Learn a few handy words or phrases

Whilst Arabic is the official language Dubai is effectively bilingual – road signs, maps
and daily newspapers are in English, and most Emiratis speak the language well. Meeting
your hosts halfway is the least that you can do, the look of sheer delight on a local’s face
when they hear you speaking their language makes it so worthwhile. For those wanting to
become fluent in Arabic there are a number of places offering courses.
2. Dress modestly and sensibly
Men and women should dress sensibly. Swim wear should be reserved for the beach or
swimming pool and beach-goers should be aware that topless sunbathing and nudity are
prohibited. Loose modest clothing is recommended where revealing clothing is likely to
draw unwanted attention. Women don’t have to wear a veil or cover their shoulders, but
should keep in mind local sensibilities when dressing, particularly if visiting crowded
public places such as souks or shopping malls. You should also dress more
conservatively during the holy month of Ramadan.
3. . DO NOT FALL INTO THE “GLAMORIZED” TRAP.
4. I admit, I fell into it. When I arrived in Dubai, I lived a very glamorized life because it was so new to me and I can’t believe
that I can afford all these glitzy things in Dubai. I lived a life which is more than what I can afford, I maxed out two of my
credit cards with 5-digit limits and I was on the verge of totally ruining the reason why I came here in the first place – to save
enough money. This is probably the easiest way to put yourself in a miserable situation while in Dubai and it’s a mistake
which almost everyone makes when they’ve just arrived here. People fall into the pit of credit cards and loans. Bank agents are
practically waving all these luxuries right at your face but then, once you’ve fallen into the pit – you’re practically screwed. In
Dubai, you can be jailed if you are unable to pay your bills. You are not even allowed to leave the country if you’ve got a huge
amount of unpaid bills. Thankfully, I was able to get my act together before this even happens to me and was able to get
myself out of debt. I lived a millionaire’s life in 2 years and paid for it for 4 years. Hahaha.

6. Do’s and don’t in the UAE

Dancing is allowed in the privacy of your home or at licensed clubs and events. But
dancing in public is classed as indecent and provocative.
Personal safety the UAE is a relatively safe country from a crime perspective
.nevertheless, when you are out and about, take the necessary precautions to stay safe just
as you would do if you were in your own country . if you are going to visit bars and clubs
, do not accept drink from strangers , and never leave your drink unattended . while rare,
having your drink spiked in the UAE can happen.
Holding hands for married couple is tolerated but kissing and hugging are considered
offences against public decency. Open displays of affection are generally not tolerated.
Offensive language spitting and aggressive behavior (including hand and gesture) are
viewed very seriously and can result in imprisonment and deportation. This include “road
rage”
Respect for religion Islamic religious values are greatly respected in the UAE . showing
any disrespect toward religious beliefs or practice is considered deeply offensive and very
likely to result in a heavy fine and or imprisonment, other religion are respected and can
be followed by the expatriate community.
Sexual harassment or randomly addressing women in public or taking their photos
without permission is strictly frowned upon.
