Notes from the Music Director . . .

All in the Family is the theme of the new performance season of the Grossmont
Symphony Orchestra & Master Chorale (GSOMC). Our Grossmont musical family
consists of music- and non-music majors, music faculty members, community musicians,
as well as “adopted” musicians who have repeatedly performed with the ensembles over
the years. These family members will be featured in soloist roles, either individually
or as members of a musical project, bringing an exciting season of Classical music to
Grossmont College and audiences throughout the greater San Diego area.

The GSOMC continues the 2018-2019 performance season with their second project
entitled QUEEN featuring Tolga Kashif’s monumental choral/orchestral work honoring
the music of British rock group, Queen. The Queen Symphony is a six-movement
symphonic work that features many of Queen’s iconic melodies . . . from “Bohemian Rhapsody” to “Bicycle Ride.”
The choirs from the San Diego School of Creative & Performing Arts join the members of the Grossmont Master
Chorale & Symphony Orchestra in this highly unique performance. As part of the performance, videographer Erick
Diaz interweaves a multimedia presentation that highlights who Queen actually was and still remains today.

I grew up with the music of Queen and thoroughly remember many of their hit tunes . . . from Somebody to Love to
the inimitable Bohemian Rhapsody. I even remember that song being featured in Mike Myers 1992 film, Wayne’s
World, which propelled the song to number two on the Billboard singles charts 17 years after its first release. Yet, why
program this type of work for performance in a Classical venue based on a rock band’s tunes?

From a cultural point of view, both young and mature know the music of Queen . . . from experiencing it live, either
back in the day, or presently . . . or hearing musical quotes from songs at sporting events like We Will Rock You and
Another One Bites the Dust. It has helped to make the music of Queen live on for decades.

From a musical point of view, there have been plenty of orchestral arrangements based on rock music, from The
Doors to Pink Floyd. But what caught my attention of this unique work was the quality of composition by the
composer, Tolga Kashif, an associate conductor of a major symphony orchestra as well as a composer. This is not
an arrangement of tunes, but rather a choral/orchestral symphony that uses portions of Queen’s tunes as motives that
occur/reoccur throughout the symphony. You will hear fragments of many tunes that rise out of the musical texture,
and because many of these tunes are well known, your conscious thoughts will focus on the work as a whole and not
as just an arrangement. In other words, the Queen Symphony has great gravitas and I’m gratified that so many of the
musicians performing this evening have given their stamp of approval.

I’m delighted to once again welcome the choirs from the San Diego School of Creative & Performing Arts in
tonight’s performance. Their musical director, Andrew Bearden, is a product of the music program at Grossmont
College and he continues to inspire his students at this prestigious school. With Andrew’s experience in both choral
and instrumental music, I’ve invited him to conduct a special performance of Freddie Mercury’s song, Somebody to

of all ages and backgrounds. It is my hope that you’ll enjoy this
performance as much as the musicians have enjoyed preparing this
wonderful work . . . the Queen Symphony.

(Love of My Life, Another One Bites The Dust, in 1970. Their classic line-up was Freddie Mercury

The Grossmont Symphony Orchestra (GSO), and Master Chorale (GMC), are East County’s answer to quality classical
music performances. Under the musical direction of Randall Tweed, the seventy member orchestral and forty member
choral ensembles are comprised of music and non-music majors, music teachers, and talented musicians from the
community. Both ensembles are by audition only!

The String Outreach Program is an educational
program supported by the Friends of Music (under
the auspices of the Foundation for Grossmont &
Cuyamaca Colleges) to further string education
programs in San Diego’s East County Middle and
Senior schools.

PURPOSE: With many areas encompassing San Diego’s East County providing music education beginning at the
Senior School level (Grade 9), e.g., Santee School District, the string outreach program is designed to aid the East
County High School music instructor in providing much needed string pedagogy to string students.
With the majority of instrumental instructors not proficient in playing a string instrument, the members of the
Grossmont Symphony String Quintet (professional artist/teachers), provide much needed instruction on how to
better perform required orchestral literature for music festival participation and school concerts.

FORMAT: Each workshop performed by the members of the Grossmont Symphony String Quintet includes: a

Concert Etiquette
Concerts of classical music are very special events. Rarely in one’s daily living does one encounter history being
recreated. Every work of classical music is a piece of history and the performer or performers serve as a bridge between
the music’s creator and the listener. Thus concerts are encounters which should be treated with the same respect just as
one would while visiting a museum or a place of worship.

Concert Etiquette is a code which polite people live by when they attend a concert. Concert Etiquette does not promote
snobbery or stuffiness but encourages consideration for others and enhances the enjoyment of classical music.

The 3 C’s of Concert Etiquette are:

What to Wear - Dress codes are not enforced at orchestra concerts. Just wear what you feel comfortable in. Smart
casual attire is usually considered adequate and appropriate. In consideration of others, please do not wear excessive
fragrances—fragrances have been documented to cause moderate to migraine type headaches.

Punctuality - It is good to be punctual for concert but it is even better to be slightly early. This will give you time to
settle down, read the program notes and savor the atmosphere.

Late Coming - Don’t worry; it happens even to the most seasoned of the concert-goers! You will not be admitted into
the concert hall until there is a suitable break—this takes place after the first work or first movement of a concerto or
symphony has ended. Do not attempt to find your allocated seat as this will disturb others and hold up the concert.
Instead, either stand at the back of the hall or find an aisle seat nearby.

Cell phones, pagers, digital watch chimes and other noise-makers - Please turn these off or put them on silent mode
before the concert begins. There will be an announcement to remind you if you have forgotten to do so. Once the music
begins, there should be ABSOLUTELY NO NOISE. If you are carry plastic shopping bags or any rustling objects, place
these under your seat.

Applause - There are many occasions for you to applaud in a concert. When the orchestra’s concertmaster enters,
applaud gently. When the conductor and soloist enter, applaud more vigorously. Then allow the music to begin.

Generally, it is considered inappropriate to applaud between movements of a symphony or concerto. Do not feel
embarrassed if you have done so—there is a first time for everything! If you are not sure, just follow the actions of the
more experienced concert-goers.

Post-Concert Rituals - Most people go home directly after a concert but you are welcome to meet the performers
and offer your personal greetings and well wishes. This usually takes place backstage in the concert hall or outside the
backstage door.

Welcome to our 2018-2019 Concert Season! We are very excited about our concert offerings this year;
I encourage you to join us for our performance season as we explore a rich diversity of music from all
corners of the globe.

Friends of Music is dedicated to the support of the Grossmont Symphony Orchestra and Master Chorale,
the Grossmont String Quartet and the Grossmont Woodwind Quintet. First, we strive to support the
Grossmont Symphony Orchestra in presenting diverse classical music to audiences throughout San Diego
County. This often means additional expenses to hire guest soloists, or to buy music scores that can be
beyond the basic season’s budget. Secondly, we support the Spring String Workshops in many local public
middle and high schools. These workshops, in which our String Quintet members mentor young string
players in their own orchestras, have made a big impact upon the students. They are our next musical
generation! Friends of Music members work hard to raise funds to support these goals.

Underwriting opportunities are available for String Outreach Program, and of individual concerts in our series, with program
