Abstract

Our Elementary school wants to teach students using 21st century technology. They would like

for teachers to integrate more technology into their lessons and feel more comfortable in using

new technology tools. A technology survey was conducted to see how a small group of teachers

felt about some of these tools. The survey revealed that there’s a big need for teacher training.

All the teachers that took the survey indicated that they want more training on “Google Docs”

and they expressed that when learning new technology concepts, they preferred to learn in a

small group environment. None of these teachers have a class website, but most of them feel that

having one would be beneficial.

This proposal is to teach how to use various Google Apps for saving, creating, and collaborating

as well as learn about the settings and sharing permissions on these documents. The teachers will

have an opportunity to practice creating some sample documents and sharing those with a team

member. They will also have the opportunity to start out constructing their class website using

Google Sites. Google Suite is an excellent web 2.0 tool for teachers to use. Creating documents

using this tool would allow for them to collaborate among their team, share presentations, lesson

ideas, create assessments, collect data, host all their information in one place, and communicate

with parents and the community through their class website among many other things.

Proposal

Demonstrated need: A technology survey (Appendix A) was given in the form of a google form

to a group of teachers. One of the questions from the survey was “Do you need more training on
3

Google Docs? ”, all of the teachers who took the survey answered “yes”. Another question was

“Do you have a classroom website?” and all the teachers answered “no”. Since there was this

expressed and evident need, a professional development was proposed.

Goals and Objectives

The goals for this professional development opportunity are:

1.Teachers will use Google Apps

Specific: Teachers will be able to use Google Apps for saving, creating, and collaborating on

various types of documents as well as learn about the settings and sharing permissions on these

documents.

Measureable: Creating various documents on Google Suite will allow teachers the

opportunities to share with colleagues and students. Teachers will create three types of

documents and share with a team member for collaboration. Teachers will complete these tasks

with 100% accuracy.

Achievable: The district will provide professional development for teachers by a Google

Certified trainer/educator.

Results: Google Suite will provide teachers with an effective way to save, create, and

collaborate with colleagues and students.

Time-bound: Teachers will attend training and be able to efficiently save, create, and

collaborate using Google Suite within the training session.

4

2. Teachers will use Google Sites:

Specific: Using Google Sites, the teachers will create their own class website.

Measureable: Teachers’ websites will include a minimum of three pages. Each page will

include four different components. Websites will be created with 100% accuracy.

Achievable: The district will provide professional development for teachers by a Google

Certified trainer/educator.

Results: Google Sites will allow teachers to display and share information and resources easily.

Google Sites can be easily updated and are a great outlet for communication between teachers,

students, and parents.

Time-bound: Teachers will attend training and be able to create a classroom Google Site within

the training session.

Evaluation Plan

Before the training, teachers will be instructed to complete a 10 question pretest on Google Suite

(Appendix C). At the end of the training, the teachers will be asked to complete a post-test

(Appendix D) which contains the same questions. The data will be compared to see growth and

knowledge acquired after the training (Level 2 and 3 Kirkpatrick’s Levels of Evaluation). In

addition, an exit survey (Appendix E) will be emailed to participants the day after the training to

gather information on how they felt about the training experience overall (Level 1 Kirkpatrick’s

Levels of Evaluation). Upon completion of this exit survey, the stipend will be released. Lastly,

ongoing training/coaching will be offered to the teachers throughout a period of time to ensure

that the teacher continues to uses the skills acquired in the training and that their website is
5

finalized and not abandoned after the training session activity (Level 4 Kirkpatrick’s Levels of

Evaluation).

Planned Activities & Budget

This professional development opportunity will take place at a school location in the district and

therefore, there will be no costs for reservation of a space. A Google certified educator will teach

the professional development. Teachers will be asked to bring their own laptops for training and

practice purposes. Teachers will be responsible for securing a laptop from their home school if

they do not have their own. This professional development will take a whole day, and the district

will allow the use of an already designated professional development day for this training to take

place. The training is broken down into learning sessions with practice activities for each session.

We would like to make this a positive and enjoyable experience by accommodating teachers with

lunch. For this we have provided an estimate from Highland Bakery (Appendix B).

Reflection of Effective Professional Development

Activities in the training provide teachers with hands-on, relevant experiences. Teachers will be

able to immediately implement activities from the training into their classroom. Goals are

realistic and broken into manageable parts. Each session of the training focuses on specific parts

of each SMART goal. Teachers will be able to take activities and modify them for continuous

use and collaboration.

In Sessions 1 and 2 teachers will be creating and collaborating on documents they are used to

creating on a weekly basis such as lesson plans, newsletters, and grade level meeting minutes.

Teachers will learn that uploading these documents into a Google Doc will create the opportunity

for continuous and immediate revisions without everyone having to be in the same place at the

same time. Google Suite will be a useful tool in keeping all information in one secure place

accessible anywhere with an Internet connection.

Session 3 will allow teachers to store important resources, helpful links, and easily relay

information in one place. Teachers can add pictures and videos from class. Each teacher will

begin creating their site with three pages, a homepage, class events with a calendar, and a page
8

for homework help and resources. Once teachers understand the basic steps and procedures for

creating each page and adding various elements they will be able to improve and modify the

website to their specific needs.

Each of these sessions will give teachers the tools they need to become up-to-date in the digital

world of collaboration. The training will allow the teachers to become effective collaborators

and communicators. Teachers can begin using Google Apps and Google Sites immediately after

training is complete. This instant application of the training is what makes it effective and most

useful for the teachers.

This is a very valuable training and having teachers implement the use of this technology will

impact students’ education and support our school’s mission of incorporating technology, for this

reason, we would like to provide the attendees with a stipend of $200 each and $300 for the

Google certified teacher/trainer. We will set participation capacity for this training to be at 25

including the google certified educator providing the training. The funding requested for this

would be $5,350.
