August 2013 Supplementary Examinations

Course: Operations Research Duration: 3 Hours

Course Code: 11ME7IEOPR Max Marks: 100
Date: 27.08.2013
Instructions:
1. Answer one question from each unit
2. Use of statistical tables permitted

UNIT-1

l.a) Explain the important phases ofO.R.'s study. 05

b) A company distributes 2 products and it can either buy them from another company or 15
it can make them in its own plant. The cost of each alternative and the production
rates are as follows.

Decision Product- A Product- B

Buy Rs. 10/unit Rs. 17/unit
Make Rs. 12/unit Rs. 15/unit
Production Rate 3unitslhr 5unitlhr

The company must have 100 units of'A' and 200 units of'B' atleast/week. There
are 40 hrs of productive time for the week and idle time costs Rs. 25/hr. Furthermore,
no more than 60 units of 'A' and 120 units of 'B' can be made each week. Formulate
this as an L.P. Problem with cost minimization as the objective.

4.a) A company has team of four salesman and there are four districts where the company
wants to start its business. After taking into account the capabilities of salesman and
the nature of districts, the company estimates the profit per day in rupees for each
salesman in each districts is as below

iii) Find the critical path.

UNIT-4

6.a) The rate of arrival of customers at a public telephone booth follows Poisson's
distribution, with an average time of 10 minutes between one customer and the next.
The duration of a phone call is assumed to follow exponential distribution, with a
mean time of 3 minutes.
i) What is the probability that a person arriving at the booth will have to wait?
ii) What is the average length of the non-empty queues that form from time to time?
iii) The telephone department will install a second booth when it is convinced that the
customers would expect waiting for atleast 3 minutes for their turn to make a call. By
how much time should the flow of customers increase in order to justify a second
booth?
iv) Estimate the fraction of a day that the phone will be in use. 10

b) Use dominance rule to solve the following

b) Use graphical method to minimize the time needed to process the following jobs on
machines A, B,C, D and E. Find the total elapsed time to complete both the jobs.
Also find for each job the machine on which it should be processed. Processing time
in hours.
