Regulations
Entry Requirements
Common regulations for the Master of Science degree in the University of Nairobi and
the School of Mathematics shall be applicable.

Holders of a degree of the University of Nairobi of at least upper second class in


mathematics or statistics or an equivalent qualification from a university recognised
by senate.

Graduates in Economics, Sociology, Psychology, Geography and Commerce, with a


good mathematical background.

Holders of a lower second class degree plus at least two years relevant research
experience or academic work may be considered for admission.

Non-holders of a first degree who can show evidence of relevant research experience
or academic work may be considered for admission provided that they pass relevant
qualifying examinations.
Course Structure
The minimum duration of the course shall be four semesters and the maximum
duration shall be 12 semesters, each of 15 weeks.
A course unit will be defined as consisting of 45 contact hours of lectures, tutorials
and practicals.

Candidates shall be required to take eight level-500 course units, which must include
all the six prescribed core course units. In addition the candidates shall be required to
take four level-600 course units and a project.

The project will be regarded as equivalent to four course units.

Candidates will be required to participate in weekly postgraduate seminars. The


seminars will be of one hour duration, and will cover special topics by means of
lectures and informational conferences.

In each semester candidates shall be required to take a minimum of three course units and
a maximum of five course units
Introduction
The Board of Postgraduate Studies was established in 1985 in order to manage and coordinate
postgraduate studies in the University. The Board is answerable to the University Senate on the
following
 Co-ordination of postgraduate syllabus and regulations.
 Admission of postgraduate students and advertisements.
 Administration of postgraduate scholarships and research grants.
 Administration and processing of postgraduate thesis or research papers.
 Proper conduct and supervision of postgraduate studies.
 General welfare and discipline of postgraduate students.
The Board of Postgraduate Studies is responsible for the coordination, development and
management of Postgraduate Programmes in the University.
