Spring 2019 IME 524: Descriptive Statistics

Homework 5 (Ch 10)

Due date: March 25, 2019 (In-class paper submission)

(Problem 1: 6 x 3 = 18 points). Answer the following theory questions in our own words, and
based on your understanding (Don’t copy from the textbook or the slides). Limit the number of
words to each of the questions below to 35 (Shorter answers are appreciated)
a. Why are the parameters 𝛽0 and 𝛽1 uncertain? Why do we have confidence intervals?
b. What is a correlation coefficient?
c. What does Pearson correlation coefficient measure?
d. What is the coefficient of determination?
e. Why is the model prediction uncertain? Why do we have confidence intervals (for the
mean prediction and the overall prediction)?
f. Why is the difference between the confidence intervals of the mean prediction and the
overall prediction?

(Problem 2: 82 points) A blood pressure measurement consists of two numbers: the systolic
pressure, which is the maximum pressure taken when the heart is contracting, and the diastolic
pressure, which is the minimum pressure taken at the beginning of the heartbeat. Blood pressure
values were measured for a sample of 8 adults; the data are given below.
Systolic Diastolic
134 87
115 83
113 77
123 77
119 69
118 88
130 76
116 70

(a) Compute the least-square fit simple regression model between diastolic and systolic
pressures. (Have systolic pressure as the independent variable and diastolic pressure as the
dependent or the response variable) [16 points]

(b) Compute the variance in the estimates of the regression parameters (𝛽̂0 and 𝛽̂1) [6 points]
(c) Obtain a good estimate of the variance of the random error [8 points]
(d) Obtain the Pearson correlation coefficient, 𝑟 [8 points]
(e) Compute the coefficient of determination, and verify if it is the square of the Pearson
correlation coefficient [8 points]
(f) Compute a 90% confidence interval of the mean prediction of diastolic pressure at a systolic
pressure of 120 [8 points]
(g) Compute a 90% confidence interval of the overall prediction of diastolic pressure at a systolic
pressure of 120 [8 points]
(h) Perform a one-tail hypothesis testing to test the hypothesis that the systolic and diastolic
pressures are independent to each other (Use 𝛼 = 0.05)[8 points].
(i) Compute the p-value for the computed sample statistic (𝑇𝑐 ) in (h) [6 points].
(j) If the systolic pressures of two people differ by 10 units, by how much would you have
predicted their diastolic pressures differed? (Use point values of the mean predictions) [6 points]

(Note: You cannot use any software applications. All the calculations need to be shown on
paper. Failure to do so will result in a zero score.)
