1998 AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS

BMW

5 Series

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

WARNING: To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and
carefully follow all WARNINGS and SERVICE PRECAUTIONS.

The main components of Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)

include a driver-side air bag module (located in center of steering
wheel), passenger side air bag module (located inside instrument
panel, above glove box), side air bag modules (located in both front
doors and optionally in both rear doors also), head protection system
(located around top of front door opening), electronic SRS control
unit, contact ring, energy capacitor/voltage transformer (integrated
into SRS control unit), SRS warning light, driver-side knee bolster
mounted under steering column, seat belt contacts, and Emergency
Tensioning Retractor (ETR) seat belt assemblies. For SRS to operate
properly, 3-point seat belts must be worn.
When SRS control unit senses an impact, it transmits a
voltage signal to gas generator pellets in air bag modules and the ETR
seat belt assemblies. The voltage signal ignites gas generator pellets
to produce a quantity of non-toxic nitrogen gas.
In the air bag modules, the nitrogen gas passes through a
tiny filter to fill and deploy the air bags in about 30 milliseconds.
After the air bags inflate to maximum expansion, the nitrogen gas is
released away from driver through 2 ventilation holes in rear of air
bag. The air bag inflation and collapse sequence takes about 30-35
milliseconds.
In the Emergency Tensioning Retractor (ETR) seat belt
assembly, the ignited nitrogen gas forces a piston to be driven
downward in a tube attached to seat belt assembly. Piston has a cable
attached to it. Cable pulls on seat belt reel, increasing seat belt
tension and holding front seat occupant(s) tightly against seat
backrest.

SRS ACTIVATION

SRS is activated when SRS control unit detects a frontal

impact exceeding programmed threshold. The SRS control unit checks the
status of various sensors and deploy different parts of the SRS system
as needed. Both front seat belt latches are equipped with micro-
switches wired to the SRS control unit. Driver-side air bag will not
be deployed by the SRS control unit if driver seat belt is buckled and
impact severity is light. If belt is not buckled or impact is more
severe, driver-side air bag will deploy.
Passenger-side air bag will not be deployed if seat belt is
buckled and impact severity is light. If belt is not buckled, or in a

more severe frontal impact, passenger-side air bag will deploy. Seat
belt contact micro-switches are also used to control emergency
tensioning retractors. SRS control unit will only deploy belt
tensioning retractors on belts that are buckled. In the event a
frontal impact occurs while SRS control unit detects faults in any
sensors, control unit will deploy all air bags and emergency
tensioning retractors in seat belts.

CONTACT RING

Contact ring (mounted on steering column, under steering

wheel) is a continuous loop of wire ribbon that forms an electrical
circuit between the steering wheel and steering column. This wire
ribbon winds and unwinds to ensure electrical contact when the
steering wheel is turned. A replacement contact ring may come with a
lock screw to keep the contact ring centered until it is installed.
For centering procedure, see CONTACT RING under ADJUSTMENTS.

DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE

Driver-side air bag module consists of an inflatable air bag,

gas generator and ignitor. The gas generator and ignitor make up the
inflator unit, which is mounted permanently on rear of air bag module.
A 2-wire connector with gold-plated terminals is mounted
inside inflator unit, at rear of air bag module. When 2-wire connector
is disconnected, a safety shorting spring inside inflator connector
spreads open, touching both terminals. This prevents air bag module
from inflating if voltage is accidentally applied across terminals.

is disconnected, a safety shorting spring inside inflator connector
spreads open, touching both terminals. This prevents air bag module
from inflating if voltage is accidentally applied across terminals.

PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE

Passenger-side air bag module is installed inside instrument

panel, above glove box. It is accessible by removing tray or panel on
top of passenger side instrument panel. Air bag module consists of
large inflatable air bag, 2 gas generators, and 2 igniters. Air bag
fully inflates in about 35 milliseconds. Gas is then released through
a filtered vent on the windshield side of the air bag, causing it to
deflate.

SIDE AIR BAG MODULE

Side air bag modules are installed behind door trim panel on
both front doors. They are accessible by removing door trim panel of
appropriate door. Side air bag module consists of an inflatable air
bag, gas generator, and igniter. Air bag fully inflates in about 35
milliseconds. Gas is then released through a filtered vent on the back
side of the air bag, causing it to deflate.

SIDE IMPACT HEAD PROTECTION SYSTEM (HPS)

Side impact Head Protection System (HPS) consists of air bag

modules which are installed along both front pillars and over front
doors. They add additional protection for the driver and passenger in
the event of a severs side impact. Module consists of an inflatable
tube-shaped air bag, gas generator, and igniter. Air bag fully
inflates in about 35 milliseconds. Gas is then released through a
filtered vent causing it to deflate.

EMERGENCY TENSIONING RETRACTOR (ETR) IN SEAT BELT

Emergency Tensioning Retractor (ETR) in seat belt assembly

contains a gas generator pellet. When air bags deploy, SRS control
unit ignites gas generator pellet and forces a piston downward in tube
attached to seat belt assembly. Piston has a cable attached to it.
Cable pulls on seat belt reel, taking up seat belt slack. This
increases seat belt effectiveness. Not all vehicles are equipped with
this system.

ENERGY CAPACITOR

If normal power source (battery voltage) is interrupted

during a collision, energy capacitor inside SRS control unit supplies
SRS power. If energy capacitor fails, a code sets.

SEAT BELT CONTACTS

Seat belt contact sensors are used to signal SRS control

unit. Both front seat belt latch assemblies are equipped with micro-
switches. SRS control unit utilizes switched ground input signal to
determine seat belt status. Not all vehicles are equipped with this
system.

SEAT OCCUPANCY MODULE (SBE) (ANALOG TO DIGITAL CONVERTER)

Output signals from the passenger-side seat occupancy sensor

pad are converted from a varying analog signal to a digital pulse
signal by the SBE. This signal is then sent to the SRS control unit to
assist it in making deployment decisions. SBE module is located under
passenger seat. Not all vehicles are equipped with this system.

SEAT OCCUPANCY SENSOR PAD

Front passenger seat cushion is equipped with a foil contact

sensor. If front passenger seat is occupied, seat occupancy detector
will send a varying analog signal to the SBE. This signal varies in
direct proportion to the weight or movement of seat occupant. Not all
vehicles are equipped with this system.

SRS CONTROL UNIT (SRS DIAGNOSTIC UNIT)

The SRS control unit is located under center console, behind

ventilation grill. SRS control unit contains an internal safety
sensor. If SRS control unit safety sensor senses an impact, it applies
voltage to the air bags. The SRS control unit also features a self-
diagnostic system that monitors the SRS for faults. If a fault is
detected, a code sets in SRS control unit memory.

SRS WARNING LIGHT

When ignition is turned on, SRS warning light illuminates

with other instrument panel lights. If no faults are sensed in the
SRS, the warning light will go out after about 6-10 seconds with
engine off, or go out immediately when engine is started. If SRS
warning light remains on, this indicates a fault in SRS. When vehicle
is moving, SRS control unit informs driver of any faults in SRS by
flashing SRS warning light for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, the SRS
warning light will remain on until fault is repaired and SRS control
unit defect fault code memory is cleared. If SRS warning light fails
to illuminate when ignition switch is turned on, this indicates bulb
is faulty and/or wire circuit to bulb is shorted to ground.

VOLTAGE TRANSFORMER

Voltage transformer is an integral part of SRS control unit.

Voltage transformer boosts SRS power supply voltage to 35 volts to
ignite gas generator pellets in air bag module.

WIRING HARNESS

For easy identification, SRS wiring harness is Orange in

color. SRS wiring harness is not repairable. It must be replaced if
faulty.

SERVICING

Look at date specified on SRS label attached to glove box

door. This date indicates when the SRS must be serviced. Servicing
consists of thoroughly inspecting all SRS components and performing a
SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK.

SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK

Turn ignition switch to ON position. If SRS warning light

does not come on, SRS warning light bulb or circuit is faulty. If SRS
warning light comes on and then goes out after about 6 seconds, SRS is
okay at this time. If SRS warning light does not respond as specified,
SRS is malfunctioning and must be repaired.

sensors and mounting bracket bolts must be tightened to
specification to ensure proper sensor operation. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
* Never use any SRS component that has been dropped from 2 feet
or higher.
* To avoid air bag deployment when trouble shooting SRS, DO NOT
use self-powered electrical test equipment, such as battery-
powered or AC-powered voltmeter, ohmmeter, etc. DO NOT repair
any part of SRS wiring harness.
* Always handle air bag module with trim cover away from your
body. Always place air bag module on workbench with trim
cover up, away from loose objects.
* Never expose SRS components to temperatures greater than
167°F (75°C).
* Never expose any SRS system components to cleaning agents
such as solvents, gasoline, lye, etc.
