Q & A for API 570 Practice Exam (150 Questions)

INSTRUCTIONS: THIS PROBLEM COVERS QUESTIONS 1 – 5 ON THIS PAGE!!!
Inspection records contain this information for a CML having a low reading in a Carbon Steel
elbow located in a piping circuit (Crude Unit H²S Service). Original (new) thickness measured
0.975 inches during a Baseline UT performed in 2002. After 5 years’ service, in 2007, the elbow
measured 0.900 inches. In 2012, the elbow measured .825 inches after 10 years. Other Info: The
.825 inch thickness is the low reading in this piping circuit that showed consistent corrosion and
metal loss over a 10 year service life. Pressure Design thickness = .400 inches and the structural
design thickness = .500 inches (Design is 500 psig @ 400°F). 24 NPS insulated line was noted to
be in very good condition with no visible damage in 2012. Piping Circuit designation = Class 1.
1. On the basis of information above, short-term & long-term corrosion rate for circuit is:
A) 1.5 MPY B) 3.0 MPY C) 10.0 MPY D) 15 MPY
Answer = D … Solution: .975 - .825 = .150 ÷ 10 years = .015 or 15 mils per year (LT rate) .900 - .825
= .075 ÷ 5 years = .015 or 15 mils per year (ST rate) Use either rate in RL calc
Reference: API 570, Para. 7.1.1 (Formula 2 & 3 for ST& LT Corrosion Rate)
2. On the basis of information above, remaining life & half remaining life of this circuit is:
A) 22 years RL and 11 years @ ½ RL B) 28 years RL and 14 years @ ½ RL
C) 32 years RL and 16 years @ ½ RL D) 38 years RL and 19 years @ ½ RL
Answer = A … Solution: .825 (actual thickness) - .500 (t required) = .325 mils of RL ÷ .015 (15MPY
Corrosion rate) = 21.66 yrs RL (ST& LT rate are the same) Ref: 570, Para. 7.1.1 …Formula for RL
3. On the basis of information above, minimum required thickness or t required for this
piping circuit is:
A) 0.200 inches B) 0.400 inches C) 0.500 inches D) 0.825 inches
Answer = C … minimum required thickness or t required = greater of pressure design t (.400) or
structural design t (.500) = .500 inches = “C” … Ref: API 570 Definition 3.51 (Min. req’d thickness)
4. On the basis of info above, the maximum inspection intervals for this piping circuit are:
A) UT Thickness insp interval = 5.0 years & Visual external inspection interval = 5 years
B) UT Thickness insp interval = 7.0 years & Visual external inspection interval = 5 years
C) UT Thickness insp interval = 8.0 years & Visual external inspection interval = 5 years
D) UT Thickness insp interval = 9.5 years & Visual external inspection interval = 5 years
Answer = A … Ref: API 570, Para. 6.3.3 & 6.3.4 & Table 2 … Class 1 = 5 years UT or ½
RL = 11 (use the lesser) = 5 years for UT interval & External Visual = Table 2 value = 5 yrs
5. On basis of info above, extent of NDE required after a 2012 visual inspection for CUI is:
A) 50% at areas within susceptible temp range B) 33% at areas within susceptible temp range
C) 10% at areas within susceptible temp range D) None of these is correct based on API 570
Answer = D … Ref: API 570, Para. 5.5.6  2nd Para. … No suspect damage  No removal
If external coverings are in good condition and there is no reason to suspect damage behind

Q & A for API 570 Practice Exam (150 Questions)
6. What is the minimum required thickness of a blank made of ASTM A516 Gr. 70 Plate
with a with a ring joint design (Size 2 NPS Class 600 Flange) in a piping system with a
design pressure of 400 psi @ 400°F & Corrosion Allowance = .250 inches?

A) .325 inches B) .442 inches

C) .559 inches D) .665 inches

SHOW YOUR WORK & CHOOSE CORRECT FORMULA IN THE SPACE BELOW:

Apply formula 15 of ASME B31.3

Step 1 … Solve 3P & 16SE … 3P = 400 x 3 = 1200 … 16 SE = 16 x 21,600 (E=1) = 345,600

Step 2 … (3P ÷ 16SE) or 1200 ÷ 345,600 = .0034722 … Remember “c” is saved for last!!!
Step 3 … The square root of .0034722 = .058925, and dg = 3.250 x .058925 = .1915 = .191 in.
Step 4 … Add CA last … Solution is .191 inches + .250 inches = .442 inches = Answer = B

7. What is the minimum required thickness, given the design conditions below for an
existing piping system in a local refinery? Given: Design Pressure & Temp = 600 psig @
500°F, ASTM A-106 Gr. B, Pipe is 24 NPS and the structural minimum design thickness
for the 24 NPS system = .250 inches
A) 0.038 inches B) 0.250 inches
C) 0.380 inches D) 0.520 inches

SHOW YOUR WORK & CHOOSE CORRECT FORMULA IN THE SPACE BELOW:

Answer = C … use tm = PD ÷ 2(SE) … Barlow’s Formula … API 574, Sect. 11.2

First, solve PD & SE values separately, quickly, efficiently & double check them.
PD = 14400 (600 x 24*) … *24 = 24 NPS OD value in API 574 Pipe Schedules (Table 1 = CS)
SE = 19,000 (A-1 Tables) … Table A-1 ASME B31.3 must be tabbed at CS pipe & other areas
Note: E = 1.0 for seamless pipe specs like A-106  Tab Table A-1B ASME B31.3
tm = 14400 ÷ 2 (19,000) or 38,000 = .380 in. or .250 in., use the greater*  .380 inches = C
*API 574 Section 11.1 & 11.2 covers structural minimum thickness rules  Be sure you know it
Tip # 1: If your value is not listed above in one of the four answers … Consider the fact that
common errors include simple math & selection of wrong values when working calcs. Make sure
that you always double check the math and NEVER RUSH when in Table A-1 because the
letters are SO SMALL & often a wrong value for “ksi” is applied based on wrong temp column
or material row selected by mistake. Lesson Learned: Double check all A-1 Table values.
Tip # 2: If you are very close to an answer, but maybe are one of two or a few mils off, consider
that your Pipe OD value used may be incorrect … 10.750 versus 10.625, etc … Recheck API
574 Pipe Schedules and apply the correct OD piping value or recheck other factors, especially E.

Q & A for API 570 Practice Exam (150 Questions)
8. Determine Corrosion Rate (LT or ST), UT thickness Insp Interval (Class 1 piping) and
MAWP of corroded pipe … Given: Design pressure/temp = 300 psig/500°F for A106 Gr B,
Pipe = NPS 20 STD Wall, baseline “t” 2002 = .360 in., in 2007 = .330 in., in 2012 = .300 in.
Has RL greater than 10 years, and assume a proposed 5 year interval for the MAWP calc!

A) Corr rate is 5 MPY, UT insp interval = 10 yrs, MAWP = 248 psi  interval = Not acceptable
B) Corr rate is 6 MPY, UT insp interval = 5 years, MAWP = 365 psi  interval = Acceptable
C) Corr rate is 6 MPY, UT insp interval = 5 years, MAWP = 456 psi  interval = Acceptable
D) Corr rate is 5 MPY, UT insp interval = 10 years, MAWP = 365 psi  interval = Acceptable

SHOW YOUR WORK & CHOOSE CORRECT FORMULA IN THE SPACE BELOW:

Answer = C … API 570, Para. 7.2 & Table 4 Examples: When MAWP is recalculated, wall
thickness used in calcs shall be actual thickness as determined by inspection (5.6 definition)
minus twice* the estimated corrosion loss before the date of the next inspection (6.3.3).
Step # 1: Determine corrosion rate  30 mils lost in 5 yrs (both LT & ST intervals) = 6mpy
Observation: A uniform corrosion rate exists  Both LT & ST = 6 MPY
Step # 2: Determine correct UT inspection interval! Use 5 years for a MAWP calculation
Step # 3: Estimated corr. loss (ECL) in 5 yrs = 30 mils, & 2* x ECL = 60 mils (Para. 7.2)
Step # 4: Utilize the correct formula & values per API 570 Table 4 for MAWP = 2SEt ÷ D,
& use ASME B31.3 to find S = 19,000 (table A-1 value @ 500F), E = 1.0 (Table A-1B value)
t = .240  .300 (actual t) minus twice the estimated corrosion loss in 5 yrs or .060 = .240
MAWP = 2 (19,000) (1.0) (.240) ÷ 20 (From API 574 pipe schedules) = See math below
MAWP = 38,000 x .240 ÷ 20 = 9,120 ÷ 20 = 456 psi
Conclusion: 456 psi exceeds 300 psi design = the 5 year proposed interval is acceptable 
9. What is the minimum metal temperature that is exempt from impact testing for piping
specification API 5L, Gr X-60 having a 1.250 inch nominal thickness?
A) 80°F (26.7°C) B) 44°F (6.7°C) C) 6°F (-14.4°C) D) None of these is correct
Answer = A … Ref: Table A-1 Column = “A” value See A-1 Note 6  See 323.2.2b
& Table & Fig 323.2.2A  Row 1.25 in. (31.8 mm)/Curve A Column  26.7°C or 80°F
10. What is the minimum metal temperature to be maintained during a hydrotest (brittle
fracture considerations) when using API 5L, Gr X-60 pipe (1.250 inch nominal thickness)?
A) 80°F = MDMT exempt from IT, plus API 570 safety factor = 90°F
B) 44°F = MDMT exempt from IT, plus API 570 safety factor = 54°F
C) 6°F = MDMT exempt from IT, plus API 570 safety factor = 36°F
D) 6°F = MDMT exempt from IT, plus API 570 safety factor = 16°F
Ans = A … Ref: 570, Par. 5.8.3 = 80°F (26.7°C) + 10°F (6 °C) Rule above MDMT for tests
Solution: Answer question 9 correctly, then apply the appropriate API 570 rule of 10°F
because the metal thickness is 2 inches and below

temperature and the mist spray of a cooling tower. According to API 570, how much of the
minimum area is recommended for NDT survey for CUI during an external inspection?
A) 100 sq. ft. B) 50 sq. ft. C) 66 sq. ft. D) 150 sq. ft.
Answer: C (See API 570 Table 3 and apply rules for Class 2) … 200 x 33% = 66 sq. feet
41. Actual thickness measured at a TML was 0.400 inches. Corrosion rate is 10 mpy. If the
next planned thickness inspection is after 6 years, what thickness is used for MAWP calcs?
A) 0.400 inch B) 0.340 inch C) 0.280 inch D) None of these
Answer: C (API 570, Para. 7.2 … See the last two paragraphs & example in Table 7-1)
MAWP thickness used shall be Actual Thickness minus twice the corrosion loss up to next
inspection. Corrosion loss (6 yrs) = 60 mils … Corrosion loss (6 yrs) x 2 = 120 mils (0.12 in)
Therefore, 0.4 – 0.12 = 0.28 inch
42. Determine MAWP from the following given information and state whether the
proposed interval of 5 years is acceptable: API 5L Grade X-60 (Fusion welded), NPS 16
Sch. 160, Piping installed 1982 (No baseline UT records) 2007 UT = 1.279 inches, 2012 UT =
1.115 in, Design = 500 psig/400ᴼF
A) 468 psig, 5-yr interval = proposed interval of 5 years is unacceptable

C) 975 psig, 5-yr interval = proposed interval of 5 years is acceptable
D) 2336 psig, 5-yr interval = proposed interval of 5 years is acceptable
Step # 1 … Do Corrosion rate … 1.279 – 1.115 = 0.164 in. or 164 Mils ÷ 5 = .0328 in/yr or 32.8 MPY
Step # 2 … Determine “ t “ … 1.115 inches – (2 x ECL  0.164) = 1.115 in - .328 = 0.787 inches = t
Step # 3 … Determine S  A-1 Table (B31.3), Determine E (A-1B Tables), & “D” (API 574 Table 1)
Step # 4 … 2SEt÷D = (2)(25,000)(0.95)(.787) ÷ 16 = 47,500 (.787) = 37,382.5 ÷ 16 = 2336 = OK = “D”

 A53 Gr. B: 11, 11.5, 9 (Non-deoxidized)
 Assume that full size 10 mm specimens were taken
Your assessment of these impact test results is that:
A) Both A106 Gr. B and A53 Gr. B specimens are acceptable
B) Both A106 Gr. B and A53 Gr. B specimens shall be rejected
C) Only A53 Gr. B specimens can be accepted
D) Only 106 Gr. B specimens shall be accepted
Answer: C (B31.3, Table 323.3.5, See also A-1 Values for specified min. tensile strength)

A106 Gr B (deoxidized) tensile strength = 60 ksi, & average of 3 values required =13 ft/lb
Note: A106 Gr B (deoxidized) material MINIMUM VALUE (1 specimen) = 10 ft/lb
A53 Gr B (Non-deoxidized) tensile strength = 60 ksi, & average of 3 values req’d =10 ft/lb
Note: A53 Gr B (Non-deoxidized) material MINIMUM VALUE (1 specimen) =7 ft/lb
A quick look reveals that all 6 Charpy specimen values MEET MINIMUM REQMTS
Now, let’s average the 3 values as follows:
Average for A106 Gr B = 12.5 + 13.5 + 12 = 38 ÷ 3 = 12.66 < 13 = FAILURE
