tors, critics, and film fans together
for showings of classics and old fa-
vorites, made-in-Virginia premieres,
and sneak peaks at acclaimed new
work. Panel discussions, children’s
programming, a 72-hour amateur
film-making competition, and parties
with Hollywood luminaries round
out the long, stimulating weekend.
Last year’s attendance of 19,000
was the festival’s highest ever. This
year, from November 4-7 at theaters
downtown and on the grounds of the
University of Virginia, festival direc-
tor Jody Kielbasa is giving fans more
choices than ever, as he presents a
record-breaking 100+ films, up from
85 the year before. Radnor, Guill-
ermo Del Toro, Tom Shadyac, Peter
Bogdanovich and other movie indus-
try heavyweights will be on hand to
talk about their work. Actress Paige
O’Hara, the voice of Belle in the Dis-
ney classic Beauty and the Beast, will
entertain on Family Day.

exemplify what Kielbasa calls “the
era of hyphenate in the film world,”
in which the industry’s biggest
names often play many roles. One
of the “New Hollywood” directors
who dominated American film in the
1970s, Bogdanovich is also a writer,
actor, producer, critic and film histo-
rian. Kielbasa lauds him for “charting
his own course, and in the process
creating some of the most unforget-
table stories and characters we have
ever seen on screen.”

you are older than 50, the limit rises
