carry out
the tasks then place a cross on the sheet. For example a person doesn’t do the tasks set out
and he is on 3rd day, then he would put a cross and start all over again.

Inshallah you will benefit from this but don’t make the timetable in such a way that it is not
workable, meaning that it's not idealistic.

Wasting time is sometimes from a result point of view worse than sins because when a
person repents from his sins, regrets, or learns a lesson from it he benefits. But when
wasting time there is no chance for you to benefit from it and you will suffer.

To some people shaytaan cannot make them do sin but he is shortening his/their life by
wasting their time. So they are themselves shortening their life by wasting time.

Try to fully practice on this advice because you have limited time in this life and there's a lot
of work to do.

And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed. (Surah An- Nur v31)

The Meaning of Tawbah (Repentance):

Repentance is the door to the palace of the closeness of Allah through which the sinful can
enter.
The literal meaning of Tawbah is to return,

Sheikh Ahmad Ibn Ajeebah (Rahimahullah) has state said that there are three types tawbah
depending on category of person. He (Rahimahullah) said regarding tawbah:
"repentance is to return from every deed that is ugly to one that is beautiful, from every trait
that is debased to one that is noble or from a mind that is engrossed in the world to one
immersed in the consciousness of the divine. "

In other words it is:

• when a sinful person returns from the sinful life to a righteous one,
• from the way leading to hellfire to the way to paradise,
• from the world to the hereafter,
• from the obedience of the satan to the obedience of the Prophet (Peace be upon him),
• from all other than Allah to Allah Azzawajal

Shaykh Ahmad Dabbāgh once said,

"If you have committed a sin in hidden, and Allah Azzawajal has hidden your sins from
others then you must truly repent to Allah in hidden as well and thank Him for the veiling"

Sheikh Ahmad Zarruq (Rahimahullah) advised:

"...a servant is never free of either blunders or shortcomings or lassitude(tiredness),
therefore, never be neglectful of tawbah (repentance) and never turn away from the act of
returning to Allah Ta'ala and never neglect acts that bring you closer to Allah Ta'ala. Indeed
every time one of these three occurs, repent and return. Every time you make a mistake,
listen and obey. Anytime you display shortcomings or show lack of enthusiasm, don’t desist
in your efforts."

Types of Repentance
Sheikh Ahmad Ibn Ajeebah (Rahimahullah) has stated that:
• for general believers - the repentance is from sins
• for the elect - repentance is from faults
• the elect of the elect - repentance from everything that distracts the soul from divine
presence
Every station of the way (path to pleasure of Allah) necessitates repentance. In the station
of repentance itself, another repentance is needed if the first one lacks sincerity.

Syyiduna Abdul Qadir Jilani (Rahiahullah) once addressed in his discourse:

"O my people! Repent for having abandoned pious devotion (taqwa). Pious devotion is a
remedy and giving it up is an illness. The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said to his
16
companions, one day; "Shall I not tell you what is your remedy and what is your sickness?"
they said: "Oh yes, O Messenger of Allah!" So He (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: "your
sickness is sins, and your remedy is repentance" (Al Ghunya)
Sins make the faith ill, and a cure for them is the regular attendance at the sessions of
remembrance (dhikr) and obedience to the Lord of Truth (Almighty and Glorious is He).

On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say,
“Allah the Almighty has said: ‘O Son of Adam, as long as you invoke Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive
you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O Son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds
of the sky and you then asked forgiveness from Me, I would forgive you. O Son of Adam, were you to
come to Me with sins nearly as great as the Earth, and were you then to face Me, ascribing no
partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it [too].’ ” It was related by at-
Tirmidhi

Four conditions of tawbah

1. To be regretful and shameful of what one has done
2. Immediately abandon the sin from which one is repenting
3. To make a firm intention not to return to the sin
4. If one has violated the rights of Allah, Prophet (Peace be upon him), or any of the creation
then one must fulfill them in an appropriate manner outlined in the Islamic Law (Shariah)

Doubts and satanic thoughts which stops a person from repenting

• Sometimes the person says that I want to repent but what is the guarantee that Allah will
forgive me
• My sins are so many that they are unforgivable
• I keep on falling for the same sin - I can't leave it
• I'll wait until I get older and repent properly

You are not the forgiver but rather it is Allah. Allah the Exalted says: “Oh son of Adam if your sins
were to reach the heavens and then were you to seek forgiveness from Me then I would forgive”.

Syyiduna Abdul Qadir Jilani (Rahimahullah) advised once,

"O Young man! Do not overestimate the value of a deed, for deeds are valued according to their
ultimate outcomes. You must beg the Lord of Truth (Almighty and Glorious is He) to make your
outcome good, and to restrict you to those actions that He likes best. Beware, then gain beware,
when you repent, lest you undo your repentance and lapse back into sin. Do not lapse from your
repentance because of something someone may say. Do not conform to your Lower self (nafs), your
Passions (Hawa) and natural impulses (tab), while opposing your Master (Almighty and Glorious is
He) (Al Ghunya)

Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and
gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not
desist? (Surah Al Maaidah verse 5)

Some of the biggest problems that is facing our youth is that they are turning to drugs,
alcohol, women to seek pleasure as they are constantly being reminded of the enjoyment of
these things through movies, tv, internet and social media. We are living in a time where a
12 year will be called gay or lesbian if they have a boyfriend or girlfriend. let us ask
ourselves why do youngsters as well as adults turn to these things:

Women: Drugs
o Fallen in love o Peer pressure
o Comfort o Influence of friends –feel left out
o Attraction o Want to feel ecstasy / high/ buzz >love
o Influence of Movies/TV/friends for it
o Fashionable o Fashionable – keep up with the times
o Lonely and want o Depression
companionship/fantasize o Want to feel alive
o Plenty of money

Alcohol Music
o Friends o Depending on your mood
o Want to be sociable o Head banging
o Drown their sorrows/grievance o Party jumping
o Enjoy it/have a good time o Broken hearted
o Fashionable o Feeling active and energetic
o Calm down and relax
o Fashionable – headphone, ipod

Without self restraint and quick action a person can fall prey to becoming addicted to the
above mentioned intoxicants.
It can be said regarding these forms of addiction, that, what the individual wants from these
intoxicants and desires are comfort, peace, enjoyment and bliss. Unfortunately, these
things only give temporal enjoyment and pleasure but it never last and almost always there
will be some pain followed by it.

Actual reason why people fall for these categories

THE FAILURE TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN PLEASURE AND PEACE!

Indeed a person gets pleasure by having the girl he wants, taking a pill to get high, drinking a
glass of wine or listening to their favourite music > these pleasure DO NOT LAST NOR DO
THEY GIVE YOU PEACE why?
18
Because ALLAH IS PEACE, HE IS THE SOURCE, HE IS THE BESTOWER OF PEACE and if you
are searching for peace in anything other than Allah Azzawajal, then how will you find it?

Let us look at the loss or pain the person suffers

Women: you spend your money, your time and effort upon her but many a times it is never
enough for her. You always have to buy better gifts, buy more gifts, have to dress better,
behave better, in the end you start to present a superficial you which isn’t you! Then comes
the rejection! And break up! All that money, all that time, all that effort just gone and
wasted!

Drugs: it starts of as a social thing, it's fun and trendy to have a bit here and bit there. Then
the body becomes accustomed to it, so it doesn’t feel the effect as much, so the person
then wants to try stronger stuff, which will last a bit longer and give an even higher level of
enjoyment. A person carries on with this cycle, spending all his money and destroying his
body and mind at the same process. Eventually when his money runs out, he starts to
borrow or steal. He loses jobs, family, house, becomes a reject in society. Was that
temporal joy really worth it?

Alcohol: very similar to the loss of the person addicted to drugs. except this person may
turn to alcohol due to loss of job, family, friend. They try to forget the loss but that doesn't
last long so they turn to alcohol again

Music: people spending their weekends going clubs and disco to jump about, wave their
hands, shake their heads to the music, some have to queue for hours before they can enter
the club. Some will be flirting, others fighting all due to the presence of alcohol, drugs and
women.

Like the Quranic verse stated at the beginning, the sole purpose of these intoxicants are to
take you away from remembering Allah Azzawajal!

Alternatives that give you peace:

1. if you like women - look to women of Aakhirah - the hoors which Allah Azzawajal has
mentioned in the quran. If you are those who like beauty of ahklaaq, then look to the
Awliyallah > Prophet> Allah Himself

2. if you like alcohol and want to drown your sorrows and forget about everything > do the
dhikr of Allah and forget about everything and everyone else apart from Him

3. if you love to take drugs - take the pill of the love Allah and His Messenger, once taken, a
person will want more and more

4. if you like music and like to dance - in music the singer is praising a woman, gang,
weather > why not praise Allah instead. Salah (prayer), Tawaf is like a spiritual dance.
Partake in the gatherings of dhikr and really let your soul move and sway to the dhikr of
Allah Azzawajal

commitment, sacrifices and compromise from both parties to ensure the marriage works
where loyalty and trust will play a key part.

come into your life, will not come into your marriage unless you work on yourselves and
practically manifest it. To help you do that, one should enrol upon an course of self-
improvement, self- purification known as Tareeqah Muhammadiyah. Marriage is no light
matter, its half of your imaan, which means a person will get severely tested so take it upon
yourself, to strengthen yourself, so that you are best prepared for what is to come in
marriage and if you are already married, to help you ease the burden of marriage.

21
The Four Types of Imaan

There is nothing more precious than imaan. It is so precious that it will determine whether
you will live in Jannah or not. Imaan will get you salvation from hell. It is a Precious gift given
by Allah Azzzawajal that He wants us to look after it, maintain it, strengthen it, beautify it,
but more importantly He wants us to return back to Him with it!! And this will be
determining factor as to whether we enter paradise or not! Every believer wants their
imaan safeguarded, but not all of us are succeeding!

Story of Hazrat Ahmad Bin Hanbal(rahimahullah) at his death bed ... shayatan decalring
defeat ..

There are Four Types of Imaan:

1. Leaf
2. Grass
3. Tree
4. Mountain
All of our imaan in one of these categories.

1. Leaf

Allah Azzawajal say that there is no leaf falls from the tree but Allah knows it.

Characteristics
When the leaf falls on the ground, it is susceptible to the blows of the wind. When the wind
blows, it will go to one direction, when the wind blows from another side, it will go to the
other side. And as long as the wind keeps blowing it will keep moving and keep on float until
it stops.
The Imaan is like this that you will do whatever that is against Allah and the Prophets
command, you will do whatever your parents will say that is against the Allah and prophets
command, you will do whatever your wife will say that is against the Allah and prophets
command, you are doing whatever you want to do, whatever your nafs (ego) want to do.
The nafs is storm, an intoxication that when it blows it will throw you wherever it wants.

Example of their effect

This the example of those people who have imaan but the wind or the gales of passionate
desires will move them and take them and dictate where they go what they do. They have
imaan but its weak, when the wind comes and it says look at this woman, or do this
unlawful thing then they go that way. Their imaan will go that way.

Similar some people they are driven thrown away in the traditions and culture of the
society, we want to do mehndi like this, on the wedding have it like that, then the imaan is
going that way. Wherever there will be pressure from society for example the beard isn’t
good, then he isn’t listening to Allah Azzawajal and His Prophet but rather they'll follow the
crowd. They feel they should follow the time and people. This is the sign of those people
that have imaan like a leaf. He is Muslim, not a kafir, but where the wind wants to take him,
the wind of shaytaan, he will take him. When financial difficulties arises, the wind of
pressure will take him towards wrong means.

22
Danger of such Imaan
The danger of this is that maybe one day the wind or the devilish storm or society comes
and takes you outside of the land into the kufar. Shaytan will say come here and you will go
but also you will listen to a pious person who will say come here and you will go there.
However the danger is that one day it will take you to the sea of kufar. So many people have
left their imaan this way. We can't even stand the pressure of sleep, and we can't even wake
up for fajr, so we follow the wind of sleep. You yourself understand what type of imaan you
have.

Hadith Qudsi – Allah Azzawajal says that the greatest evil which has been worshipped under
the shade of the heaven, there is no more false god than the nafs and the desires.

2. Grass
Characteristics
The root of the grass is in the earth and it stands straight, but when the wind storm comes,
whichever direction the wind blows, the grass moves in that direction, the grass can't stand
straight, it bends to the wind. These people have a stronger imaan than the leaf; they have
imaan but they are so pressurised and fearful of their desires and people. They agree with
the people outwardly, with the shaytaan and agree that we should walk with the time, but
in their hearts they know it's wrong.

Example of their effect

There is something you want to do for example, you want to follow the Sunnah but your
wife doesn’t want you to and you feel pressurised, or your family has a social boycott with
you. So he given in, he listens to them to please them, so outwardly he follows them but at
least the root is still in the ground, his imaan tell him inwardly that its wring!

Danger of such Imaan

Again this type of is hugely influencd by the wind, but at least it can withstand the blows as
it is rooted to the ground. But it can easily be plucked, trod upon and damaged when the
pressure of society and calamity befalls them. Its can dry and burn up in the heat of the test
of Allah Azzawajal!

However one significant point about these people is that if these people are invited for
dawah and given knowledge and sincere advice, they will turn that way, because their root
is in the ground. These type of people benefit from dawah, naseehah, counceling, sincere
advice, invitation and reminder. Outwardly they maybe sinning but if they are provided
another wind, wind of piousness; piety, righteousness and taqwa then they will turn that
way. Therefore you shouldn’t stop doing dawah nor think bad of these kind of people
because maybe outwardly due to pressure he is bent or comprising but inwardly he is true
believer and loves Allah and his messenger (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Somebody one day
gave us advice/dawah that is why we are here.

Second thing is that these people benefit more from pious and righteous gathering. Because
they have goodness inside them but because of influence of society, others people, financial
pressure, social problems, family problems, marital problems they are under pressure and
are diverged towards the evil way but if they are given the pious and righteous gathering
they flourish again. It will start glittering and shining.

23
3. Tree
Characteristics
very strong, grass was its initial stage, then it might grow into a plant and then into a tree,
but the ones whose imaan has grown they have imaan like a tree, with strong foundation in
the ground, the winds are blowing but it's not affected by it unlike the previous two. This is
the imaan of the strong ones, the winds of sin blow, the winds of desires and passion they
blow but they remain standing, the trunk doesn't move trunk, it remains stand and still even
though the leaves and branches moving. These type of people, saalih people, they are
standing.

Example of their effect

But one thing that happens with these type of people is that, just like the tree they take
influence from weather, from change in season, in autumn and winter it dries, in summer it
stands again. Similar this type of person has a strong imaan but he is influenced by the
seasons as well, the seasons of states and condition Allah Azzawajal puts them through.
For example, Allah Azzawajal may have bestowed him wealth and luxury. This is like a state.
Then Allah Azzawajal test the individual, just like in autumn and winter season, leaves falling
and tree looking bare, similarly his wealth and luxuries start diminishing and wither away
and he ends up being impoverished! Though the person integral parts of imaan is ever
present but the beauty if his imaan is affected and ruined. He will display some weakness.

Sometimes people are spiritually moved and affected. When his worldly life is going
accordingly how he wants it, he enjoys his prayers, enjoys all forms of worship, shows
gratitude to Allah Azzawajal. But the moment Allah Azzawajal takes that enjoyment away
from his worship, he starts to become lazy and says that the his heart doesn't feel
connected. There is no enjoyment in dhikr! These people indeed have a strong imaan but
unfortunately they are affected by states.

Danger of such Imaan

The one danger with this level of Imaan is that is a great calamity comes in the form of a
hurricane or tornado, the tree can get uprooted. The person who is worshipping Allah
Azzawajal for states, for worldly benefit, for office, fame and name, for glory, worshipping
Allah Azzawajal for other than Allah's sake, his imaan is in great danger! He can lose his
imaan as its one of the lowest form of shirk!
These people will worship Allah Azzawajal very passionately when they have a big bank
balance but as soon as poverty strikes them they will leave Allah and His Messenger
(Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).

When calamity befalls them the first thing that happens is that they become lazy in their
prayers. They forget to focus on Allah Azzawajal and focus on their calamity instead. So
although they are stronger in imaan then the first two, they can still get uprooted, they get
influenced by change in conditions and states. The common thing they will say, "Oh I'm
feeling very down these days!" THIS IS A STATE! FEELING DOWN WILL NOT PUT YOU DOWN
BUT ITS YOUR OWNSELF THAT WILL PUT YOU DOWN.

Feeling is also a state from Allah Azzawajal to test you, sometimes you will feel very
passionate and wish to perform a lot of ibaadah, and sometimes you will feel like not doing
anything at all.

24
4. Mountain
Characteristics
The biggest type and highest level of imaan is like that of a mountain. If you look at the
mountain, one of its quality is that is designed to remain in its place. Alternation of seasons,
summer, winter, or even earthquakes doesn't affect the mountain, its remains in its place.
These types of people don't worship Allah, nor obedient to Allah Azzawajal on the basis of
any greed or business transaction, for example, 'Oh Allah I will worship you if you give me
such and such!' and if Allah doesn't grant them what they want they leave!

Example of their effect

Sometimes when we don't get what we want, or things go against the way yo wanted it, we
start crying and scream 'WHY ME!' WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME, WHAT WRONG HAVE I
DONE FOR THIS TO HAPPENT O ME?
When a person utters such things then it is a sign that the person is doing a business
transaction with Allah Azzawajal but the people whose imaan are like the mountain,
whatever falls upon them they are not moved, be it rain, snow, wind or blistering heat!
Rather the mountain gets further refined, purified, beatified by it! Thus with the test Allah
Azzawajal puts them through these people imaan gets further purified, strengthened and
beautified! They become even more god-conscious. This is how the imaan of Syyiduna
Bilaal (Radhiallahuanhu) was, even though he was suffering, being tortured, stone placed on
his chest in the scorching midday desert sun, yet still he wouldn't relent from doing the
dhikr of Allah Azzawajal!

This is type of imaan we should aim for

The companions of the prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wasallam) Imaan was like the mountain.
Their imaan stood the test of their time. These people placed their trust in Alllah Azzawajal,
not on themselves, not on their imaan! They would obey Allah, worship Allah ta'ala no
matter if their wives were happy with them or not, their society is happy with them or not;
whether their hearts taking enjoyment or not, whether their mind was happy or not. They
damned everything and put their absolute trust in Allah Azzawajal and said, "Oh Allah we
are yours and we will stay yours!"
These are the real people with real imaan!

25
Where are you in relation to Tazkiyah?

Those who have embarked upon the path to purification may well be thinking I am doing
good, I am on the path and remain satisfied with that. They end up becoming complacent
and don't realise that they still have to travel beyond the third stage of purification to be
considered a true muslim!

Definition of Muslim, Mu'min and Muhsin

Definition of a mulsim and mu'min are given by the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) in
the following hadith:
Narrated by Syyiduna Abu Hurayrah (Radhiallahuanhu), the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam) said:
"the Muslim is someone from whose tongue and hands otehr muslims are safe from; and a
the Mu'min is someone whom people trust with regard to their blood and their properties"

A Muhsin is that you should worship Allah as though you see Him, for though
though you cannot
see Him yet He sees you

In another narration of Abu Hurairah states that ihsan is to:

“Fear Allah as if you see Him...”

Narration from hazrat Anas ibn Maalik

“work for Allah as though you are seeing Him..”

And another:
“Life your life as though you are seeing Him...”

Games Of Nafs: The Nature, Types and Traits of the Nafs

“Keep your friends close but your enemies even closer.” This is very true but if one was asked, “Who
is your greatest enemy?” people will automatically say Shaytaan. Shaytaan is our open enemy.
“Open enemy” means he has declared war on us. If he came face-to-face with us he would want to
destroy us.
The surprising truth is that Shaytaan is not the greatest enemy. Rather, the biggest enemy is the one
who misguided the Shaytaan when there was no other Shaytaan to misguide him. So who
misguided Shaytaan? It was his nafs (evil-self/ego). But the most worrying truth is that, that very
same nafs can be in us as well, such a powerful enemy that it took Shaytaan from the heavens to
the most cursed creature in existence. This topic is all about that very nafs that misguided Shaytaan,
the same nafs that is inside me and you, its nature, deceptions and methodologies of purification.

1. Nafs does not have mind –

And it does not have intellect. To understand this one point, you need to know what the
human being is made of. They are the spirit, body, heart and the nafs.

2. Nafs is not you; you are the spirit.

You are the spirit and your spirit can use the intellect or mind. This intellect is the faculty
with which you can decide, plan for future, plan you time, your life. This intellect
distinguishes between right and wrong. You also have the body to use. You can use this
body but remember you are the spirit and you use the body as you wish. Like when a
person dies, we say, ‘The body of such-and-such’ as the person’s spirit has left. Heart is
something else, which will be mentioned later.

3. The biggest deception of the nafs is that it makes you think you are it and it is you.
Nafs is very tricky and clever in this sense, because it knows you very well. Nafs does not
know anyone else, it knows only you. It knows you so well sometime more than you
know yourself. And all it wants to do is to enjoy. All it is concerned about is the
enjoyment and it use you (the spirit to enjoy). Greatest deception is for it to make you
believe that it does not exist by making you think you (the spirit and nafs) are one and
the same being. This is same has deception used by Shaytaan. His greatest deception is
to make mankind think that he does not exist. People who believe this is no devil, he has
great influence over them.

4. If you given into the nafs just once, it does not mean you lost the war, you only lost
one battle. You might have fought it 99% of the day. Do you think Allah is going to look
at 1% bad thing you did or the 99% of good you’ve done? Do not beat yourself up for
losing the battle once. Yes, you should do taubah and seek forgiveness from that sin. But
you only gave into the nafs once. You can repent and make up for that.

5. If you give in to (manifest) the evil desire of the nafs, only then you become sinful, not
before.
Just desires being present does not make a person sinful. You have to recognise that, “I
do not have these desires they are from my nafs.” Then one can eradicate them with
proper guidance and striving.

28
You only become sinful once you embrace that in an evil action towards that person.
This is when nafs has convinced you and deceived you.

6. It , the nafs, is a spiritual being; it is not a physical being. You cannot open the body and
say, “It is there or there it is in every part of your body, it uses your body (e.g. 7 organs),
mind and heart it is all over you.

7. The nafs only wants to enjoy and manifest the evil desire with the body, mind or heart
but you are not liable/sinful merely for its desire.
If one has, for example, jealousy and sees someone with nice car, family, business or a
position of authority. It is Nafs that has the problem and this jealous disease, not you
(not you as a spirit, that is the real you). You should be happy and grateful thinking, “I do
not have this jealousy for this brother or sister, it is my nafs.” But yu need to do
something about it (see later).

8. One should and can admonish their own nafs as a way of admonishing themselves and
reminding themselves of its existence and deception and its evil desires.

9. Nafs does not think ahead.

This comes from its lack of intellect. That intellect belongs to you, the spirit, not to the
nafs.

10. It only wants enjoyment now, it lives for the moment.

Today it is not bothered about tomorrow, day of judgement. It does not bother about
Paradise or Hell, it wants the enjoyment now whatever that enjoyment may be. You
need to ask yourself now is it good thing what Nafs wants or is it bad thing, you decide
whether to give it or not give it.

11. Nafs does not care about the thing it is halal or haram.
It just wants the desire to be fulfilled now. Shaytaan wants you to do only haram so
that it takes you to Hellfire.

12. Nafs changes from bad to good, but it also changes from good to bad.
For example a cloth can both be purified and made filthy again. So this purification of
the nafs requires maintaining.

13. Nafs only becomes purified by striving against it.

This is the only way nafs is purified. There are two ways one can strive. The next two
points are Golden principles. If person does these two things they can easily become
purified.

14. Do what it does not want you to do (as long as this is within Shariah)
Nafs does not want you to wake up for fajr you wake up for fajar namaz, nafs does not
wants to fast you fast, nafs does not wants to smile you smile.

15. Do not do what it wants you to do (as long as this is within Shariah)

29
For example, nafs wants you to look at the non-mahram, to become purified you do not
look at the non-mahram by striving against the nafs is command and desire. Moment
you decide not to give in to the nafs, you have become little more purified.

16. It becomes weaker and weaker until it submits to you. More you fight with body, mind
and heart from giving into its desires the weaker it becomes. It becomes so weak that it
submits to yourself. It will almost do whatever you want it to. Your nafs is in your control
you submit to your teacher.

17. You can only reach this stage when you submit to your Teacher.
Nafs submit to you; You submit to your Teacher; Your Teacher submits to the Holy
Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wasallam), Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wasallam) submits to
Allah (azzawajal) so indirectly your nafs has submitted to Allah (azzawajal).

18. It sleeps but it does not die. So this person does not strive against his nafs is unaware of
its existence. But the person who fights the nafs feels the conflict inside him until it
sleeps. If it sleeps, it can be woken up again. It only dies when you die.

19. Peace War Peace

First peace is a bad peace because the one who does not fight the nafs, he forgets its
there and begins to believe it is himself. As soon as you turn around and say, “I am not
listening to you, I am not going to do that as it is wrong”, now you are in argument and
in fight with the nafs. Than you realise there is someone inside me, so the war with the
nafs begins. The last peace is the good peace as this is when the nafs goes to sleep,
which is a sign of one level of purification.

20. You feel what it feels and it feels what you feel.
This is why people become confused about the very existence of the nafs. This is also
why it is hard to strive against it. But this also gives you the ability to fight it as you go
through hardship.

21. It is harder to fight a feeling than it is to fight a thought.

Mashaikh say, “He who has conquered his nafs, he has concurred Shaytaan.” To
cconquered Nafs you have concur the feelings and thoughts, to conquer Shaytaan you
have conquer thoughts only

22. Strong desire of the nafs is your greatest weakness, which Shaytaan will use against
you.
Shaytaan uses your greatest weakness, therefore you need to know your greatest
weaknesses. These are the very doors Shaytaan uses and will come to you. So you have
to ask yourself. Everyone is different so our weakness is different. So think and ponder
on all your weaknesses and put something in place. Because these weakness are
stopping you from attaining the closeness of Allah (azzawajal).

23. There are various states of the nafs, the first to be purified is the evil kind of nafs,
which inclines towards evil. They fight with you very heavily and are sometime
dominant. This nafs is called “Nafs Ammarah” inclining towards evil nafs , this is the
30
normally before the seeker starts the path towards Allah, so this is the nafs first that
needs changing.

24. You make the decision, nafs cannot force you, it only has the weapons of whispers and
desires, whereas, Shaytaan has only has whisper . This is one main reason why nafs is
more difficult to fight.

25. After the nafs Ammarah it goes through the war, so it becomes weaker and sleeps and
becomes quiet, not inclining towards evil and sin anymore. It becomes nafs
Mutma’innah (peaceful nafs)and tranquil. This is a sign of purification.

26. And finally it becomes inclined towards good and it is always pleased with the Allah
(azzawajal) and is called nafs Raadhia (pleased nafs). It inclined towards good so sign of
this person is that if anything happen in his life he sees the positive side he or she is
always happy with the result.

27. In a Mashwarah (group consultation) someone’s opinion will be opposing you, they
might put you down and make you feel lowly. Your reaction should be, “My opinion is
the lowest opinion, I am lowly, their opinion is right, you still give your opinion.” Even
though your nafs reaction might be something else, you should force thoughts of
humbleness on it. Over time nafs will believe it too. This is an internal striving and will
purify it.

28. If you are silent with your tongue but you mind is saying bad things about the person
and your heart is embracing evil feelings about them, you are still becoming
impurified.

31
Protectors of Imaan and Importance of Sunnah

Robbers of Faith
According to Imaam Abu Hanifa: “three sins pose the danger of robbing one of faith: (1)
failure to give thanks (shukr) for the blessed grace of faith, (2) failure to perform the
obligatory religious duties, and (3) wrongful treatments of the servants (of the lord).”

Similitude of Imaan to Lamp

Faith resembles a lamp (sirāj), and compliance with the commandments and prohibitions (of
the Sacred Law) is comparable to taking good care of hat lamp, by installing in it a
lighthouse. The whispering of the devil, at the time of exposure, is comparable to the
blowing of violent winds if someone kindles the lamp of faith in his heart, but does not take
good care of it, by regular performance of the acts of worship and abstinence from
forbidden things, there is reasons to fear that his lamp may be extinguished by the winds of
satanic whisperings.

Effects of Real Imaan on a Person

It was Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) who said, “Faith is like a tree that has several
branches. One branch extends to the heart, and its fruit is sincere devotion (ikhlas). One
branch extends to the limbs and the organs of the body and its fruits are righteous deeds.
One branch extends to the lower self (nafs), and its fruit is abstinence from carnal desire.”

Sayyiduna Abdul Qaadir Al Jilaani (rahimahullah) analogy of Imaan and the palaces its
surrounded by
Faith is like a treasure hidden in the Palace of Gold = Faraaidh
Palace of Gold surrounded and protected by Palaces of Silver = Waajibaat
Palaces of Silver surrounded and protected by Palaces made of Bronze = Sunnah
Palaces of Bronze is surrounded and protected by palaces of Mud = Mustahabaat
The enemy who wants to steal your treasure will fight his way through until he gets to
palaces of gold. If a person doesn't fight the enemy at the early stage then he may get
overwhelmed and loose all his palaces including his treasure> enemy is non other than
shyataan

Hadith of How Our Deeds are Scanned

Hazrat Mu’az bin Jabal (radiallah hu anhu) said: I heard the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam) say, “Allah created the seven angels before He created the seven heavens; He
created the seven heavens and the earth and placed one angel guard of each heaven.

The two angels ascend to the heavens with the actions of servant each day (morning and
evening). The good deeds are radiant like the light of the sun and the angels revere the
deeds.”

Guardian of the First Heaven

When the good actions of man reaches the first heaven the guardian of the first heaven says
to them: “I am examiner of back-biting. My Lord ordered me not to let the actions of
servant pass if they contain back-biting, throw them back at the face of the servant who
perform them” then the angels take the rest of his good action to the second heaven.

32
Guardian of the Second Heaven
When the goods action of man reaches the second heaven, the guardian of the second
heaven says to them: “My Lord ordered me not to let the actions of servant pass if they
have been done for worldly purposes, throw them back at the face of the servant who
perform them” then the angels take the rest of his good action to the third heaven.

Guardian of the Third Heaven

When the good action of man reaches the third heaven, the guardian of the third heaven
says to them: “I am the guardian angel of pride. My Lord ordered me not to let the actions
of servant pass if they were done with pride , throw them back at the face of the servant
who perform them” then the angels take the rest of his good action to the fourth heaven.

Guardian of the Fourth Heaven

When the good actions of man reaches the fourth heaven, the guardian of the fourth
heaven says to them: “My Lord ordered me not to let the actions of servant pass if they
were done with self praise as I am an angel of self praise, throw them back at the face of the
servant who perform them” then the angels take the rest of his good action to the fifth
heaven.

Guardian of the Fifth Heaven

When the good action of man reaches the fifth heaven, the guardian of the fifth heaven says
to them: “I am an angel of hatred, My Lord ordered me not to let the actions of servant pass
if they have been done with jealousy, throw them back at the face of the servant who
perform them” then the angels take the rest of his good action to the sixth heaven.

Guardian of the Sixth Heaven

When the good action of man reaches the sixth heaven the guardian of the sixth heaven
says to them: “My Lord ordered me not to let the actions of servant pass if they did not
show kindness to His servants when they fell in dangers and calamities. He used to laugh
and take enjoyment of the calamities and loss of others. I am an angel of kindness, throw
them back at the face of the servant who perform them” then the angels take the rest of his
good action to the seventh heaven.

Guardian Of the Seventh Heaven

When the good actions of the man reaches the seventh heaven the guardian of the seventh
heaven says to them: “My Lord ordered me not to let the actions of servant pass if they
were not done to please Him or for His sake, but they were done for name and fame or for
show, throw them back at the face of the servant who perform them” then the angels take
the rest of his good action to Allah (Subhaanahuwata’ala) for His Judgement.

Judgement made by Allah (Subhaanahuwata’ala)

Allah (Subhaanahuwata’ala) says: “you are representing the actions of my servants and I am
the guard of man's heart. I know these actions were not done to please me. So my curse is
upon him!” and the angels also curse him and the seven heavens also curse him.

Hazrat Mu’az after hearing this became fearful and said “Ya Rasulullah [Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam] you are the Messenger of Allah and I am Mu’az, what shall I do?

The Prophet [Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam] replied, “Follow My Sunnah even if you have short
life.”

33
Four Supporters to Preserve Repentance
The Ode of Imam Muhammad Al-Maghribi (Rahmahullah)

This is for those who people who leave the way of evil, the way of sins, the footsteps of
shaytaan and wnats to embark on a journey behind the Prophet (alaihis salaam) and follow
his footsteps. If you wish to do this you must:

You must wrap yourself in endurance and istiqamah- envelope yourself from head to toe.
Istiqamah means having a strong will and carrying on walking, striving, making effort in
ease and hardship whatever circumstances arises. You should have 'urge and will' that 'I am
going to carry on no matter what! If a person lacks this then they really won't be travel the
journey to the pleasure of Allah Azzawajal.

This should be made clear to an individual as your journey cannot begin or the journey
cannot continue if a person lacks this quality or does not have the resolve and strong will to
fulfil the command of Allah and bare the hardship.

Spark that helps take up tawbah is remorse - the strong feeling of shame and regret of a sin
a person committed, eg if a does a sin alone in his house, parents find out, how shameful
does he feel -

WHEN THIS TYPE OF SHAME AND REGRET COMES TOWARDS ALLAH AZZAWAJAL, THAT
ALLAH IS WATCHING ME HOW COULD I DO THIS - THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF
REPENTANCE!!!

FOUR HELPERS

1. Seeing the defects of acts/seeing the loss: not to look at any good deeds of yours
with admiration but rather seeing the defects in it, its evilness and its loss. Think - I
am doing this amal, what defects, what shortcomings is there in it? This will help go
towards and maintain tawbah!

How to see loss in acts:

Example of a person who is in heat and wants cold water, he sees the water but when he is
told that the water contains poison, his mind will say 'REFRAIN' - if I drink it, it will give me
coolness, my throt, stomach will feel cold, but cold forever as it will kill! Thus he will refrain
from doing the act. When an individual sees the loss in his actions then it helps to refrain.

THEREFORE WHEN THE DESIRES URGES YOU TO DO SIN, TO DO EVIL, JUST LIKE THE
STOMACH CRAVED FOR WATER, THE NAFS (EGO) CRAVES FOR FULFILMENT OF THE EVIL
DESIRES, THE HUNGER FOR SEX, HUNGER FOR WEALTH, WHEN THE PERSON COMES TO
KNOW THAT THE IN THIS WATER OF FULFILMENT LIES THE POISON OF THE WRATH OF
ALLAH, HIS DISPLEASURE, THEN HE WILL LEAVE IT!

When you have certainty of this, you will refrain. Hence why you should see the defects of
the acts, you should calculate the gain and loss of carrying out that sin.

34
Danger is Leave the
Desire
Greater Act

When
hen a person has a mindset that no one is seeing me, it's difficult for him to refrain from
the sin, whereas in reality Allah Azzawajal is Seeing him, Angels are seeing him, all of our
deeds are presented to the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), the peoplepe on day of
judgement will see.

So for those who perform good deeds, look at the defects. Those who have committed a
sin, look at the loss!

• its obvious that its a sin

Sinner • think of the loss

• look at the shortcomings and defects

Good Doer • analyse that self likeness isn't developing

2. Guarding:: protecting ones inner and outer from going against the command of Allah
Azzawajal.
If a person
n used to commit sin, and has repented, be it from adultery, backbite.
However, if they start to taking enjoyment of that sin inwardly then this may well
cause the person to commit the same sin again.

JUST LIKE COMMITTIGN THE ACT IS AN OUTWARD SIN, TAKING

TAKING ENJOYMENT AND
PLEASURE IN THE REMEMBRANCE OF THE SIN IS A INWARD SIN!

Don't retrieve the information of the sin from your mind, taking enjoyment of what
you used to do etc

Shaytaan will want you not to leave the sin, but if you do leave the sin, then
the he will
make you think and remember the sin so that you can take enjoyment from it.

SO DO NOT REFRESH OLD MEMORIES, WE ARE ALL SINFUL, APART FROM PROPHETS
AND MESSENGERS, WHOA RE SINLESSS, WE AR SINFUL, SO DONT SWITCH TEH
REFESH BUTTON IN YOUR MIND WHEN
WHEN YOU ARE ALONE OR WITH SOMEONE ELSE!

3. Self Examination (muhaasabah): hold yourself to account by investigating the acts

and states of yourself.

One must examine its conformity or opposition to Allah's Command day by day,
rather hour by hour. What states
states you are going through, what thoughts are going
through your head, thus helping you to keep yourself in check and control but this

35
also leads to greater awareness of one's self (ego). 'whoever knows himself knows
his lord!'

4. Meditation (muraaqabah): to meditate that Allah Azzawajal observes and examines

Him in all outward movements and stillness and in all inward thoughts and
intentions, from outer to inner, thus resulting in a person constantly repenting. Just
like the individual is cautious in beign disobedient to Allah Azzawajal outwardly, he
feels shame of these evil acts, he should also guard against any blameworthy
thoughts inwardly and should feel shame in such thoughts arises intentionally. Thus
his outer and inner in constant repentance!

These four things will help preserve your tawbah if you observe and implement!

36
The Three Conditions of a Good Friend

Hazrat Anas bin Malik (radhiallahuanhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam) said:
‘Some people open the door to good and close the door to evil, and some people open the
door to evil and close the door to good. Glad tidings to those in whose hands Allah places the
keys to good, and woe to those in whose hands Allah places the keys to evil.’”

Narrated by Hazrat Sahl bin Sad (Radhiallahuanhu) that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:
“This goodness contains many treasures, and for those treasures there are keys. So glad
tidings to the one whom Allah makes a key to good and a lock for evil, and woe to the one
whom Allah makes a key to evil and a lock to good.”

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said in a hadith related by Imam Abu Ya'la from
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (Radhiallahuanhuma) the cousin of the Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam) he said that once the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was asked by a
companion "what is your recommendation with which people we should sit and be in
company?"

The mindset of sahaabah in asking that question is that : whatever answer the Prophet
(Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) will give now, we will dissociate with those people who the
Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) says we shouldn't sit with, and will sit and befriend
those people whom He (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) says we should sit. May Allah bless
these companions that they ask questions on our behalf. But ask yourself, when we receive
an instruction from the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), is our mentality like this or is it
a mentality of ignoring it?
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said to the nearest effect that:
"Whoever has these three qualities sit with them company them befriend them."

The first quality and characteristic the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said that
person or those people should be such that when you just look at them they remind you
of Allah Azzawajal and of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)

NOW PONDER - DO MY FRINDS REMIND OF ALLAH WHEN I SEE THEM?

HAVE I MADE FRIENDS ON THE ADVICE OF THE PROPHET (SALLALLAHU ALAIHI WASALLAM)
OR HAVE I SELECTED MY FRIENDS AND COMPANY ON MY OWN ACCORD OR HAVE I JUST
FOLLOWED THE DICTATIONS OF SHAYTAAN AND NAFS.
YOU KNOW VERY WELL A PERSON IS ON THE DEEN ON THE LIFESTYLE OF HIS FRIENDS AND
THE COMPANY HE KEEPS.

What to do?
Look at the list of your friends, with who or whom do you spend the weekend?
That friend could TV, Internet, Mobile Phone! But are they the ones that you look at them
and they remind you of Allah or do they remind of women or sin or film. That it is with
these people we enjoy such a good time.

RASULULLAH (SALLALLAHU ALAIHI WASALLAM) IS ADVISING US TO SIT IN THE COMPANY OF

GOOD AND PIOUS, UNLESS YOU LEAVE THE BAD COMPANY, THE GOOD COMPANY DOES
NOT BENEFIT YOU
37
It is just like a person is taking medicine for an illness and if he doesn’t leave what the
doctor has said for him to leave, the positive medicine is not going to help him. For
example, a person has diabetes, the doctor says do not consume sugar or sugary foods. If
the person still cinsumes the sugary food, and at the same time takes his medication, what
benefit is the medicine having upon him? Hence, unless a person leaves the bad company
which is bad for you then there will be no benefit from sitting with good and righteous
people.

Second quality Prophet said is when he talks your knowledge about Allah increases or
your knowledge increases. He gave the second sign because any person can cloak and wear
the garment of piety and make themselves look very pious and righteous, dressed in the
sunnah, but whenever you sit with him does your knowledge increase. Or is that it is just a
trivial and useless talk?

Apply the teaching of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) regarding friends tomorrow.
If he or she isn't matching what the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has said, you need
to leave, you need to change! People love exchanging things if it doesn't suite them. People
will change if its giving difficulty for worldly benefit, but we seem to not worry about the
greater difficulty our friends are causing, the difficulty in trying to attain the pleasure of
Allah Azzawajal. The bad company and a bad friend is very dangerous they will take you
away from Allah His Messenger (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), take you away from Jannah and
he will take you closer to shaytan and closer to evil and closer to hell. So if you can change
your clothes, shoes, phones, people even change their wife/husband if the wife is no good,
why can't you change your friends.
The second sign is asking the question that whenever they talk, you may be sitting two
three hours but has your knowledge increased about Allah or any beneficial matter in the
dunya? If it doesn't then change your friends.

Third thing Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said even if these two things are present
and third is not present then do not sit in his company. He said that his actions remind you
of the hereafter

When you see his practice and his practical life it should remind you of the hereafter.
Thus, his outlook reminds you of Allah and His Messenger (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), his
conversation increases you in knowledge, in light and his practice reminds you of Hereafter.
Therefore this is a friend that when the time of salaah has come and your friend says to you
that no matter what we are doing, we have to go. This is a friend that you are sitting
together watching the tv and something bad appears, he says we should submit to Allahs
command and change the channel or turn the tv off. That the way he eats he does not eat
like a disbeliever, nor like animal but like Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), herecites
Bismillah eats halal eats with his right hand his actions reminds you of the hereafter or has
some relationship with the hereafter.

This is the standard a person who acts upon the advice of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam) he will see his life improving.
Peoples conditions and states are not changing due to the underlying reason that that they
don’t change their company .
The friends of dunya are those whose conversation reminds you of dunya or their actions
also reminds you of dunya .
38
Five Layers of Protection Against Heedlessness

According to the masters in the science of purification, if you wish to stay away from
heedlessness (ghaflah) you will need to erect and build five walls then you won't be in
ghaflah. If you destroy anyone of these walls then you will fall into heedlessness.

Walls of Protection Against Ghaflah

1. You should endeavour and work for livelihood
But whatever result you get, don't seek more than that, be happy and content with
that. Because if you are not satisfied with whatever you have earned lawfully then
you will go towards earning more unlawfully, in haraam way or you will place deen
as second priority, not first. Your prayer will become second priority, sunnah second
priority etc.
We create targets that we wish to earn such and such amount by such and such
time, we start becoming like a mad dog trying to earn our millions, but in the way to
achieving it, we bite out relatives or biting the deen of Allah Azzawajal. Either way,
we seem to not to care as we just want to arrive at our destination.
Thus do effort to work, open a business, then after that whatever you get lawfully,
less or more, BE CONTENT > DONT SEEK MORE BY HARAAM MEANS

DON'T TRY TO BECOME AN OVERNIGHT MILLIONAIRE BY SELLING DRUGS, AN OVER

MONTH MILLIONAIRE BY SELLING ALCOHOL OR OVER YEAR MILLIONAIRE BY
DEALING IN INTREST!!! OTHERWISE YOU WILL DESTROY YOURSELF IN THIS LIFE AND
YOUR ETERNAL ABODE IN HEREAFTER!

2. Death is waiting like a guest in the guest room

Whenever you have a guest arrive in to your house, it maybe that your are
preoccupied with another matter, so you ask them to take seat and will be with
them shortly. When you then carry out the task, you are always conscientious of the
fact that your guest is waiting, it's always at the back of your mind. This is the
mindset you should with regards to death, think that death has already come, the
instruction has already been given for you to be taken. Hazrat Izaraeel (Alaihis
Salaam) visits every person everyday; it's a matter of time which day will yours and
mine.

3. Be alert and keep in mind that there are certain rights of Allah Azzawajal upon me;
that except me, no one else can fulfil it!
Once you know that it is ONLY YOU WHO CAN DO SOMETHING, THEN YOU GET UP
AND DO IT! No Prophet, no wali, no angel can fulfil the right of Allah which is on you
for example, Believing in Allah, it His right upon you to believe, no one can believe
instead of you, you cant say to someone, brother you believe on my behalf, and I'll
take the benefit of it. How foolish does it sound that you say to someone, you go
offer zuhr for me instead of myself. If it was possible to do that then people would
be fighting with one another ordering each you do this for me etc.
Thus everyone knows that there are certain things you and only you can fulfil it!
Just like a man of the household knows it's his responsibility to provide for the
family, and only he can do that. He doesn't expect the neighbour to give money to
his children, nor expects them to pay for his bills and food etc. The person knows it's

39
my responsibility and he must fulfil it either through work or borrowing or even
begging.

4. Being mindful that Allah Azzawajal with me and watching every deed of mine
Whatever activity you do, always try to bring these to your mind, for example, if you
are walking on the street, going to the market, remind yourself that Allah is watching
me, therefore I must not look at anything He has commanded me not to look at.
Allah is with me so I am never alone thinking no can see me and hide my actions
from Him

5. Know that with every breath your life is diminishing

Your breath never stops, even when you eat you still breathing, but the strange thing
is your life is also lessening. You are going away from the dunya , even when you are
sleeping you are breathing, your worldly life is lessening. You may be enjoying,
playing, eating, socialising but in reality is with all of this your life is getting less and
less; WITH EVERY BREATH YOUR LIFE IS STRIPPING AWAY BEFORE YOUR VERY OWN
EYES!

THESE FIVE THINGS SHOULD BE SO ENTRENCHED AND EMBEDDED IN YOU RMIND

AND HEART THAY THEY STAY LIKE WALLS, I FYOU DO THIS YOU WILL, YOU WILL NOT
FALL IN HEEDLESSNESS (GAFLAH)! THE PERSON WILL OT FALL INTO FORGETFULNESS!

If one of the walls breaks then you are not protected and maybe in danger of falling
into ghaflah. So build these walls, strengthen them around you; fortify yourself in it
so that you never fall in ghaflah. Now the question is how can you do this, how can
you build it > course of purification! This course isn't just for passing time like a
hobby, but it is for your greatest need which will be in the grave, in aakhira and on
the bridge of siraat!

Prophetic Path

What is Prophetic-Path?

Prophetic-Path is a not-for-profit organisation conveying the sacred message of Islam and

blessed teachings of the last and Final Messenger, Prophet Muhammad, Peace and Blessings
be Upon Him, according to the tenets of Ahl-Sunnah wal Jama’ah, to Muslims and Non-
Muslims throughout the world in a modern and unique way.

What are the aims of Prophetic-Path?

Here at Prophetic-Path, we recognise that in today’s modern world, there is no deficiency in

the availability of Islamic knowledge and information. In spite of this, we acknowledge and
see that there is little or no positive change to the inner and outer states of the individual
and wider community. Instead we observe that the opposite is occurring with ignorance,
