Introduction to Microsoft Windows 98


What is operating system (OS)?
An operating system is basically software that makes everything in the computer
work together smoothly and efficiently. Basically, it controls the “overall” activity of
a computer. Operating systems have three basic jobs they must do:
a. Control Hardware: The operating system controls all the parts of the
computer and attempts to get everything work together
b. Run Applications: Another job the OS does is run application
software. This would include Microsoft Office, Win Zip, games, etc.
C. Manage Data and files: The OS makes it easy for you to organize
your computer. Thought the OS you are able to do a number of things to data
including copy, move, delete, and rename it. This makes it much easier to find and
organize what you have.
There are a vast number of OS’s more common are:
1. Windows 95/98: This is what you will find on most new PC’s today. It
is a very popular OS, and there are many applications that run on it. It has an easy-
to-use Graphical User Interface (GUI)
2. Windows NT: Windows NT is another Microsoft operating system that is
beginning to really catch on because of its networking capabilities. Microsoft is
trying to slowly phase out Windows 95/98 and replace it with some form of NT.

Released in June of 1998. Integrated web browsing gives your desktop a browse-
like interface. You will ‘browse’ everything, including stuff on your local computer.
Active Desktop allows you to setup your desktop to be your personal web page,
complete with links any web content. You can also place active desktop items, such
as a stock ticker, that will update automatically. Internet Explorer 4.0 New browser

Introduction of Windows 98
Windows 98 has become a widely accepted operating system for PCs. With an
improved graphical user interface (GUI) and support from all major software
development companies, a window 98 is destined for great success.
Rather than requiring the computer user to memorize arcane commands, a window
98 allows everyone, novices and experts, alike, to get to quickly get to work. And
that’s the name of the game with computers, get to work, be productive. And the

Using Windows 98
Windows 98 is a Graphical User Interface (GUI-pronounced Gooey) operating
system. The operating system is always running when you’re your computer is on.
Depending on the way your computer is set up you may have to types user name and
password to log on.
Windows 98 Desktop
After windows 98 loads, the working environment, called the Desktop, displays
on the screen. The windows 98 desktop is designed to look and feel like a work area
in an office or at home. The windows 98 desktop can be thought of as an electronic
version of the top of the you desk.
The desktop usually different from one computer to another. This is because some
items get added as new programs are installed on a computer, and other items get
delete at will. You will learn how to change the way your desktop looks.

Main components of the Desktop

Icons: Icons are placed on the desktop to provide easy access to programs and
files icons provide a quick way to start a program.
My Computer
My Computer: the my computer icon can be used to view the storage
devices available to you computer. My computer is program utility used to explore
the content of your computer.
Recycle Bin: the recycle bin is where you discard unneeded objects. When
you delete some thing on your computer (folders or files), they go to an area called
the Recycle bin where you still have a chance of recalling (retrieving) them. This is
one of the containers you will be using to store or locate your work.
Start Button: the start button provides an entry point to being using
programs installed on the computer’s hard drive.
Task Bar: the task bar is the long gray bar at the bottom of the screen or desk
top on its left start button and on the right side system tray is called task bar.
System Tray: on the desktop where you can see the current time its called
system tray.
My Computer
To open My Computer windows, point to the My Computer icon on the
desktop and double-click by quickly pressing and releasing the left mouse button
twice without moving the mouse.
