Writing Assessment #3

Technology has progressed throughout history, and it has led this society to many

successful advancements. Humans have developed the light bulb, the windmills, and the internet.

All these developments contributed to today’s society by creating cars, machines that can operate

in hospitals, and search engines such as google. One of many ideas that surged was the

navigation application that people now use in order to travel that was suggested from a peer in

class named Carter. The first map was present on Babylonian clay tablets during 2300 B.C (Brief

History of Maps and Cartography). Today’s map is available through electronical devices that

have applications (apps) that are contributed by: Google, Yahoo, Apple, and many more

corporations. Carter argued that today’s technological navigation is an effective tool to have in

our life because technology used it in map applications is an affective advancement because it

allows us to navigate easier, it allows for social interactions, and the option to use todays

advancements or older creations.

Particularly, technology used in maps is a great navigational tool because it is simpler.

Back in the day humans had to use big maps that were confusing, and hard to understand (Carter).

The improvement of the map gives many individuals the advantage of having the understanding

of what they are looking at. The electronical form of a map is useful in technology because it gives

individuals who don’t know how to read a map by having a simple guide that communicates the

roots that one must take. In “Smarter Than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds

for the Better”, the author Clive Thompson states, “Second, today’s tools make it easier for us to

find connections-between ideas, pictures, people, bits of news- that were previously invisible”

(450). Technology allows for unlimited tools to improve the navigational app. For instance, it helps

today’s society because people are now using their smart phones for the navigation tool and the

benefit is that they will never get lost unless they lose their navigational app.

Moreover, the advancements of the maps contribute to an effective technological

advancement because it allows our society to meet with other people. Carter said that today’s map

app allows many individuals to get from one place to the other, and this allows for interaction to

meet knew people. Maps are used to travel to find new places and meet new people. Technology

provide this advancement and it is an effective way to use it because it prevents people from getting

lost. The reason why the app is great to have is because it also is an interaction that anyone can

understand because of the language that are offered and the design of the app.

Subsequently, todays maps are a benefiting technological advancement because it does not

take today’s society away from old school map. Old maps are useful because if one wants to take

away from technological advancements one can directly use it effectively. The positive outcome

of having both is everyone can use both in case one does not have the route one needs. Thompson

states, “One of the greatest challenges of today’s digital thinking tools is knowing when not to use

them, when to rely on the powers of the older and slower technologies, like paper and books”

(456). As Thompson stated that today’s society has the advantage of picking. When technology

has the benefit of using both electrical and manual map it is always a winning situation.

Technology is a powerful tool that has contributed to todays society. As both the author

Thompson, and Carter stated that technology provides a simple tool to navigate, it allows for social

interaction, and the power to choose which advancement one wants to us. This argument is

effective because individuals have the right to choose, and it give two engines. Having option is a

plus to today’s society because it really depends on what the need of an individual is.
