March 24 hosted its first of the two
annual sports and family event at
Papatoetoe Recreation Grounds.
The sports day event organised activities
for people of all age groups- fun activities for
the children, Kabaddi, volleyball and football
for the men, musical chair for women and race
activities for the senior citizens.
Six teams participated in the football
tournament, six teams in the Kabaddi
tournament and nine teams in volleyball.
“SBS Club hosts two sports every year
events under NZ Kabaddi Federation, one in
March-April and the second one in September-
October,” Tirath Singh Atwal, Secretary of NZ
Kabaddi Federation told The Indian Weekender.
“The main highlight of the sports event is
Kabaddi, as we get several teams from outside
Auckland and it is the most popular sports for
our community here,” Mr Atwal added.

fter nearly two weeks since
the Christchurch attack,
there has been an outpouring

Indian High Commission. The

everyone including the missions, as
they had to deal with cases of their
nationals caught in this dreadful
act of violence – especially in a
country whose collective empathetic
response to the crisis is already
attracting global recognition.
Indeed, delivering support and
services wherever required and
possible, against such a backdrop,
always raises the bars of expectations
from foreign missions.
The Indian Weekender team on
the ground in Christchurch raised
the issue about this perceived
lack of visibility of the office of
the High Commission with High
Commissioner Sanjiv Kohli himself,
while he was visiting the families of
injured and deceased.
“We were on the ground pretty
early gathering information on Indian

Commission on the ground, Mr Kohli
acknowledged their apprehensions as

“I think some people didn’t know
what was happening. From the time
this horrific attack took place, we set
up helplines. We were in touch with
everyone, both here and in Delhi.
Things were going right up to the
External Affairs Minister, who was
herself monitoring everything. So we
all have a job to do, and it’s not in our
business to publicise things.
“But once we have spoken to
people here, they realised a lot of
work has been happening — getting
visas for the people who wanted to
come, coordinating with people
concerned that they are able to take
the earliest possible flights.
“A Christchurch support group
was created on Whatsapp consisting
of community leaders, helmed by
the Indian High Commission. This
group volunteered time and services
to ensure families who lost their
loved ones and those injured would
be helped.
“The relatives themselves know
our people have been going there,
meeting them. Everyone has risen
to the occasion, everyone is putting
in the effort, and we appreciate their
efforts, including those who probably
feel that the other side should’ve
done more.

When asked about the role played
in the repatriation of 5 deceased
Indian nationals, he said, “The

that the relatives needed, but had
been waiting for the local authorities
to release the bodies.”
Upon release, two officials
were sent separately to hand over
documents to families for taking the
bodies back.
It is to be noted that five Indian
nationals lost their lives and three
were gravely injured and are
currently undergoing treatment in
Christchurch Hospital. The families
of at least two deceased had chosen
to repatriate their loved ones back to
India, which was organised within 24
hours after their bodies were released
by New Zealand police.
The Christchurch Support group is
still active on the ground with support
from the Kiwi-Indian and the wider
communities and providing care to
the injured victims in Christchurch
Hospital.

the AGM was that two new statues

Gandhi Centre. The statue of Sai
Baba and Jalaram Bapu will be
brought and placed inside the temple
premises soon this year.
The AGM was attended by Board of Trustees,
the office bearers, donor members and some
distinguished guests from the community.
Following a very successful year for AIAI
Inc., the previous office bearers retained their
positions to continue their work and serve the
community.
“All Office Bearers retained their respective
positions, Narendrabhai Bhana was re-elected
as the President, Dhansukhbhai Lal Vice-
President, Dr Lingappa Kalburgi General
Secretary, Champaben Patel Assistant Secretary,
Himansu Patel Assistant Secretary, Hershad
Jairam Treasurer and Barwant Bhikha Assistant

Indian PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, prayer service
for the victims of Christchurch mosque attack,
among others.
“Auckland Indian Association had a very
successful year, and I thoroughly enjoyed
being the president of such a prestigious
organisation,” President Narendra Bhana told

Mr Bhana also expressed his sincere
thanks to Office Bearers, Board of Trustees,
sub-committee Chairpersons and volunteers
for their invaluable support throughout the

Mr Jairam presented Treasurers’ report
indicating that although the AIAI showed a
lower surplus in 2018 than in 2017, there were
extraordinary items in that the AIAI made a
donation of $16,000 to the Starship Foundation,
and also deferred $15,000 revenue to 2019
owing to revenue recognition principles. The
donation of $16,000 made by the AIAI was
matched dollar for dollar by an anonymous
donor, which resulted in a total donation of
$32,000 to the Starship Foundation.
Mr Jairam then went through the Performance
Report highlighting the reasons behind some of
the selected major revenues, and outgoings.
“Over the past 3 years, the Charities
reports to be audited by Independent Chartered
Accountants, which despite being an added
cost to the association, provides comfort to
the members of the Association regarding the
integrity of the reported results,” Mr Jairam
mentioned.
Present at the AGM was Mr Bhavin
Sanghavi from the audit firm UHY Haines
Norton. Mr Sanghavi reviewed the audit report
and explained why the reports bore a qualified
opinion. This qualified opinion is common for a
significant portion of Charities in New Zealand.
The AIAI also invested in a completely new
set of gas cookers replacing the old ones which
were being used since the inception of the
Mahatma Gandhi centre.
The costs of the AIAI are kept to a minimum
as all the labour in the kitchen and the support of
all other functions such as Navratri and Temple
functions are provided by dedicated volunteers.
The Chairman of the Board Dhansukhbhai
Lal expressed his sincere condolences to the
families of the victims of Christchurch mosque
attacks. Mr Lal also expressed his sincere thanks
to all Board of Trustees for their commitment
throughout the year.
“I am very pleased with the Board’s
performance over the last twelve months,” Mr
Lal said.
The meeting also elected three new Life
members and seven new Merit Certificate
holders.

tournament by Young Punjabi Sports Club,
Takanini.
The tournament had five knockout matches

March 23 to honour the victims of Christchurch

all faiths and walks of life came together to

tragedy had brought all the people of New
Zealand together in shared grief. The service
closed with a silent prayer lead by the central
missionary of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community,
Imam Shafique ur Rehman, for everyone
affected by the tragic events.
After the memorial, the attendees had an
opportunity to meet with the members of the
Ahmadiyya Muslim community and were
also given a guided tour of the mosque with a
brief introduction to the salient features of the
Islamic faith.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is a
dynamic, fast-growing international revival
movement within Islam. Founded in 1889 by
Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908)
in Punjab, India, the Ahmadiyya Muslim
Community spans over 210 countries with
membership exceeding tens of millions. Its
motto of ‘Love for all, hatred for none’ is
evidenced through the peaceful actions of
its millions of followers. The New Zealand
branch of this community was established in
1987. It is a registered charitable organisation
and endeavours to be an active and integrated

the city’s trees. This week, Auckland Council has
released a strategy to address the challenges facing the
urban forest.
“Auckland’s Urban Ngahere (Forest) Strategy sets
out how we can all contribute to the expansion of our
urban ngahere, address the unequal distribution of
trees across the region and increase the benefits of a
green city,” Auckland Mayor Phil Goff said.
“We recognise that Auckland’s urban ngahere
provides benefits that help our city to function
and thrive.
“We recognise the social, environmental, economic
and cultural benefits; these include enhanced
stormwater management, air pollution removal,
improved water quality, cooling to reduce the urban
heat island effect, and ecological corridors to connect
habitats and improve biodiversity. We know city trees
are essential for promoting health and wellbeing and
are an important element of our cultural heritage,” the

olice on Tuesday, March 26, released the name
of the man who died in the crash last week in
Waikato. He was identified as 27-year-old
Auckland based IT Technician Neeraj Sharma.
The 27-year-old died in a horrific crash when his car
collided with an oncoming truck in Waikato.
Mr Sharma worked as an IT Technician at a hotel on
Auckland’s Waterfront that had a branch in Taupo too.
Mr Kumar had often travelled to Taupo for work.
Mr Sharma was returning from Taupo on Wednesday,
March 20 when his car crashed against a truck at around
11:35 a.m.
“Police received a report of a crash between a truck
and a car at the intersection of State Highway 27 and
Diagonal Road in the Matamata-Piako District,” Police
media release confirmed.
Mr Sharma was taken to Waikato Hospital by
helicopter in a critical condition.
As per Mr Sharma’s cousin, Ashwini Kumar who
lives in New Plymouth, Mr Sharma came from a town
Yamunanagar in the state of Haryana, North India. He
had come to New Zealand seven years ago as a student
and was on work visa working for the company in
Auckland and sometimes in Taupo.

According to Mr Kumar, Mr Sharma failed to stop
his car at a T-Point intersection where he was hit by
an oncoming truck. The driver of the truck and other
vehicles were able to get Mr Sharma out of his car and
called 111 for emergency services.
Mr Sharma suffered a severe blow to his head and
damaged his brain and veins. Taken in a critical condition
to Waikato Hospital, Mr Sharma slipped into a coma and
later on the evening of Friday, March 22 passed away at
the hospital.

with a mass request that echoed the love
and respect for Mr Kohli.

Commission saying “when your issues
are resolved, our work is done.”
“Thank you for helping us help you,
and I thank you for allowing us to serve
you and do our duty perfectly,” Mr Kohli
concluded.

New Zealand has been grieving since that day.
Grieving for those families who have lost loved ones,
and grieving for the loss of our innocence.
But we’re now reaching a point where questions
need to be answered. Could we have prevented the
attack, and what can we do to ensure New Zealanders
are kept safe?
National supports the Government’s decision to
hold a Royal Commission of Inquiry into our security
and intelligence agencies, as well as into the Police,
Customs and Immigration.
A Royal Commission is our highest level of inquiry.
Given 50 people lost their lives, it’s important we
ensure the events that occurred on 15 March, and
those leading up to it, be investigated independently
and thoroughly.
The inquiry will need to ask hard questions about
whether our security and intelligence agencies had
their focus in the right places.
While holding an inquiry is appropriate, it must not
be used as an excuse to ignore immediate concerns
about our security and intelligence systems.
The reality is our security risk is now higher. That’s
not to alarm anyone but the Government needs to
answer questions about whether our security and
intelligence agencies have the capability to detect
want to keep up with other countries and terrorist
organisations, and be serious about preventing further
attacks.
In 2013 the Government of the day made the
decision to abandon Project Speargun which would
have scanned internet traffic coming into New
Zealand and given an extended degree of protection
to all New Zealanders. Similar systems are used in
other countries.
We currently have CORTEX as part of our
cyber-security systems, which is much narrower
and is designed to protect organisations of national
significance, rather than individuals.
It’s never easy to balance the rights of privacy
against security but where we draw the line must now
be reconsidered.
We believe there should be action now into whether
the capabilities of our security and intelligence
services are fit for purpose.
Those carrying out these roles need to be able to
tell us frankly whether they have the ability to protect
New Zealanders at home and overseas as we expect
them to.
An inquiry cannot be an excuse by the Government
not to answer questions in the meantime. New
Zealanders need to be safe and cannot wait for the
completion of a Royal Commission of inquiry, which
will likely take years.
We cannot allow another attack like March 15
occur because we didn’t do enough now. We need to
get on with actions for the future.

Wellington Indian community plans

centenary commemoration of historic
Jallianwala Bagh massacre

he Indian community of
Wellington is coming
together on Friday, April 12,
at St Peter’s Church, to celebrate the
centenary celebrations of the historic
Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
The incident of Jallianwala Bagh
Massacre is deeply entrenched in the
annals of history of India’s struggle
for freedom from British colonial
rule in the early twentieth century
and continues to remain alive in
the minds and hearts of the wider
Indian community all around the
world and inspiring generations after
generations to appreciate the cost of
their forefathers have paid for the
nation’s independence.
On April 13, 1919, the day of the
traditional festival of Baisakhi, more
than 10,000 people had gathered in
a local mela ground to peacefully
protest against an oppressive
Rowlatt Act, brought by the British
government to curb civil liberties
during the First World War.
In a shocking, and an extremely
cowardly and atrocious move,
General Dyer, the military
commander responsible for security
ordered indiscriminate firing on
an unarmed crowd of peaceful
protestors, killing thousands of
innocent men, women and children,
and leaving a permanent scar in the
minds and hearts of the communities.
Since then Indian communities
all around the world celebrate
Jallianwala Bagh anniversary to
inspire generations of people about
the extremely high price paid by their
forefathers and freedom fighters in
securing the freedom for the nation.
Speaking to the Indian Weekender,
the event said, “Communities will
be coming together to observe
the centenary of the Jallianwala
Bagh Massacre with an Interfaith
ceremony on Friday April 12, at
St Peter’s Church on Willis Street,
Wellington.”
“The Centenary is being observed
here in Wellington to remember part
of our history and to honour all those
who died on that fateful day.”
“It is also an opportunity to educate
the public, who may not be aware of
the sacrifices that have been made
by our forefathers. This could serve
as a lesson as not to commit such
atrocities and to speak- up against
such atrocities that we abhor.
“This is an unfortunate and sad
part of our history but one which,
albeit retrospectively, allows us the
opportunity to come to terms with
through atonement and acceptance
by shedding the grudge and bad
feelings
“By taking lessons from this
aspect of our history, we can further
contribute to an inclusive society and
coexist peacefully in New Zealand,”
Mr Grewal said.

This is a free event, and all are
welcome. There will be a short
reception after the event.
The event is being organised by
Wellington Indian Community, with
the support and blessing of the High
Commission of India on behalf of
the India, Pakistan and Bangladesh
communities of Wellington. The
tragedy occurred before India was
partitioned into three nations.
The Wellington Indian Community
is working to have a photo exhibition
on the Massacre in mid-August.

The Massacre

of Baisakhi and to attend a protest
planned for the late afternoon of
that day. Many had come from
outside Amritsar the night before
to celebrate Baisakhi at the Golden
Temple on the morning of April 13.
In addition to the pilgrims, many had
come to Amritsar to attend the Horse
and Cattle Fair which coincides with
Baisakhi. After the morning prayers
at the Golden Temple, many of the
pilgrims began moving towards the
Jallianwala Bagh which is within a
few hundred meters of the Golden
Temple.
Fearing insurrection, the British
Administration of Punjab imposed
martial law in Amritsar on the
morning of April 13. Anyone entering
or leaving Amritsar was required
to have a pass and gatherings of 4
or more people and all processions
to proceed to Jallianwala Bagh and
the Horse and Cattle Fair which
continued till about 2pm. Once the
Fair was closed many proceeded
to the Park to attend the scheduled
protest meeting.
Around 4.30 the Acting Military
Commander of Amritsar, Brigadier
General Reginald Dyer arrived with
a troop of 50 soldiers, 2 armoured
vehicles and without warning to
disperse, opened fire on the crowd.
Initially, the troops fired into the
air, but General Dyer ordered them
to fire into the densest part of the
crowd. The firing went on for about
10 minutes until all the rounds of
ammunition were exhausted. As the
park was (and still is) walled in all
sides, and the only open entrances
were occupied by the troops, the
protestors had no place to flee. Many
jumped into a well with the hope to
escape the bullets.
It is estimated more than a
thousand people were killed and
about 1500 injured from the 1650

rime Minister Jacinda Ardern on
Saturday, March 23, visited the Masjid
Umar in Mt Roskill, Auckland and met
the members of the Muslim community there.
The remembrance meeting was held to
acknowledge the work of the entire community
including NZ government, and NZ Police in
bringing assurance, safety and peace back
into the community after the vile Christchurch
mosque attacks.
The mass shooting at two mosques in
Christchurch on Friday, March 15, took the
lives of 50 individuals including men, women
and children and injured another 48 people who
suffered moderate to critical injuries, some of
them are still fighting for their lives in hospital.
The attack that uprooted hundreds of families
and put a permanent scar in the memories of
New Zealand was taken with a sense of profound
grief not just by the Muslim community but
also by different communities in New Zealand.
People across the nation came out in thousands
at separate candle vigils and solidarity meetings
condemning the act of violence as ‘an evil act
of terror’.
Over one thousand men, women and children
from the Muslim community turned up at the
afternoon event at the mosque on Saturday
along with Auckland Mayor Phil Goff, MP for
Mt Roskill Michael Wood, National List MPs
Melissa Lee and Dr Parmjeet Parmar.
The Prime Minister was welcomed by the
Chairman of the mosque Ahmed Bhamji and
Imam Mohammed Patel. Mr Bhamji, who lost
his brother-in-law Imam Musa Patel in the
attack lauded the efforts of the Prime Minister
Jacinda Ardern for bringing the nation together
at this hour of grief.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, clad in
a hijab met the community with an Islamic
greeting ‘Assalam Alaikum’, followed by a
quote by Prophet Mohammad and expressed
its doors to the community.
She lauded the Muslim community for
opening their doors and showing hospitality and
sharing peace and love with fellow community
members.
“At a time when it would have been
completely justifiable to close the doors and
lock the gates, you did the exact opposite, and
on behalf of New Zealand, we thank you for
that,” PM Jacinda Ardern said at the event.
“You are the reflection of who we are,” she
further added.
Mr Bhamji welcomed the Prime Minister and
other dignitaries to the event and choked as he
offered his speech, thanking the community
for their untiring support towards the Muslim
community and the mosques across the country.
“We are forever grateful the day that our
hearts were broken, you looked straight at us ...
and spoke to us in a way that restored our hearts,
restored our faith and restored our community,”
Mr Bhamji said acknowledging the efforts of
the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern for showing
her solidarity towards the Muslim community.
“I am from Fiji, I am a migrant but seeing the
love of the community today I felt like a New
Zealander,” Mr Bhamji further added.

undergone open heart surgery. Mr
Chinnasamy did not regain consciousness
post surgery at Dunedin Public Hospital
and died on Sunday, March 24 due to
multiple organ failure.
The family already trying to deal with
the loss of their father are now facing a
massive amount of bills owing to the
hospital for the surgery. The total bills
have accumulated to over $100,000
and topped by another $15,000 for
body repatriation.
In the excitement of welcoming a new
member to the family, Mr Murugan’s
parents travelled without insurance to
hospital bills for the family
that they have to pay.

minimum wage increases by
$1.20 an hour. On a 40-hour
work week, this means an extra
$48 a week before tax. This will
make a real difference to low-

US$3 million project on enhancing
protection and empowerment of
migrants and communities affected
by climate change and disasters in the Pacific
region was launched today in Suva.
Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says
that there is a need to deal with climate change
in a holistic manner and the talks on relocation
needs urgent addressing.
Sayed-Khaiyum says that so far three
villagers have been moved to three different

that this poses different issues and challenges to

Christchurch terror attack: Has the world finally
found a leader in Jacinda Ardern to counter
global rightwing populism?
P
rime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s
astonishingly flawless response
to Christchurch terror attacks has
instantaneously made her an international
star, with many pinning hopes on her to lead
the charge against rising global rightwing
populism.
Indeed, the world has been experiencing -
much to the discomfort of many, particularly
liberal-intellectual academia - the steady rise
of global right-wing populism in recent years.
Till around late last year right-wing populist
and nationalist governments were in power in
countries as big and diverse as Russia, Turkey,
Israel, Hungary, Poland, India, and the United
States (US) - with the rise of President Donald
Trump in the US being portrayed as the
single most significant source of concern and
disappointment in the global western media.
Such has been the dissatisfaction in the
mainstream media of these respective nations
reeling under the surge right-wing populism
that they have been pinning their hopes on any
possible liberal-leadership around the world.
Our PM Jacinda Ardern has long been
clubbed in the new generation of the global
left-wing liberal leaders along with Justin
Trudeau and Jeremy Corbyn, who offered
hope to many disillusioned by the unabated
rise of global rightwing politics.
However, none would have anticipated that
Jacinda Ardern’s empathetic response to “an
act of grave-violence” that has now become
etched in public memory as the darkest phase
of New Zealand history, would catapult her far
ahead of any of her peers, in left-wing global
leaders who can show light to the world.
The favourable commentary that Ms
Ardern’s views on terrorism, the perils of
Islamophobia, challenges of immigration and
integration, dealing with alt-right extremist
ideologies – in one way or the other – in the
global western media is nothing but exemplary.
However, it might not be an exaggeration
to say that this could, in part, be a reflection
of western media’s disappointment with their
own domestic rightwing populist political
environment, which seems to be stifling the
very basis of their mutually shared “liberal-
thinking.”
To some extent, this might explain why
western media is so keen to project Jacinda
Ardern – a leader from a seeming remote
South Pacific country which has seldom
struggled to find legitimate representation
within the world maps – as the new hope of
leftwing liberal populism. They have seen in
Jacinda – a leadership style so neatly coated
with the ideologies of egalitarianism, morality
and righteousness – that they so badly want
to be imitated and reflected in their respective
politics. This leadership style is perfectly fine
for us in New Zealand – a nation so badly
shaken by this horrendous act of violence – at
this moment where it that could potentially
threaten to disturb the delicate balance of
peace, unity and multiculturalism.
However, will this leadership-style alone
will be able to counter the surging global right-
wing populism around the world in the near
future, still remains to be seen, and at best is
wishful thinking.
One of the major reasons of this pessimism
is that this resurgent leftwing liberal populism
is focussed more on addressing or attacking
the so-called “leaders” of the global rightwing
populism, than actually addressing the core
issues which led to their rise at the first place.
Ms Ardern dealt directly with President
Trump when offered with an opportunity
to advise him to extend compassion to all
Muslims and Islamic communities.
Similarly, in countries like India, the now
resurgent leftwing liberal populist leaders,
who are trying to win back lost ground are
focusing more on launching personal attacks
on Prime Minister Narendra Modi – in the
hope that their direct full-blown frontal attacks
will weaken him and shrink his support-base.
Like in Jacinda’s case (as a part of global

effort), these domestic efforts in individual
countries like India, are more wishful thinking,
and less a tangible long-term solution.
Because, in both these examples, the so-
called leftwing liberal populist leadership, are
failing to acknowledge the real ‘social anxiety’
that has propelled the right-wing populist
leaders at the first place.
There seems to be a convenient and
deliberate ignorance of the fact that the
rightwing populism and there seemingly
divisive, but extremely popular leaders are
a product of the ‘long-unaddressed social
anxiety’ that was created at first place by the
so-called left-wing liberal populism.
To make it worse, these leaders largely,
have risen to power after being democratically
elected, thus signalling the fact that a vast mass
of humanity has been quietly reeling under the
social anxiety that seems to emanate from the
so-called hyperbole left-wing populism.
Two examples worth mentioning here!
Firstly, recently there was news in
mainstream media that Muslim group wanted
$2 million donations to be returned to China
for their concerns on the persecution of
Muslim Uighurs in North-West China.
Undoubtedly China's treatment of the
Muslim Uighurs has concerned human rights
watchers.
Understandably, the desired intention of
these Muslim humanitarian groups in rejecting
Chinese money is of countering the growing
monster of Islamophobia all around the world,
by expressing their solidarity with Muslim
Uighurs, especially in today’s compassionate
environment.
To many, this could be a tricky assertion, as
first, it refuses to offer any love and compassion
to the Chinese diasporic community, while
expecting the same for all fellow migrants and
Muslim communities during these difficult
times. On top of that, by taking this seemingly
humanitarian stand, our local Muslim
community groups have innocuously affirmed
Islam’s pan-global identity – which to many
ordinary people is a source of social anxiety.
Make no mistake; there is no intention to
delve into the profoundly complex issues of
Islamophobia in this piece, and not to condone
any form of hatred or prejudice against the
Islamic religion or Muslims.
Instead, the intention is to expose the
seeming fickleness in now resurgent leftwing
liberal populism, which is once again failing
to acknowledge kind of social anxieties that

The exact definition of Islamophobia
continues to be discussed with different
academics offering different explanations,
and the likes of academics S. Sayyid and
Abdoolkarim Vakil maintain that Islamophobia
is a response to the emergence of a distinct
Muslim public identity globally.
The Muslim group’s response to reject
Chinese donations for the victims of
Christchurch terror attack goes a long way in
accentuating to the social anxiety around the
emergence of a global Muslim public identity.
More so when the current Chinese
government is under the grips of right-wing
populism (Chinese President Xi Jinping
has risen to power on the rightwing populist
themes) – the anxieties are likely to persist and
linger – much to the dislike of the hopeful of a
quick defeat anytime soon.
Indeed, the challenges are complex, and
Islamophobia is one of the major challenges of
our generations that surely need to be defeated
and dusted, on which global rightwing
populism seems to thrive upon.
However, the leftwing liberal populism
will also need to acknowledge the fact they
need to amend its ways in which it fails to
acknowledge the social, religious, ethnic
diversity and divisions within our world.
Indeed, the road ahead is a long and arduous
one, with no easy victory in sight – not as easy
as being conceived by the current wave of the
liberal intellectual intelligentsia.

Future of 'Mahagathbandhan' and
emerging trajectories of 2019 polls
I
ndian politics is always moving along new,
emerging trajectories.
After 20 years of the Congress
dominating electoral politics, it was perhaps
in 1967 that for the first time the party faced
a setback. In 1977, there was another strong
anti-Congress mood prevailing in the country
following the Emergency.
But then, Indira Gandhi once again
returned to power with a solid majority, partly
due to the Morari-Charan Singh coalition
experiment flopping.
After Indira Gandhi's sudden death, Rajiv
Gandhi received a massive victory and from
1989 Indian politics entered, perhaps, its most
dynamic phase. A coalition dharma continued
until Narendra Modi's electoral victory in 2014.
I recall a particularly interesting anecdote
from 1989.
V.P. Singh had told both the communists
and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that they
needed to run the country collectively for a
period of five years.
He argued that there shouldn't be any open
quarrel, that any differences which could and
most likely come up needed to be dealt with.
To cement this, he instituted a practice of a
weekly dinner. But even then, the differences
were plain to see.
At the dinner, with the Prime Minister
playing host and the Left parties and the BJP
- who supported his government - joining in,
there would be two separate sections.
One had vegetarian dishes and the other non
vegetarian dishes.
Veteran BJP leader L.K. Advani would queue
up with his plate on the vegetarian side while
the late Left leader Somnath Chatterjee would
be on the other side.
V.P. Singh would stand in the centre
- a centrist leader trying to keep his two
disparate allies together. We all know what
happened next - the differences that emerged
over the Mandal-Kamandal politics that
defined politics.
In 2019, once again, we are seeing the
resurgence of coalition politics. Prime
Minister Narendra Modi has ridiculed
the 'mahagathbandhan' as an instance of
'mahamilawat', with the opposition parties
arguing that the Modi government has failed
to fulfil the different regional aspirations of
the country.
The government is autocratic, does not
believe in the voice of democracy and is
a 'threat to federalism' are hashtags of the
opposition campaign.
The debate over federalism in the country
is inevitably linked to the concept of coalition
dharma in Indian politics. But, as we stand
today in 2019, where does that coalition lie,
what is the actual scene, the 'zamini hakikat'
or ground reality.Take the instance of Delhi's
Arvind Kejriwal and his attempts at forging ties
with Rahul Gandhi and the Congress in Delhi.
It is a bad cocktail. Many in the Congress
party's Delhi unit remain pathologically anti-
AAP, arguing that a short-term alliance with
the party that dethroned them in Delhi would
pose a long-term existential threat in the state
for them.
Let's take another example. In Uttar Pradesh,
neither Mayawati nor Akhilesh Yadav have
reacted well to Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi
Vadra's political overtures.
Even within the Samajwadi Party, there
remain divisions. Mulayam Singh Yadav, his
wife and daughter-in-law are actively working
against Akhilesh, said party leaders.
In West Bengal, the Congress and the Left
alliance has crashed before it could start. West

Bengal's senior Congress leader Abdul Mannan
tried a lot to make this happen.
But ultimately, the personal chemistry
between Mamata Banerjee and Rahul Gandhi
is not at its best. Banerjee was never keen on an
alliance with the Congress because she knows
that in Bengal, the grand old party is in a state
of decay.
Eventually, the BJP will become the
main opposition. But right now, the
Trinamool's domination, on the basis
of Banerjee's brand equity in the state,
is undeniable.
She has virtually become the Congress in
the state, taking up the space that they once
occupied. She remains that rare leader who left
the Congress and managed to take the entire
vote share with her.
She knows that if her party was to align with
the Congress, it would be the Congress that
would benefit more in the state than the other
way around.
In Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu
is in a more deplorable position. Y.S. Jagan
Mohan Reddy has become a serious threat to
the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and, as a result,
Chandrababu had to forge an alliance with the
Congress to try and portray Reddy as an agent
of the BJP.
For him, the strategy is perfect - but Banerjee
remains more confident of her position so chose
not to go into a pre-poll alliance. But does
having Naidu on his side help Rahul Gandhi?
In Telangana, he remains the main khalnayak
since he was opposed to the formation of a
separate state.
One senior Congress leader admitted that
the leader had become a "gale ka haddi" (bone
stuck in throat) for the Congress.
Similarly in Maharashtra, the Congress-
Nationalist Congress Party relations
have not been the best. Sharad Pawar has
never, personally, been a trusted leader for
the Congress.
The problem, historically for the Congress,
is that they are not a very ally-friendly party. In
fact, the Congress style still has a 'zamindari'
mindset, a feudal attitude that is as deeply
rooted to their party as its history itself.
Earlier, the Congress working committee
meetings would take place with leaders
sitting on mattresses on the floor, white
sheets pulled over them. It was a tradition
that started from the earlier days of the
Congress in Anand Bhawan in Allahabad.
The building is now a museum, with the room
where the meetings were held memorialized,
complete with the mattresses and the
white sheets.
Rahul Gandhi has tried to bring about
changes. Now, the Sonia-Rahul-led Congress
Working Committee meetings are held in
a corporate style. But this is just a change in
form, an exterior change that failed to address
the underlying issues.
Can the Congress completely rework its
zamindari DNA? When Rahul Gandhi took
over the CWC, he also tried to go it alone. His
goal was independent growth of the party. Why
should the Congress presuppose coalitions?
As a result, the formula for him was one of
ekla chalo.
The Congress meet at Pachmarhi was where
the seeds of the coalition were planted and then
under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi a roadmap
was drawn out during the Shimla Summit.
This yielded the party dividends then, but
today the Congress has to reconsider. This
coalition can only come through federalism,
keeping the regional, so-called secular forces
with Rahul Gandhi.
Recently, in the Karnataka Assembly
elections, the Congress managed to remove
the BJP government only by giving up the
driver's seat to HD Deve Gowda's son, HD
Kumaraswamy. But, that was a state election.
Ultimately, at the national level, in order to
combat Modi, a more serious face is needed and
the grand alliance still remains in a shambles.
There is growing discontent among regional
parties and secular left-liberal intellectuals

against him and the main complaint is that, so
far, the interpersonal relations required to make
such a coalition work has not been seen.
Sonia Gandhi had once famously walked to
Ram Vilas Paswan's house from her own at 10,
Janpath to forge an alliance.
True, this was optics for the media. But, even
then it was a strong message of her willingness.
But, this is something that Rahul Gandhi
cannot do.
I do not want to pin the blame solely on him.
Regional parties also have to take a share of the
blame. Take Mayawati, for instance.
Why is she so dead set against the Congress?
Advani had told me a very interesting story
years ago.
When, for the first time, the BJP made an
alliance with the BSP and the latter rejected the
Congress proposal - it was the late Kanshi Ram
who forged the alliance with Advani. Kanshi
Ram told Advani: "I have told Mayawati, in
the future when I am not there, never go with
the Congress.
There should be no direct alliance."
Why? The reason that Kanshi Ram had
explained to Advani was that the Dalit vote
had originally been the Congress vote. It was
Gandhi who used the term Harijan and it was
only much later that the Dalit vote emerged
as a force that demanded its own separate
representation. Simply put, an alliance with the
Congress could mean that this vote returns to
the fold.
Political scientist Rajni Kothari had once said
in Indian politics it was the Congress system:
a one-party dominant (Congress), multi-party
system.
Congress was the platform where all
religions, all castes, all regional aspirations and
all languages would vote. But as the leadership
grew increasingly alienated from the masses,
it was the end of innocence. Regional parties
grew, and the BJP became a national party.
For India, there have been Morarji
Desai, Chandrababu Naidu, V.P. Singh,
Chandrashekhar, Deve Gowda and I.K. Gujral.
So, the country has experienced a coalition
government. But the reality is that the Congress
is weak today and railway bogies cannot run
the engine. The fate of the ‘Mahagathbandhan’
remains shrouded in pessimism.

of her assets having increased by a whopping
Rs 34.46 crore in the last five years, discloses an
affidavit filed by her with the poll panel.
The affidavit shows Hema Malini presently owns
total wealth including bungalows, jewelleries,
cash, jewelleries, shares and term deposits worth
over Rs 101 crore, while five years ago before the
2014 general elections, her total assets had been
valued at nearly Rs 66 crore.
The value of her actor-husband Dharmendra
Singh Deol’s assets grew to Rs 12.30 crore
during the corresponding period, according to
Hema Malini’s affidavit, detailing her assets and
liabilities along with those of her spouse.
The affidavit was submitted by her to the
Election Commission of India while filing her
nomination as Lok Sabha candidate from the
Mathura parliamentary constituency.
The affidavit, accompanied by her income tax
returns for the last five years, reveals that the
couple earned Rs 10 crore each during the last five
years. In her IT returns, Hema Malini has shown an
income of Rs 15.93 lakh in 2013-14 against that of
over Rs 1.19 crore in 2017-18.
The affidavit shows her income to be Rs 3.12
crore in 2014-15, Rs 1.19 crore in 2015-16 and Rs
4.30 crore in 2016-17.
Thus, as per the affidavit, the yester years’
‘Dream Girl’ earned over Rs 9.87 crore, and her
‘he-man’ husband nearly Rs 9.73 crore in last five
years. The affidavit disclosed that Hema Malini
has two cars, including a Mercedes bought for Rs
33.62 lakh in 2011.
The other car is a Toyota that, she said, she
bought for Rs 4.75 lakh in 2005.
The details of Dharmendra’s assets in the
affidavit indicate his passion for ‘vintage’ cars.
That may be the reason why he has not disposed
his Range Rover car bought just for Rs 7,000 in
1965. His other old vehicles include a Maruti 800
car and a motorcycle.
Counted among the country’s billionaires along
with his wife, Dharmenda total asset has been
valued at over Rs 123.85 crore (Rs 1.23 bn).
Among their liabilities detailed in the affidavit,
Hema Malini has a debt of over Rs 6.75 crore while
her husband has a debt of over Rs 7.37 crore.
A significant part of their debt included a loan
taken to build their bungalow in Juhu Vile Parle
in Mumbai.
They have also been benefitted from their
investment in this property. Bought and built at a
sum of Rs 58 crore, the value of the Juhu land and
the bungalow is now worth over Rs 100 crore.
As per the details of her educational qualifications
in the affidavit, Hema Malini, had to leave her
formal education at an age of nine for the sake of
her dance training, but she did her matriculation
later besides completing her higher studies.
She got a PhD degree in 2012 from Padampati
Singhania University at Udaipur.

coordinated inauthentic behaviour. Kashmir was the subject of some of
the content shared by this network, but it should not have been included in
that list. We have corrected this in the blog post and we apologise for any

philanthropist from Kerala, is the fourth richest
UAE expat with assets worth USD 2.4 billion. He
ranks 962 on the list.
Varkey is the founder and chairman of the global
advisory and educational management firm GEMS
Education, which has a network of over 130
schools in over a dozen countries.
PNC Menon, an Omani property developer
hailing from Thrissur in Kerala, also made it to the
list with assets worth USD 1.1 billion. He ranks at
1,941 in the overall list.

Jama Masjid
T
he Masjid-i Jahan-Numa, commonly
known as the Jama Masjid of Delhi,
is one of the largest mosques in India.
It was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan
between 1644 and 1656 at a cost of 1 million
rupees and was inaugurated by an imam from
Bukhara, present-day Uzbekistan. The mosque
was completed in 1656 AD with three great
gates, four towers and two 40 m high minarets
constructed of strips of red sandstone and
white marble. The courtyard can accommodate
more than 25,000 persons. There are three
domes on the terrace which are surrounded by
the two minarets. On the floor, a total of 899
black borders are marked for worshippers. The
architectural plan of Badshahi Masjid, built
by Shah Jahan’s son Aurangzeb at Lahore,
Pakistan, is similar to the Jama Masjid.
Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah
Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah is the dargah
(mausoleum) of one of the world’s most famous
Sufi saints, Hazrat Khwaja Syed Nizamuddin
Auliya (1238 - 1325 CE). Situated in the Hazrat
Nizamuddin West area of Delhi, the dargah is
visited by thousands of Muslims every week,
and sees a fair share of Hindus, Christians
and people from other religions. The tombs of
poet Hazrat Amir Khusro and Mughal princess
Jehan Ara Begum are also located within the
Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah complex, and
Inayat Khan’s tomb is just around the corner.
Qawwali sessions are held every Thursday
after Maghrib prayer i.e. sunset time namaz/

in India, and it is one of the largest masajids
in India. Makkah Masjid is a listed heritage
building in the old city of Hyderabad, close to
the historic landmarks of Chowmahalla Palace,
Laad Bazaar, and Charminar. Muhammad Quli
Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi
dynasty, commissioned bricks to be made from
the soil brought from Mecca, the holiest site
of Islam, and used them in the construction
of the central arch of the mosque, thus giving
the mosque its name. It formed the centerpiece
around which the city was planned by
Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah. Makkah Masjid
was built during the reign of Muhammad
Quli Qutb Shah, the 5th Qutb Shahi Sultan of
Golconda (now Hyderabad). The three arched
facades have been carved from a single piece of
granite, which took five years to quarry. More
than 8,000 workers were employed to build the
mosque.
Jamia Masjid
Jamia Masjid is a mosque in Srinagar,
Jammu & Kashmir, India. The Jamia Masjid of
Srinagar is situated at Nowhatta in the middle
of the Old City. It was built by sultan Sikandar
Shah Kashmiri Shahmiri in 1394 AD. under
the order of Mir Mohmmad Hamadani, son of
Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani. Sultan Sikhandar’s
son Zain-ul-abidin extended the Jama Masjid
by including turret. It has similarities Buddhist
pagodas and is constructed in Persian style.
Hazratbal Mosque
The Hazratbal Shrine is a Muslim shrine
in Hazratbal, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir,
India. It contains a relic, the Moi-e-Muqqadas,
believed by many Muslims of Kashmir to be
a hair of Muhammad. The name of the shrine
comes from the Urdu word Hazrat, meaning
“respected”, and the Kashmiri word bal,
meaning “place”. Thus it means the place
which is given high regards and is respected
among the people. The shrine is situated on
the left bank of the Dal Lake, Srinagar and is
considered to be Kashmir’s holiest Muslim
shrine. According to legend, the relic was first
brought to India by Syed Abdullah, a purported

mixture until the raw smell disappears.
• Now, add turmeric powder, red chili powder and
coriander powder to the spice mixture and mix

• Add the mashed tomatoes and mix it well with

• Make sure the tomatoes turn pulpy and cook this
mix until oil separates from the masala in the pan.

(TB) bacterium from hijacking
immune cells and allow the body to
control infection better, say researchers who
found that the common pain killer could treat
the top infectious killer worldwide that claims
around 4,400 lives a day.
Researchers from the Centenary Institute in
Sydney found that the TB bacterium hijacks
platelets from the body's blood clotting system
to weaken immune systems.
"Our study provides more crucial evidence
that widely available aspirin could be used to
treat patients with severe TB infection and save
lives," said lead author Elinor Hortle, research
officer at Centenary.
Using the zebrafish model of TB, the team
used fluorescent microscopy to observe the
build-up of clots and activation of platelets
around sites of infection.
They found that the platelets were being
tricked by the infection into getting in the way
of the body's immune system.
Treating the infections with anti-platelet
drugs, including the widely available aspirin,
the researchers said, could prevent hijacking
and allow the body to control infection better,
according to the paper published in The Journal
of Infectious Diseases.
"This is the first time that platelets have been
found to worsen TB in an animal model. It
opens up the possibility that anti-platelet drugs
could be used to help the immune system fight
off drug resistant TB," Hortle said.
According to the World Health Organization,
TB is one of the top 10 causes of death
worldwide.
In 2017, 10 million people fell ill with TB,
and 1.6 million died from the disease (including
0.3 million among people with HIV).
The infection also accounted for death in
230,000 children (including children with HIV
associated TB) in 2017.
India has the world's highest burden of TB,
with 27 per cent of all global cases and over 30
per cent of all deaths worldwide.

at the brains of 58 deceased people who were aged between 43
and 97 and focussed on the hippocampus -- a part of the brain

They were able to spot immature or "new" neurons in the
brains that they examined, the BBC reported.

of amyloid beta (a hallmark of Alzheimer's) and probably before
symptoms, it's very early."
Understanding why there is a decrease in neurogenesis could
lead to new treatments in both Alzheimer's and normal ageing,
Llorens-Martin said.
"While we start losing nerve cells in early adulthood, this
research shows that we can continue to produce new ones even
into our 90s," said Rosa Sancho, from the Alzheimer's Research
UK. "Alzheimer's radically accelerates the rate at which we lose
nerve cells and this research provides convincing evidence that
it also limits the creation of new nerve cells."

CPSC is back for the second time with a bigger
and better Kabaddi event with over 60 players
participating countrywide including International
players, along with live cultural performances,
business stalls, food stalls and plenty of engaging
activities for children.
Kabaddi is contact team sport played between
two teams of seven players. Originated in Tamil
Naidu (India) its an international sport played in
various countries – India, Bangladesh, Japan,
Maldives, Iran, Canada, Thailand and England
to name a few. The object of the game is for a
single player on offence to run into the opposing
team’s court, tag as many defenders as possible,
and return to their own court—all without being
tackled by the defenders.
