• Geographic base-maps at a scale 1:25.000 based on digital maps of Bakosurtanal;

• Thematic maps on economic, social, environmental and cultural conditions and trends,
supported by tables, diagrams, photographs and explanatory text;
• Infrastructure maps of locations of infrastructure facilities, networks coverage and service
areas, supported by tables, diagrams, photographs and explanatory text;
• Organization charts of government agencies responsible for development planning,
implementation, operation and maintenance and service delivery;
• Reference list of the original sources of data to facilitate further inquiries by the user of the
Atlas, as well as future updating of the information.

Gunungkidul is one of the five regencies of the Special Province of Yogyakarta. It is
located between 70 46’– 70 09’ Latitude and 1100 21’ – 1100 50’ Longitude. The capital of
Gunungkidul Regency is Wonosari which is located 39 km from the capital of the Special
Province of Yogyakarta. Total Area of Gunungkidul Regency is 1485,36 km² divided into 18
Sub-districts, 144 Villages, and 1431 Hamlets.

• The Regency of Gunungkidul has hilly topographic condition, half of its region has slope area of 2 - 15 %
more than 15%, on its northern zone (Baturagung Mountain Range) and in the west, south, and
15 - 40 %
east zones (Seribu Mountain Range). Only the middle zone is relatively plain and called
Wonosari Plateau, consisting of the sub-districts Wonosari, Playen, Semanu, Karangmojo and 38% 33% > 40 %
part of Paliyan.
• The elevation of this region is varied from 0 m above sealevel in the shore, 100 - 400 m above
the sea level in the karst region of Seribu Mountain range, 100 - 200 m above sea level in the
Ledok Wonosari zone and 400 - 800 m above sealevel in the Baturagung Mountain range.

Geology
• The geological condition of Gunungkidul Regency is influenced by the existence of the karst of Seribu Mountain Range.
Approximately 74% of the region is of Kepek formation of limestone. On the west part that borders Bantul, there are folded zones
(zona patahan) that also become physical hindrance to access to Gunungkidul Regency. On the north zone (Baturagung Mountain
Range), there are geological formations of andesite (Gunungwungkal, Wuni, Semilir, Nglangran and Mandalika).
• The physiography of this region consists of Seribu Mountain Range, Ledok Wonosari (Wonosari Plateau), Oyo Valley, Baturagung
Mountain Range and Panggung Masif.
The type of soil is Mediterania found in Seribu Mountain Range, Grumusol in the Ledok Wonosari (Wonosari Plateau) and Panggung
Masif, Latosol dan Rendsina in the Baturagung and Oyo Valley.

Ecology
• The ecologically conserved area includes Seribu Mountain Range (as natural conservation area). The conservation of forests covers
the area that borders Bantul Regency, Baturagung zone bordering with Klaten Regency and Panggung Masif Zone bordering Wonogiri
Regency; riverbank areas, particularly Oyo River and the coastal line; as well as the area seriously impacted by natural disasters
(erosion, landslide and drought).
• The karst area in Gunungkidul probably is the most complicated one in Indonesia. This area is full of ecological functions such as the
protection of various kinds of insects, reptiles (snakes), birds (swallow and bats). It is rich with natural beautiful horizontal or vertical
caves, an underground river and white-sand shores.
• The agriculture area in the Wonosari Plateau Zone. Within this zone, there is also an important forest used for research called
Wanagama developed by the Faculty of Forestry Gadjah Mada University since 1960.

There are various minerals (mining materials Class-C) in Gunungkidul Regency. The amount of its
deposits is not known yet. The are some problems, namely:
1. The mining is conducted on a micro-scale management. It causes serious environmental
impacts.
2. The knowledge and technology are limited.
3. The added value is low.
Opportunities:
1. The deposit of minerals is quite high.
2. There are captive markets.
The value-added minerals exploited in Gunungkidul Regency are economically low considering that
most of them are processed to become half-finished goods, for industries outside of the Special
Province of Yogyakarta (particularly to East Java).

The GDP from Trade, Hotel and Restaurants in Gunungkidul

Regency during the period of 1993 -1997 showed an increasing
trend. In 1993 the GDP from this sector was Rp 73.2 billion and in
1997 it grew up to Rp 99.9 billion. However, between 1998 and
2000, there was a decline. In 2000, the contribution of this sector
to GDP was Rp 99.4 billion. Then, in 2002 it increased to Rp
107billion. In 2002, the contribution of this sector to the GDP

Health
The essential standardized health facilities in Gunungkidul Regency have been spread-out
evenly over the sub-districts, but the quality of service is inadequate. The concentration of
qualified health services is still focused in the urban center. This is due the low accessibility of
the rural areas compared to the urban area. The service equipment such as medical tools
and medical experts are still limited to the urban area, and not yet to the rural areas. In 2001,
there are approximately 1,662 health facilities, with its ratio to the population of 1:451. There
are approximate 509 paramedics, with the ratio to the population of 1: 1,473.

Culture
As one of the cultural preservation areas with regards to its historical
value, this region is very important to be conserved in the efforts to
sustain the development of cultural history and human civilization. The
cultural assets in Gunungkidul Regency include the artifacts of the
classical period, the Islamic period, and the historical period in the forms
of menhir, sarcophagus, and megalithic structures. At least up to this
moment, there are 48 historical sites and 11 villages cultural-based
assets. Those historical sites are located on the riverbanks and rice fields
in the sub-districts of Karangmojo, Wonosari, Semanu and Tepus. Yet,
the current conservation activities have not been done optimally, causing
the loss of cultural assets and sites as well, even they are not placed
where they are supposed to. This is due to the lack of the education and
awareness of the community about the conservation of their cultural
assets.
The value system of Gunungkidul community is popularly known as

guyub rukun. Several potentials and constraints in the cultural aspect are
as follows:
• The local custom of an agrarian traditional society is still strong, this
should not become constraints for development, but in several
areas it will reduce the level of motivation for development.
• The attention towards the development of cultural potentials is still
minimal. Due to the homogenous cultural assets, it is necessary to
see the uniqueness of the potential cultural assets to be “sold” for
cultural events and tourism. Those potentials are:
- Physical cultural assets having not been used optimally,
such as the cultural sites of Sokoliman, Munggur, Gunung
Abang, Gedangan, Ngasinan, Ngawis Singkar, Wareng,
Candi Ngawis, Kepil, Plembutan, Bleberan, Beji and original,
traditional houses.
- Unique, non-physical cultural assets include: the traditional
arts of gejog lesung, campursari, shalawatan, reog, and

Roads and Transportation

The road networks have been provided in all parts of Gunungkidul Regency, but National and Provincial roads are relatively in good condition and are
not all road types are in good condition. There are approximately 246.13 Km of well maintained, while the condition of local roads varies. The road

The drainage system is still centralized in the City of Gunungkidul and in the sub-
district capitals. There are two types of drainage channels, namely lined and un-lined 300
drains (closed and open). Most of the drainage channels are connected to the road 200

Solid Wastes Management

The solid waste management system in Gunungkidul Regency is still focused in the urban area of
Wonosari, serving approximately 16% of the urban population of 435,825 persons. The total solid waste
production is estimated at 981 m3/day. With the existing equipment, the UPTD Persampahan (Solid Wastes Final Disposal Site Wukirsari
Management Unit) can handle only 158 m3/day. The existing solid waste management system only covers
the urban agglomeration of Wonosari and some other sub-districts (as presented in the map) such as
dense settlements, markets, commercial areas, tourism areas, and hospitals. The solid waste handling in
the areas that do not need off-site solid waste management will become the responsibility of the local
community using the on-site system.
