Core Subject Description:
The course introduces the learners to basic
understanding of media and information as
channels of communication and tools for the
development of individuals and societies. It
also aims to develop students to be creative
and critical thinkers as well as responsible
users and competent producers of media
and information.

LEGAL BASIS OF MEDIA AND
INFORMATION LITERACY
• 1. The 1987 Philippine Constitution
• Article 2 Section 5- The maintenance of
peace and order , the protection of LIFE,
LIBERTY AND PROPERTY ... are
essential for the enjoyment by all the
people of the blessings of democracy.

• 2. Section 11- The state values the dignity


of every human person and guarantees
full respect for human rights.

• Article III- Section 3- The privacy of
communication and correspondence
shall be inviolable except upon lawful
order of the court or when public safety
or order requires otherwise as prescibed
by law.

• Section 7- The right of the peple to


information on matters of public concern
shall be recognized.
THE USE OF MEDIA LITERACY
IN CLASSROOM
• WHAT IS MEDIA EDUCATION?

• -it is the process through which


individuals become media literate and
able to critically understand the nature,
techniques and impacts of media
messages and production.
THE PURPOSE OF MEDIA
EDUCATION
• 1. It acknowledges and builds on the positive, creative
and pleasurable dimensions of popular culture.

• 2. It incorporates production of media texts and critical


thinking-decoding, analyzing, synthesizing, and
evaluating media.

• 3. To help learners navigate through an increasingly


complex media landscape. That landscape includes not
only traditional and digital media but also popular culture
text such as toys, fashion, shopping malls, etc.
MEDIA LITERACY
• WHAT IS MEDIA LITERACY?
• -It is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and create
media in a variety of forms.

• -It provides a framework to access, analyze and


evaluate and create messages in a variety of forms.

• -It builds an understanding of the role of media in


society as well as essential skills of an inquiry and self-
expression necessary for citizens of a democracy.
THINGS TO CONSIDER
IN MEDIA EDUCATION
• Media education encourages an approach that is
always posing questions such as:

• 1. Who is the audience of a media production and why?

• 2. From whose perspective is a story being told?

• 3. How do the unique elements and codes of a specific


genre affect what we see, hear or read?

• 4.How might different audiences interpret the same


media production.
RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY OF
VISUAL INFORMATION
• Visual information are generally reliable
and valid since they are posted publicly
for public information which purpose is not
only to inform people but to guide the
researching public.

• However, minimal errors are seen but it's


up for the consuming researcher to
analyze whether it is of use or not to the
person relying on the information.
CURRENT TRENDS IN MEDIA
INFORMATION
Slouching toward the ordinary: Current trends in Computer-mediated
Communication.

Computer-mediated Systems as compared with previous


communication technologied are cheap, fast, and democratic. As
such, their popularity continous to grow . Examples of which are:

1. ICQ- I seek you


2. IM- Instant messaging
3. SMS-Short messaging Service
4. Web Logs-Blogs
