Ashoka will soon be rolling out Ashoka Hub—a limited-access space designed by and for members of the Ashoka
community to connect and exchange.

Ashoka Fellow Nick Reville, who is helping test the site, recently placed this offer:

“My organization - pculture.org - has a new open-source tool that I think is the best way in the world to add subtitles and
captions to web videos. With such a global group of Ashoka fellows, I thought that lots of you might have videos that you
would want translated and made accessible for deaf viewers. One of the best things about the system is that it's
collaborative- so you can ask your viewers and supporters to do the translations together, like a wiki. All you have to do is
enable the tool on your videos. The project is called Universal Subtitles: http://universalsubtitles.org/”

Get Ready to Enter: Sustainable Urban Housing - Collaborating for Livable and Inclusive Cities
Competition begins November 5, 2010

Changemakers, with the support of the Rockefeller Foundation, will being accepting entries in the Sustainable Urban
Housing: Collaborating for Liveable and Inclusive Cities competition on November 5. 2010. The top solutions, policies, and
ideas for urban housing, and the best new models for meaningful and effective collaboration that integrate the work of
community leaders, urban planners, academics, transportation specialists, credit and financial institutions, waste and
sanitation experts, architectural and public policy professionals, and local governments, will be awarded US $10,000.
Competition partners include the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the American Planning
Association, and the U.S. Department of State. The competition is being launched in anticipation of the 2012 Summit of the
Americas, and in support of U.S. President Barack Obama‟s Energy and Climate Partnership for the Americas (ECPA). It
seeks collaborative solutions that build affordable, safe, sustainable, and inclusive urban housing that respects local cultures,

Voting Begins on October 29 for the G-20 SME Finance Challenge


A call for the best models for public-private partnerships that catalyze finance for small and medium enterprises (SMEs)
brought 340 entries from across the globe for the G-20 SME Finance Challenge, a unique collaboration between the Group
of 20 and Ashoka‟s Changemakers, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation. Up to 15 winners will be invited to the
November 2010 G-20 Summit in Korea to be recognized for their innovative ideas. Winners will then be connected with
donors and investors at an SME conference in Germany following the Korea Summit. The G-20 is collectively committed to
mobilizing the public share of the funding needed to implement winning proposals from development banks and interested
bilateral donors. Canada pledged $20 million to scale-up the competition‟s winning solutions. The following institutions have
indicated their support for implementing scalable and sustainable SME financing proposals, including those from the
Challenge, in partnership with the private sector: IFC and the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Inter-
American Development Bank Group, the African Development Bank, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and
