Your new home from home
For many of you, student accommodation will be your first time living
independently and we offer you a welcoming environment so that you
instantly feel at home.

Living with us is so much more than just a room. It is a fantastic

opportunity to meet new people, make lifelong friendships and
participate in social events throughout the year.

Being away from home for the first time can come with concerns
such as organising utilities including internet, insurance and electricity.
To make sure you have time to make the most of your experience
as a student we have sorted all of these for you – meaning more time
for your studies and having fun.

You can even live at our Global Community with students from across the
world, or discover sustainable living solutions at our Green Community.

Our Show Home

We have three student villages, all within walking distance from the main
campus. Each village has a range of social spaces, a packed events
calendar and easy access to supermarkets, bars and a thriving city life.

We invite you to discover our Show Home to get a

sleep and socialise.’

Our Accommodation
Open Day
Whilst we can tell you about how great
it is to live with us, we really encourage
you to come and see everything we
have to offer.
All our accommodation can be viewed during our annual
Accommodation Open Day, usually held in March. You will have the
opportunity to speak to students living in the villages and see their
rooms. You may decide to change your accommodation preferences
after visiting us, which you can do easily on the online portal up until
the Guarantee Deadline. See page 17 for further information.

Where would you
like to live?
We understand that your accommodation will be an important part of your
university experience. Therefore, we have many options to suit different
tastes and budgets.

Our options include single study bedrooms with a shared kitchen and
bathroom, and en-suite accommodation with a shared kitchen. We also
have studios and apartments available where you have exclusive use of
the kitchen and bathroom.

There are also different catering options for you to consider. Would you
like self-catered accommodation where you can put your culinary skills
to the test, or would you prefer our popular and flexible Meal Plan option,
which you can use to eat at over 30 outlets across campus and the Vale?

You may also wish to consider whether you would prefer living in
mixed-sex or single-sex accommodation. During the application process
you will be able to select your preferred accommodation options.

No matter what your preference, we are confident that you’ll have

a fabulous time. You can learn more about our residences from
page 8 onwards.

‘I have cereal for breakfast in my

flat, and use my Meal Plan for lunch
and dinners. I use it on campus
either in the Library Cafe, Go Central
or Starbucks, and get a sandwich or
jacket potato. For dinner I get a meal
and a drink from InFusion – sometimes
I get a dessert too.’

Meal Plan
Taking the hassle out of filling up the fridge and having to cook each day,
Meal Plan offers you easy and flexible dining options with a wide variety of
foods available.

We’ve taken the best bits of traditional catered accommodation:

n Gettingtogether with friends over a meal

n Avoidinglong supermarket queues
n Cashless
n No washing up!

And created our flexible alternative called Meal Plan. We’ve removed the
old fashioned approach of eating at set times in the same place, and
rejuvenated it with an assortment of different meal options and locations.

Meal Plan is more than just an accommodation choice, it is a lifestyle.

It offers you a fantastic opportunity to meet new friends in a relaxed
environment.

We’ve made it simple – £55 on your student card to spend on your

meals, including £5 on us! You can spend this on a wide variety of
delicious food and drink at over 30 locations across campus and the Vale.
Not only is it a stress free way to plan your meals, it also helps you to
allocate your food budget.

With Meal Plan you don’t need to spend your time worrying about what
to cook every night or what groceries to get in. The hardest part is
deciding who to meet up with and what you fancy to eat.

Flexible. Sociable. Tasty.

For more information visit: www.birmingham.ac.uk/mealplan

A typical day on Meal Plan:

Breakfast Grab a large box of cereal from InFusion to keep in your
kitchen for breakfast all week or you may fancy a full
English breakfast at InFusion.
Lunch Dig into a jacket potato with cheese and beans at the
food court or grab a sandwich on the go.
Dinner Sit down for fajitas at InFusion or grab a takeaway pizza.

offers you so much
more than just a bedroom
Coming to university is very exciting, but it also
comes with a degree of uncertainty. We have
a number of services in place to make sure
that there is always support available no matter
how big or small your worries may be.

Accommodation Pass
Once you have secured your accommodation you can access our interactive
Accommodation Pass, which is an online induction packed full of useful
information, including what you can expect when you arrive and who you
should contact with queries and much more.

We have our own accommodation App full of helpful features,
including maps of the villages, an events calendar and you can
even view the progress of your laundry.

Student Mentor Scheme

Our student mentors are available throughout the year
Advice
to offer advice and guidance. & Guidance

Made up of existing students, our mentors offer a wealth of information,

having been through exactly the same sorts of things only one or two years
previously. Student mentors also organise social events at the villages
during Welcome Week and throughout the year. Find out more at:

their fellow residents, the committee, which is made up of first

year students, represents your needs to the University, working
hard to ensure you receive the best possible living experience.

The committee is responsible for arranging a host of activities that will help
you make friends and settle into your new home. Past events have included
winter balls, sports competitions and trips to local attractions. For more

Innovation
and sustainability
At the University of Birmingham, we put
sustainability at the heart of accommodation.

Our villages are built with sustainability at the heart, not only do you have
comprehensive recycling facilities right on your doorstep but the majority
of our accommodation is powered by our own Combined Heat and Power
stations providing a more sustainable solution to heating your room.

We are also a Fairtrade University and were founders of the multi-award-

winning student-led community project, Junkbusters, which has raised in
excess of £125,000 for the British Heart Foundation thanks to students’
donations of belongings that they no longer require.

We have achieved all of this and so much more with the help and ideas of
our student community.

Our Green Community

In 2016 we launched the Green Community, an exciting living option

available to 184 students that share a passion for sustainability.
The Green Community features 272 solar panels, apple trees, bird
boxes and so much more, offering you a truly unique living experience.

Set in the beautiful surroundings of lakeside parkland, The Vale Village is
our largest accommodation site. It is home to more than 3,500 students in
eight residences and the only village offering Meal Plan accommodation.

It is a thriving community, which hosts a number of popular social events

throughout the year including a spectacular fireworks display and Vale
Fest, a student-run music, dance and comedy festival.

The Hub, located at the heart of the village, is a great place for you to
meet up with your new friends in one of the bars, cafes or restaurants.
There is also a convenience store, a 24-hour reception and social spaces
for you to study or relax in.
