Introduction
Chromatography (came from the Greek word Chroma and Graphe) can be simply
be defined as color writing. Paper chromatography uses ordinary filter paper
where the mixture to be separated is applied (i.e. the ink of the color pens). The
compounds can interact in two phases which are the mobile and stationary
phase. This technique helps in analysing, identifying, purifying and quantifying
unknown separable mixtures. The mobile phase is either a liquid or gas which
moves the solvent through the stationary phase during the process. The
stationary phase is a liquid or solid component that is fixed in a place for the
procedure.

Chromatography is first found in Russia in 1906 by an Italian-born botanist

named MikhaelTsvet(1872–1919), who used the technique for studying plant
pigments such as chlorophyll. It is used for a large range of applications. It’s
mainly used to separate complex mixtures. With this technique, you can separate
compounds based on their size, molecular weight, ionic mobility, polarity, boiling
point etc. This allows us to measure the concentration of a specific compound in a
mixture. Because of this, it is a widely used technique. One of the
chromatography's big advantages is that it works with tiny samples and low
concentrations (particularly helpful when it comes to such things as forensic
science and drug or pollution testing).

This report will describe the experiment conducted using paper chromatography
to separate the mixture of the 3 colored pens and see what colours will surface.
This will be done by drawing a line an inch above the bottom of the paper
chromatography and let the water run through the ends of the paper
chromatography until it reaches the colors and separate. This experiment will
also help identify what other colours lies under the given colors.

Materials
 Filter Paper
 Chromatography
 Color Pens
Methods
The laboratory procedures require different steps in order to have the outcome
that they want to have. This procedure is divided into the following:
 Stationary Phase Preparation:
- The markings are made on the paper for the 3 different colors for
identification and creation of baseline.
 Mobile Phase Preparation:
- This phase is done by pouring 100ml of water into the beaker
 Chromatograph Development:
- As the colors starts to separate when dipped in the 100ml water. The colors
start to separate forming other colors in the process.

Data and Results

Trial No.1
Color Results
RED PINK
GREEN NONE
BLUE NONE
Our first attempt almost showed no results. Only the mixture of the color red
separated which showed the color pink
Trial No. 2
Color Results
RED ORANGE,PINK
GREEN YELLOW
BLUE NONE
The second attempt showed results though the last color didn’t show any kind of
separation of its mixture.
Trial No. 3
Color Results
ORANGE YELLOW,RED
PINK YELLOW
LIGHT BLUE NONE
In our 3rd attempt to success in our experiment, we used different colors. The
results are still the same as the 2nd trial where the first two colors mixture
separated while the mixture of the last one didn’t separate.

Analysis and Discussion

The expected outcome of this experiment is that the mixture of the 3 different
inks of the colored pens will separate and show the other
underlying colors behind it. The purpose of this research is to see what colors will
show if the mixture of the ink of a certain color is put in a filter paper and dipped
into the water.
The collected data showed that the result of the experiment or the separation of
the mixtures of the 3 different inks of the colored. The results that we were
aiming to get hasn’t shown but it is not unsuccessful at all since we managed to
make the two of the color of the ink showed the separation of their mixtures.
The first attempt was almost unsuccessful, as the first color showed separation of
its mixtures. The second attempt was a bit successful because 2 of the 3 colors
showed results with the last one having no signs of separation of its mixtures at
all. Our third and last attempt is almost the same as the second attempt but with
a different set of colors, 2 of the 3 colors also reacted with the last one showing no
signs at all till the end.
To make it short, the colors formed through the separation of the mixtures of the
ink colored pens is not that many as it only showed 1 or 2 colors. We think that
not all results are accurate, it is still possible for an experiment to have an error in
the process due to some circumstances.
