QUESTIONS
1. Outline the significance, synthesis, structure, application, properties of Kevlar in 600
words. (Include Pictures, cite the references)
2. Outline the significance, properties and applications of man-made composite in
automotive and aeronautical industry (Include Pictures, cite the references)
3. Discuss the prospects of adopting rain water harvesting as a viable option to meet
increasing water demand
4. Write a note on biodegradable electronics and how will you relate the development of
biodegradable electronics on the reduction of e-waste (electronic waste)?
5. Write a detailed note on polymer Nano composites for aeronautical applications.
6. Compare the nanotechnology developments in 1990 and 2019 with some examples (smart
materials developments, biomedical, etc).
7. How will you contribute to save water and environment (water usage, rain water harvest,
water recycling, controlling the food and land field waste)?
8. Consider a badminton shuttle cock is made of a polymer, whose glass transition
temperature Tg= 35 ̊C, melting point = 200 – 260 ̊C and density = 1.04. This shuttle cock’s
life will always be longer during summer but needs frequent replacement in winter. Why?
9. Describe the working principle and mechanism of domestic water purifiers (like
Aquaguard) in detail
10. Explain the principle and operation of a cell phone battery
11. Give reasons for the following
a. Ocean going ships are connected with Magnesium blocks
b. Paper pins inside books always suffers corrosion
c. Window metal bars inside the walls corrode faster
d. Steel pipe connected to plumbing suffers corrosion
e. An equipment made out of copper should not possess any steel connections
12. Discuss the biomedical applications of thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers.
13. List out the names of batteries (including type of electrodes, electrolyte etc) employed in
different appliances which you use in day to day life. Classify them either as rechargeable
or non-rechargeable with tabulating their characteristics like power, cycle life, voltage etc.
14. Imagining no chemicals provided, consider designing a battery. Explain in detail the
mechanism, construction and working. (Clue: Lemon)
15. Discuss in detail how polymers have played their role in sports
16. Debate whether polymers is a boon or a curse in the field of agriculture
17. Discuss the Mechanical behavior of polymers
18. Discuss the role of fluorocarbons in polymers
19. What properties of nanoscale materials make them unique and widely useful?

20. Dev’s trip to Dandak

Dev, an engineering student from Residency University had recently visited to Kutumsar
and Dandak Caves in Chattisgargh district with his friends.
He was amazed by the strange
needle like rocks hanging from
the caves and took a picture
(right). His tour guide said they
are a rare type of caves called as
“Stalactite Caves”. He also
noticed a small pond within that
cave, and collected that water in
a bottle. He was curious to know
about the needle like structures
and the nature of water present in
the caves.

Q.1 → What are those needle like structures in the caves and how are they
formed?

After exploring the caves that day, he got exhausted and became very hungry. He went to
a nearby café and gorged only batata vadas and bajjis as meal. Consequently, that evening
he got severe acidity. He called his mother and complained about his acidity. His mother
asked him to drink a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda. Immediately, he followed
his mother’s advice and within an hour he got relieved from the stomach acidity.

Dev’ s wanted to know the nature of water he collected form the cave. So he gave the
sample he collected to his brother, who is working in Karnataka state pollution control
board. Within 2 days he got the following result:
Volume 200 ml
1. pH 9.7
Q.3 → What is the hardness of water 2. CaCO3 300.5 mg
sample that Dev collected from the cave? 3. MgCl2 54.1 mg
4. MgSO4 34.1 mg
5. MgCO3 78 mg

Q.2 → How a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda did relived Dev’s acidity?
