the brain and the computer
recent studies in the computer industry make scientists predict that the difference between
humans and computers will disappear by the year 2050.
to understand the significance of this prediction, we need to compare the human brain with
existing computers. the adult human brain typically weighs about 3 pounds, it consumes electrical
energy at the rate of 20 watts and occupies a volume of 1500 cm3. within this volume, the brain
stores between 10 billon pieces of information. the most powerful computers today have
memories that hold only a few million items of inmediately accessible information, these
machines use 100,000 watts of electrical power and occupy hundreds of cubic feet of space. their
capacity is far less than that of the brain.
the superiority of the brain is even more striking. every brain cell is directly connected to many
other cells. this makes it possible for those cells to communicate on a subconscious level, which
results in intiution, insight, perception and creative inspiration. the computer, in contrast, has no
thinking capacity and no connections elsewhere.
compared to the human brain, the most powerful computer today is hopelessly inadequate.
