1.0 INTRODUCTION
GIS technology integrates common database operation such as query and statistical
analysis with the unique visualization and geographic analysis benefits make it valuable to a
wide range to public and private enterprises for explaining events, predicting outcomes, and
planning.
GIS is widely accepted as a tool for the establishment of integrating spatial and
attribute data. In recent years the development of Geographical Information System (GIS)
makes timely accessible of spatial and temporal data. Moreover, its capability of spatial
analysis and presentation makes it useful tool for this kind of applications.
Data collection for this project is the location of various types of retaining wall in
UKM that will lead to effective and efficient planning for better management. There are various
types of retaining wall which are:
Concrete block
Stone Veneer
Poured Concrete
Brick
Wood
Boulders
Gabion
Timber
Natural Stone
Limestone
2.0 OBJECTIVES
• To locate and determine the location of retaining wall inside UKM region along the
main route.
• To apply the knowledge on using the ArcGIS application by inserting all the
4.0 METHODOLOGY
6.0 CONCLUSION
In conclusion, there are 19 retaining walls built in UKM. The longest retaining wall
lies in Faculty of Science & Technology (FST) new building area (near the hilly road to
Pendeta Za’ba College) which is 98 meters long while the shortest retaining wall is located
at the edge of the UKM field (near Danau UKM) which is 16 meters long.
Furthermore, the highest retaining wall is located in Faculty of Science & Technology
(FST) new building area which is 5.95 meters height while the lowest retaining wall is
located at the front of the UKM Mosque which is as high as 0.83 meters only.
Besides that, stone veneer and concrete block are the most common materials to create
a retaining wall, respectively, in six different locations. While only 2 locations are using
brick as a material making the retaining wall, both are located in Faculty of Law (FUU)
area.
The geographical features of the hilly terrain in UKM cause the retaining wall to be
constructed because the retaining walls able to reduce the amount of cut and fill processes.
So, by building a retaining wall, we can reduce the cost of a project in addition to
maintaining the structure of the land and ecosystems in the project area.
