Modikwa’s safety
recognised as the best
“You are not only the best platinum mine in South Africa
when it comes to safety, but your are the best mine in South
Africa with your 7 000 000 fatality free shifts,” was the words
of Ms Renée Joubert of the Mine Health and Safety Council.
She presented Mr Sean O’Connor, Modikwa’s Business
Leader with a trophy and a certificate for the mine’s
achievement of 7 000 000 fatality free shifts in September this
year.
The function took place on Tuesday and dignitaries included
Anglo Platinum CEO, Mr Neville Nicolau and Mr André
Wilkens, CEO of African Rainbow Minerals. Other guests
included representatives of NUM, UASA, ARM, Anglo
Platinum, DMR, Section 21 Companies, Kgoshi’s and family
members of those employees who sadly passed away in mine
accidents.
Before celebrating, the mine gave recognition to those
employees who had died in the line of duty, assuring their
families that their deaths were not in vein and that the
corrective safety measures were very important to the
achievement of no further loss of life. The two CEOs, Mr
Nicolau and Mr Wilkens (photograph top left) laid a wreath at
the commemoration plaque and a minute of silence was
observed.
The function continued with Mr Nicolau, Mr Wilkens, Mr
Elliot Letsoko (Limpopo Region DMR Senior Inspector
Mining), Ms Joubert, Mr Dick van der Westhuizen
(representing the union UASA) and Mr William Mabapa
(representing NUM) and Mr O’Connor each getting a turn to
address the audience.
Apart from congratulations, the speakers all encouraged the
employees to continue working safely according to the Anglo
American Platinum Safety Strategy which is based on three
simple focus points: Zero Mindset; No Repeats and Simple
Standards. Ms Joubert warned that complacency is one of the
biggest threats to safety on the mines.
Mr O’Connor said that ‘auto pilot mode’ was something to
avoid: “If we believe we have achieved superior safety
performance, it is not from doing more of the same each day,
but to see each day with its new challenges and changes as a
new challenge to get through the day without an injury to
anyone. This cannot be achieved in a relaxed automatic mode
but in an extremely alert and continuous awareness of the
potential dangers in the process.
This becomes more difficult as we lengthen the periods
between fatalities, we are challenged with complacency, we
lose our focus, and we slip into our subconscious mode too
easily! This is now our biggest challenge. Neville Nicolau said
it when he joined AngloAmerican Platinum in 2008: “Safety is
our moral license to mine. We cannot allow
people to be injured or killed while working on
our mines.” We believe that we are delivering on
this strong belief and desire to make our mines
safe!” The mine is now aiming at celebrating
five years of fatality free shifts in March 2011
and if they continue their safe standards will
celebrate 8 000 000 fatality free shifts in 36
weeks (June 2011).

South 2 emerges with a bang! On Tuesday, 20 July Modikwa initiated the first blast at the South 2
Shaft portal excavation.
“While the open cast is intended merely as a ‘survival filler’ aimed at
putting ounces through the mill in order to reduce unit costs and
improve profitability, South 2 Shaft is intended to replace South 1
Shaft which will begin with planned downscaling as from 2012,”
explained Mr Gary Strong, Projects Business Area Leader. “The
initiation of the South 2 Shaft Project, is however a bold step in such
testing and uncertain economic times and its continuation will depend
largely on the extent of improved productivity levels at the current
operations.”
South 2 is approximately 4km on road from South 1. Work on the new
Shaft is progressing fast. Workers will start with the first part of the
infrastructure to go underground within a week or two.

Executive mayor of Sekhukhune District
Municipality, Cllr Mogobo David Magabe,
and Greater Tubatse Municipality Mayor,
Ralepane Mamekoa, visited the
communities of Leboeng as part of the
annual mayoral outreach programme last
week Friday..
The purpose of the visit was to interact
with the communities and also to assure
the community that even though they are
at the border of the district, the
municipality still cares about them.
The mayors visited Pitjaneng Primary
School, where he handed over 40 bicycles
to learners who walk more than 10
kilometres to school.
They also visited Mapareng village
where a large number of RDP houses were
left unfinished by the contractor.
Executive Mayor Magabe told residents he
was impressed by the fact that some
community members took the initiative
and finished the houses themselves. “It is
our responsibility as the government to
finish the house, but they did not wait for
us, they met us halfway, that is a very
good initiative.”
He concluded his visit by interacting
with the whole community at Leboeng
Sports Ground. Members of the
community came in numbers to interact
with the Mayor.
Issues like lack water, electricity ,
roads and RDP houses were raised and the
Mayor made an undertaking that they
would try and resolve the basic issues as
soon as possible.
He also undertook to take up issues
with other government departments that
are reponsible for aspects that do not fall
under the auspices of the district and local
government structures.
The communities around Leboeng have
been struggling to get the government’s
attention for a long time and even resorted
to public protests for which they were
arrested. Cases were later withdrawn.

maths and science, and due to the nature of
ASA Metals and Tenova Pyromets business
where they mostly employee technical
people, as well as the current shortage skills
in the technical field, it was decided to
embark on this project and to focus on
improving the level of facilitation by using
technology as a medium.

Mindset was responsible for the training
of the teachers as well as designing the
facilitation material and conducted
professional development training for a total
of twelve teachers from both schools.
Participants from both schools were
delighted to be part of this training as it was
a great opportunity for them to improve on
their day-to-day teaching methodologies.
Furthermore, professional development
and ICT integration into their daily teaching
using the computor, meant that teaching
concepts which involve outside world
activities would be brought to their
doorsteps as well as expand their horizons
by bringing information and ideas which
would traditionally only be left to their
imaginations. Ten computers were also
donated to both schools to enable pupils to
practice on the computer and to enhance
their grades.
At the end of 2009 teachers at Maputla
high school was ecstatic as the matric results
improved dramatically from a mere 38% in
2008 to 62% in 2009. ASA Metals is proud
to be associated with the above intervention
and would like to continuously add value to
the community and decided to continue with
a similar intervention where other schools
such as Nakgwadi Secondary School were
identified.

Local CSF established

The Limpopo department of Safety, Security
and Liaison convened a meeting on Tuesday
this week at the old municipal building in
Burgersfort to establish a Community Safety
Forum (CSF) for the area.
As the concept of CSF’s is formed around
the concept iof a multi-agency, government-
community partnership approach,
stakeholders from various spheres of
government, community policing forums,
business and other non-governmental
organisations representing sectors of the
community and interests attended the
meeting.
Also present were Police representatives of
the Tubatse Cluster, including the cluster
commander, brigadier Ledwaba and her
station commanders.
Local councillor Josias Mahlake chaired
the meeting. It was explained to all those
present that the aim of the national policy
framework for community safety was to promote
the development of a community where citizens
live in a safe and healthy environment and have
access to high quality services at local level
through collaboration between government and
communities.
CSF is a way to develop and implement a
structured multi-agency approach to improve
fafety in the home and in the community,
thereby reducing crime and criminality by
addressing tha causes of crime through
structured partnerships. Th emain functions of
the local CSF will be to provide a local social
crime preventions capacity, develop a local
crime prevention strategy and plan, facilitate
linkages with the municipal IDP and to
oversee, manage and monitor the
implementation of crime prevention
programmes or projects.

Die Tubatse Chrome Festival het verlede week Vrydag

What will happen in the ‘Shark tank’

The ABSA Currie Cup final will take place
in Durban on Saturday.
The Sharks will face Western Province
(WP). Many rugby enthusiasts predict that
it will be a tough game with kicking
playing a major role.
WP will be taking the same squad to the
‘Shark tank’ as the one who beat the Free
State Cheetahs 31-7 two weeks ago.
In the mean time fans have started doing
battle in cyber space. Supporters are
encouraged to join the social networking
site Twitter to try and determine which
side will have the most support. The
Twitter accounts are Just_Sharks or
Just_WP.
Some of the Sharks followers on this site
includes England Test cricketer Kevin
Pietersen, rock group Just Jinjer and FHM
model Charne Jade Slee.
The Western Province followers include:

Modikwa’s soccer team participated in the Mining News Soccer
Tournament hosted at Lonmin Mine.
Modikwa played 4 games. They played agains Koof (Gold
Fields), Amandelbult (Anglo Platinum), Vaalrivier (Gold
Fields), and Harmony (Gold Fields). Modikwa won
Amandelburg 6-0 but lost 1-0 against Vaal rivier and Harmony.
They lost 2-1 against Kloof.The overall performance of
Modikwa soccer team at the tournament was better after
conceding 4 goals and scoring 7 goals throughout the
tournament. “Our team has done well in this year’s mining
soccer tournaments after obtaining 3rd position at the Anglo
Platinum soccer tournament held at Union Platinum mine as
well as their performance at the 2010 mining news games that
was played at Lonmin (Rustenburg ) as compared to previous
years” said Andy Mohloke, sport organiser at Modikwa.
Kgaugelo Phasha was nominated by (PSL) Platinum Stars’
officials at the tournament for a two weeks trial.

Athletes take to
the road
The Eastern Limb Mines Mayor’s
Marathon took place last week Saturday.
The event drew athletes from near and far
with 153 male athletes completing the
21km half marathon race. Athletes from
Kenia and Zimbabwe also featured in the
top finishers of the different categories.
The 21km started at the entrance to
Modikwa Platinum mine and ended with
the 10km race and 5km fun run at
Steelpoort Academy.
The race almost started late as municipal
officials and councillors insisted that the
race be officially started by the executive
mayor, David Magabe of Sekhukhune
District Municipality. Eventually the race
started without the mayor’s presence. He
waited for the athletes at the finishing line.
The 21 km was won by L Masunda running
for Nedbank in a time of 01:26:09. T. Kgosi
was second in a time of 01:07:07 and J.
Wirimai took the third place. His time was
01:07:28.

For the women it was R. Nyahora who
came in first. Her time was 01:21:52. She
ran in the Nedbank colours. Second in was
L. Leballo in a time of 01:27:16 and third
H. Chiundo in 01:28:13.
The 10km race was won by M. Goxo of the
Nedbank Club. His time was 0:37:22.
Second in for the men was J. Molepo. The
third athlete in was T. Phaka.
For the women in the 10km it was P.
Phadu who took the first place. Her time
was 0:49:11. F. Makhutu was second and
third was D. Mabilu.
The first prize in the 21km men’s race was
R10 000.
Athletics Limpopo will be hosting a
Mayor’s 15km Road Race on 11 December
2010. All local athletes are welcome to
enter. The event will take place at the new
Peter Mokabo Stadium. Enquiries: Event

Investment project. The project commenced in
February this year and is due for completion by
early 2011. The construction company has
experienced many challenges with the project to
date, one of these is the theft of leveling poles,
and this undermines progress of the progress.
Both the contractor and the Community Liaison
