DOUBLE ANGLE O-RING VALVE


The Double Angle O-ring Valve is made with a tough one-piece
body to run more hours between change outs. It's made with
carburized premium alloy steel to resist wear, provide a positive
seal, and help protect against wash out or damage to the pump.

The High Temperature Double Angle O-ring Valve body is a
one-piece design, configured to give maximum containment of
the insert with minimum use of material. The valve and insert
configuration has been operated at pressures up to and
exceeding 5,000 psi.

STANDARD PLATE TYPE VALVE


The Standard Plate Type Valve is extremely durable to its premium forged alloy steel body and its unique design.
It has been proven by more than 50 years of oilfield service. To prevent dry pistons and liners at startup, the
valve features a patented double angle polyurethane insert that maintains cylinder priming during pump shut-
down. The precise control of insert pre-load is accomplished with a flat ground insert retaining plate and split
retainers. The insert can be replaced in the field with minimum down time. This valve is designed to fit pumps in
the oilfield and is used with Baker SPD seats.

•Specified for all drilling operation up to and exceeding
3,500 psi
•Maximum temperature rating for the standard polyurethane
insert is 170°F
•Maximum temperature rating for the Buna-N rubber insert is
225°F
•Available with Buna-N rubber or polyurethane inserts

3-WEB PLATE TYPE/DOUBLE ANGLE


VALVE SEAT
Long service life and high flow areas have made this seat the
most popular in the oilfield for over 50 years. Made of
carburized premium alloy steel, the seat resists wear even in
the roughest conditions. The original 3-web design allows
maximum flow area through the seat while providing maximum
seating area for the valve. Precision ground tapers allow this
seat to fit the deck of most pumps.

EXPENDABLE PARTS
The Mud King® Valves and Seats are 100% interchangeable
with Mission®. The body is designed with a pre-loaded insert
utilizing a machined “knock-on” nut retainer plate. This design
allows for field replacement of insert with a minimum of down
time. Valves are available with polyurethane or rubber inserts
to match operating pressure, temperature, and mud type.

WM FULL OPEN VALVE AND SEAT


Baker SPD offers the full open valve and seat design as an
alternative to the web style. This style eliminates the need of
removing the discharge seat when replacing the suction seat
in the over and under valve pot arrangement given to certain
triplex pumps.
The wing guided valve and seat are carburized for extended
service life. Design features provide superior flow character-
WM Full Open Seat, Spring, and Valve istics and maximum flow area. Abrasion resistant polyure-
thane inserts are easily replaced in the field.

DUPLEX AND TRIPLEX REPLACEABLE RUBBER PISTONS


Baker SPD A-Line Pistons are made with nitrile rubber and the piston's maximum pressure capability is due to
this oil, water and heat resistant material. These pistons are fully interchangeable with most other
manufacturers.
Baker SPD pistons are highly resistant to extrusion wear under the highest pump pressures. The A-Line piston
offers maximum resistance to bending and hoop stresses generated by cylinder loads and rod fits; a benefit of
their premium forged alloy steel bodies. Rated for all drilling operations up to 2,500 psi.

BONDED PISTONS Baker SPD

BONDED RUBBER DUPLEX AND TRIPLEX PISTONS


Developed for medium service applications, these pistons are constructed of oil resistant rubber, bonded to a
solid metal hub. This design permits increased movement of the lip and provides a complete liner to piston seal,
even with the enlarged diameter of a worn liner. Rated for all drilling operations up to 2,500 psi.

The Single Durometer Bonded Urethane Triplex Piston
was designed for resistance to extrusion and abrasion
and with water cooling, it will provide optimum perfor-
mance in oil base mud and high drilling pressures.
These pistons are highly resistant to extrusion wear un-
der the highest pump pressures.

BONDED URETHANE TRIPLEX PISTON
The “Blue Streak™” High Temperature Bonded Ure-
thane Triplex Piston is a single durometer urethane pis-
ton designed to cover higher temperature and pressure
capabilities. Resistant to extrusion and abrasion, and
with water cooling this piston will provide optimum per-
formance.

A-LINE TRIPLEX PISTON ROD


This rod offers excellent resistance to fatigue, corrosion, and high loads thanks to its two step heat treated body
with phosphatized-finished alloy steel. The A-Line Triplex Piston Rod fits all pistons manufactured to API
Standard 7.

A-LINE DUPLEX PISTON ROD


Resisting abrasives, corrosion, fatigue, and high loads better than any piston rod in the oilfield, this rod is
actually a heat treated alloy steel bar fuse coated with a layer of nickel chrome boron. This is a technique first
introduced to the industry by Reed American. Featuring a precision ground OD, and numerically controlled
machining of the ends to tighter than authorized API specifications, this rod fits all pumps in the field. The rod's
excellent fatigue resistance is accentuated by a fully interchangeable, but exclusive, modified thread root
design.

A-LINE DUPLEX ROD PACKING


Withstanding the highest pump pressures, this packing performs best under all drilling conditions. The packing's
semi-adjustable design prevents it from collapsing and allows it to resist high pressure extrusion. This packing

EXPENDABLE PARTS
resists the elements due to its woven duck fabric and nitrile construction. The packing comes with individual split
rings that are easy to install and to remove. Packing is recommended for service on pumps handling oilwell
drilling muds, fresh water, salt water, and general petroleum products.

Baker SPD LINERS AND LINER PACKING

A-LINE LINERS FOR TRIPLEX


AND DUPLEX PUMPS
The A-Line designation of these liners indicate unmatched perfor-
mance and durability in most severe drilling conditions.
Constructed to a computer designed shrink fit of a high chrome/iron or
bimetal sleeve into a forged steel hull, the liners offer extreme abra-
sion, resistance, hardness, and corrosion resistance. These liners can
withstand the highest hoop stresses since their hulls are made of high-
grade carbon steel forging. All Baker SPD standard liners are manu-

Sleeves are 26% chrome steel heat treated to RC62 to 66 hardness.
The micro-finish honed ID helps assure piston durability, yet it is not
so smooth as to produce hydroplaning. The OD is numerically con-
trolled, machined precisely to ensure continually correct registers and
sealing surfaces to the pump bore and face.
Liner bore tolerances, tighter than the API specifications, give approx-
imately 5% to 10% bonus hours of service life to the piston and liner,
over and above the extended service life. Combined with a competi-
tive initial cost factor, this extended liner life makes Baker SPD triplex
and duplex A-Line liners the most cost and performance efficient in the
current industry.

A-LINE PACKING
Recommended for high pressure applications. A-Line liner packing
prevents excessive packing extrusion. This packing has an extrusion
resistant design featuring hard corners which are an integral part of
seal rings. The soft nitrile element rubber center establishes fluid seal,
while the hard corners prevent rubber extrusions into the pump bore
and over liner flange shoulders. Except where noted, lantern rings in-
terchange with those furnished by pump manufacturer or lantern rings
A-Line Packing
used in A-Line liner packing.

VALVE CAP, CYLINDER HEAD, AND PLUG SEAL GASKETS


Molded of oil resistant duck and synthetic composition, these fluid end gaskets are designed to handle all drilling
conditions, and afford positive sealing in all areas of both triplex and duplex mud pumps.
Depending on the design, these gaskets are used as liner packing in many triplex and duplex mud pumps, thus
affording an additional cost savings to the drilling company.

14 The Baker SPD Hydraulic Valve Seat Puller was developed for two

reasons: to eliminate damage to fluid ends caused by removing valve

seats with a cutting torch, and to reduce the possibility of personal
injury.

The puller unit can exert a force of over 200,000 pounds on the valve
11 seat. The unit comes complete with a 25-ft hose so that the hand
operated hydraulic pump can be placed at a safe distance from the mud

15 pump during pulling operations. The hose, puller unit, and pump are

equipped with quick disconnect couplings for easy handling. The pump
comes complete with a pressure gauge. The numerically controlled
machined and heat treated puller heads of high alloy steel offer maxi-
mum strength without the stress concentration characteristic of torch
13 burned heads.

Although originally developed to change inserts on Baker SPD valves, this

installation tool has been modified to work on other valve inserts, too. The body
is of sturdy construction from a one piece steel casting. The adjusting screw
provides compression of the insert needed for easy slip fit of the retainer under

the shoulder and on the top stem of the valve.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE FIELD REPLACEMENT OF


BAKER DOUBLE ANGLE O-RING VALVE INSERT
PREPARATION OF VALVE
1. Secure valve flange in a bench vise as shown, and cut off insert with any sharp
tool or 500° maximum heat source.
2. Clean valve cone and insert groove with any hydrocarbon based solvent. File Step No. 1 and 2
smooth any rough or chipped surfaces on the valve cone. Reduce all sharp edg-
es to a 1/64 in. minimum radius. THIS IS IMPORTANT! Wipe clean and dry.
3. With valve upside down and the cone plate positioned as shown, dimension “X” X
must be greater than zero (0) to qualify for subsequent installation of a new insert.
PREPARATION OF FIXTURE
4. Secure Installation Tool #508443 with a socket type shoe in a vise with the bolt
on top, as shown.
5. Apply a light coat of clean medium weight bearing grease to all surfaces indicated
by dotted lines. (Cone and groove of body. Top, inside, and bottom of insert.
Step No. 3

6. Assemble as shown, being certain that the outside cone of the insert is pointed

down, as shown, and that the insert is seated on the centering ridge of the instal-
lation plate. The insert must be concentric with the installation plate. THIS IS IM-
PORTANT!
INSERT INSTALLATION
7. Tighten the bolt two full turns. Recheck insert/plate concentricity. If no eccentric-
ity exists, continue to tighten the bolt to insert installation.
8. If eccentricity exists after two turns (#7 above), back off the bolt and reestablish
insert/plate concentricity before proceeding.
Note: Past experience has shown that turning the bolt by hand has not been very
efficient in assembling inserts. What has proven to be very efficient is the use of an
air wrench. If at all possible, this is the assembly procedure that is recommended to
be used when installing inserts.
INSERT SEATING
9. USE A PLASTIC OR WOODEN MALLET. DO NOT USE A METALLIC HAMMER.
Mallet the minor cone of the insert at one point until insert/groove alignment is ob-
tained, then seat the insert evenly into the groove all around. DO NOT USE A STEEL
HAMMER.

STORAGE
10. To protect the plates from loss and damage while in storage, place a used valve
into the nested cone and installation plates. Place this assembly into the installa-
tion tool and tighten the socket shoe onto the valve top stem to form a unitized
assembly.
Use a plastic or wooden mallet. DO NOT USE A METALLIC HAMMER.

1 in. in diameter.

INSERT INSTALLATION
5. Tighten the vise two [2] full turns. Recheck insert/plate concentricity. If no eccen-
tricity exists, continue to tighten the vise to insert installation.
6. If eccentricity exists after two [2] turns (#5 above), back off the vise and reestab-
lish insert/plate concentricity before proceeding. As vise is tightened more, load
will increase until tightening by hand will no longer be possible. At this point, use
a 5 ft “cheater” pipe on the vise handle will move the insert to installation.
NOTE: The installation plate will go metal to metal against the cone of the body. If the
insert has not rolled over into the groove in the body, place a mallet against the edge
of the insert and with another mallet, hit the first mallet until it drives the insert over
the edge of the body and into the groove. The insert will appear completely distorted.
Remove this assembly from the vise. Remove the installation plate from the body.
Step No. 3, 4, 5, and 6 INSERT SEATING
7. USE A PLASTIC OR WOODEN MALLET. DO NOT USE A METALLIC HAM-
MER. Mallet the minor cone of the insert at one point until insert/groove alignment
is obtained, then seat the insert evenly into the groove all around. DO NOT USE
A STEEL HAMMER. Insert should extend over edge of body cone at least 1/32
in. If any area of insert is larger, continue to use mallet until insert is even all
around.

Use a plastic or wooden mallet.
