valuable new association, making the
irrelevant relevant.”
-- Prof. Sidney Parnes

Creative thinking is the generation

of creative ideas
(or ideation).

Understanding the Power of Perception

“Perceptive Thinking”
deals, generally,
with changing perceptions
so that creative analysis can be
undertaken to study or assess the
situation, problem or an existing
invention.
Understanding the Power of Perception

Perceptive thinking – being aware and

conscious, alert and observant, intuitive
and insightful, open and uninhibited,
discerning and penetrative, sensitive
and receptive, keen and sharp, incisive
and wise.
John & Marsha were playing in the water when they were attacked by
an intruder. The two appeared to have struggled fiercely against
the attacker that seem to have come from nowhere. Their bodies
were horribly cut & lacerated & Marsha’s head was almost
detached from her body.
The residents below the apartment noticed the unusual dripping of
water coming from the upper room that prompted them to call the
police.
When the police came & barged into the room, they saw the two
bodies gruesomely mutilated and trails of blood can be been seen
from the room to the kitchen window.
The police noticed that the window pane was open but no valuable
items were taken out from the master’s bedroom.

Plus, Minus, Interesting (PMI)

PMI helps the students to:

• See both sides of an argument
• View things from a different point of
view
• Think broadly about an issue
• Suspend judgment
• Work as individuals, in pairs or as a
member of a group
PMI - How can I do it?

Plus Minus Interesting

(+) (-) (i)
Consider All Factors (CAF)

• Useful in choosing, deciding or planning

• List down all the factors and pick out the
ones that matters most
• Be sure that all factors have been
considered before making a decision
• Concentrate on the not obvious ones
First Important Priorities (FIP)

• Gather as many ideas as possible first and

then to start picking out priorities.
• Different people may have different priorities
in the same situation.
• Each person should be able to explain why
they have chosen something as a priority. The
ideas not chosen as priorities should not be
ignored. They also need to be considered—
but after the first priorities.
Inventive Thinking

• Must draw upon previous knowledge,

skills and experience
• Recognize areas where new learnings
must be acquired in order to understand
or address the problem
• Apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluate
using creative and perceptive thinking
and problem solving
