engineering problems

 Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural science and engineering sciences to wide

practical procedures and practices to solve ill-defined engineering problems.

 Perform procedural design of ill-defined components, systems, works, products or

processes to meet desired needs within applicable standards, codes of practice and
legislation.

 Conduct investigations of ill-defined problems through locating and searching

relevant codes and catalogues, conducting standard tests, experiments and
measurements.

 Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with engineering audiences.

 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the impact of engineering activity on

the society, economy, industrial and physical environment, and address issues by
defined procedures.

8.5 Submission of assignments

A major step to the successful completion of your Industrial Project IV is the

appointment of your mentor. You are responsible for appointing your own mentor
according to the guidelines given in the study guide. You must submit (the attached form
with your mentor’s details and project proposal.

8 April If you registered between December 2018 and April 2019

2019

Your mentor may be contacted and interviewed to determine his suitability. Care should
thus be taken with this appointment. Your assignments must be signed by your mentor
before sending them to UNISA.
Should we not approve of your mentor or project proposal, you will be asked to make
another appointment or define another field of study.
No assignment will be marked before the appointment of a suitable mentor.
For detailed information and requirements as far as assignments are concerned, see the
brochure my Studies @ Unisa that you received with your study material.

To submit an assignment via myUnisa:

 Go to myUnisa.
 Log in with your student number and password.
 Select the module.
 Click on assignments in the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.
 Click on the assignment number you wish to submit.
 Follow the instructions.

8.6 The assignments

For INDUSTRAL PROJECT IV, you are required to correspond with UNISA as follows:

1. Mentor appointment and Project Proposal

2. Literature Review, Theoretical study and problem definition

3. Conceptual Study

4. Detailed Design

5. Experimental Evaluation (Will count 30% of the final mark)

6. Final Report (Bound copy including CD with power Point presentation)

Submission of the mentor appointment and project proposal, allows you to hand in
the rest of your assignments.
Ensure that you understand this principle. Failure to submit the mentor appointment
and project proposal by the due date, will result in you being barred from continuing
with the rest of the subject. and you will have to reregister. If in doubt, contact your
lecturer before the submission date!!!!
Refer to the report writing guidelines in the study guide before writing your
reports.
ALL FIVE ASSIGNMENTS IN TABLE 1 ARE COMPULSORY, and your year mark will
be based on them as follows:

YEAR MARK = ASSIGNMENT 1 + ASSIGNMENT 2 + ASSIGNMENT 3 + ASSIGNMENT 4 + ASSIGNMENT 5

(see Table 1 for the weights of each assignment)

It is clear that you have to submit ALL assignments to gain a satisfactory year mark.
* Complete the assignment cover fully and CORRECTLY.
* Make sure that all the papers of the assignment are stapled together.
* KEEP A COPY OF YOUR ASSIGNMENTS AND FINAL REPORT. This is
important as assignment get lost in the mail.

Your year mark will only make up 20% of your final mark, but you should get at least 50%
for your year mark in order to be allowed to submit your final report.

Plan your programme so that your correspondence can reach the UNISA before or on
the set dates:
The final report serves as the basis for your examination. It will be evaluated by your
UNISA supervisor and a moderator in accordance with the evaluation criteria as set out
in the study guide after which a preliminary mark will be given.

The oral presentation will be a presentation lasting between 30 and 45 minutes. The
examination panel will consist of your mentor and either one or both an examiner and a
11
moderator. This examination will take place in any one of the major centres of the country
at a mutually acceptable time and place. Questions will centre around your particular
design project including the design philosophy behind your design. A final examination
mark will be decided upon by the panel at the conclusion of the oral examination.

Your final mark for the subject will consist of 20% of your year mark and 80% of your
examination mark.

Your final report must be compiled as follows:

You need to submit 2 bound copies and a compact disk (CD) that contains a soft
copy of your presentation and final report via the Assignment Department.
Presentations will only be arranged once your UNISA marker has approved your
final report. Remember to sign the declaration of own work and that your mentor
signs off your work. If you do not have your UNISA supervisor’s contact details
contact Ms L Visser on 011 471 2854 or lvisser@unisa.ac.za.

Include the following in your bound copies (on 1 page)

Contact details:
Name: Surname:
Student No:
Subject Code:
Can you graduate at the end of this year if you pass all the Modules you have registered
for? Yes/no
If yes at which institution

LIST THEORY SUBJECTS KNOWLEDGE THAT WILL BE APPLIED IN YOUR

PROJECT
Your powerpoint presentations should include:
On overview of your project
Photos and/or videos
Specify your work done
Which subjects theory was applied in your project
Problems encountered

NB! How many hours did you spend on the project and how was this spent.

Industrial Project 4 needs at least 360 hours.

Thanks for all the interesting projects. They are being marked by subject specialists.

12
IPR4701/101/0/2019

Please note: If you qualify from another institution, a lecturer from that
institution must be involved as a moderator for your project. You have
to contact the institution from which you will receive your qualification,
to moderate and sign off your final report.
