CRITIQUE PAPER

A critique paper is a writing about one’s commentary on a certain topic. It aims to evaluate the
merits of a certain work, to appraise its strengths, and to expose its weaknesses. It is an exercise altogether
of critical thinking and constructive criticism framed in the context of academic discourse writing.

A. Content
1. Commentary on Introduction
 Is the research problem real? How does the research approach the problem?
 What is the research gap? Is it explained thoroughly?
 Are the research questions stated implicitly or explicitly? Either way, are they defined well
to address the research problem?

2. Commentary on Method
 How did the research establish the validity and reliability of its instruments?
 What statistical methods were used? Are they appropriate? Do they suit the objectives of
the research?
 If you find the method lacking, what would you suggest to have been done?

3. Commentary on Results and Discussion


 Is the presentation of results reader-friendly? Does the research direct you to be able to
make sense of it?
 Is the discussion carried out in light of the declared related literatures and studies?
 Does the discussion clearly address the problems stated in the Introduction?

4. Epilogue
 On what other aspects of the research do you find worth commenting?
 Does the research find its purpose? Where does its significance rest?
 Can you add to the recommendations?

B. Assessment Scheme

Each section of the paper is worth ten (10) points, making a total of forty (40) points. The
breakdown is as follows.

 Is the discussion in-depth? Are the critical commentaries weighted and valid? Does the 4
critique make sense?
Mechanics
 Is the critique free of grammar errors? If there is any, are the errors grade appropriate? 3
Do the errors affect reading comprehension?
Style
 Is the paper written in objective academic style? Is citation used? Are the words used 3
in correct perspective?
