Rise and Fall of Governments Timeline

This Assignment Will Use: Timetoast

Instructions
1. Each student should still be in the same group they were in for the ‘Compare and Contrast
Political Systems Activity.’ In this project, you will be working with the same group
members and each group will be working with the same political system they selected for
that activity.
2. Each group will choose a country that has had a government based on the political system
they chose. A list of suggestions is provided below.
a. Absolute monarchy – France, Saudi Arabia, Russia
b. Constitutional monarchy – United Kingdom (Britain), Japan, Thailand
c. Direct Democracy – Ancient Athens, Switzerland
d. Representative Democracy – United States, United Kingdom (Britain), India
e. Socialism – Canada, Norway, Venezuela
f. Communism – Soviet Union, China, Poland
g. Fascism – Germany, Italy, Japan
3. You may select a different country that is not on the list if you wish to. However, that
country must be approved by me beforehand as a viable alternative.
4. Each group will be performing research on the history of the government based on that
political system in each country. The research should include:
a. How that government came to power
b. What have been some important actions of that government while it was in power
c. Important events related to the government
d. Important people in the history of that government
e. The structure of that government
f. How the government either fell or remained in power
5. The following resources are some recommendations of where you can find information. You
should use at least 3 different resources from different websites:
a. The Unit Resources Page on the Unit Website: This provides many links with
information on the political systems we have examined. Some links include the
histories of certain governments. Depending on your country, this may be useful.
b. Wikipedia: Wikipedia is a good starting point for your research. You can use it to find
other links and resources that might be useful. All your sources should NOT be
Wikipedia pages.
c. Encyclopedia Brittanica: This site is also good for articles that provide an overview of
various topics, including political systems and histories of countries.
d. Crash Course World History: The videos on this playlist can provide plenty of
information on various countries at different points in time.
6. If you find any other resources you wish to use, please consult with me to get approval for
using that source. You can use other online or non-online resources, such as books you find
in the school library. Just make sure you have my approval before you use them as sources
for this project.
7. Each group will then produce a timeline using the information they found as part of their
research. Students will use Timetoast to create the timeline.
8. The timeline should include:
a. The date of the creation of the government and how it was created
i. The events and people involved in the creation of the government should be
included in the timeline.
b. If the government fell, the date that it ended and how it fell
i. If the government fell, the events and people involved in the fall of the
government should be included in the timeline
c. If the government is still in power, list the current date and indicate how it is still in
power.
i. If the government is still in power, list the events and people that have kept
the government in power, including the person currently in charge of the
government.
d. At least 8 important events or actions taken by that government in its history (the rise
or fall of that government can both count towards this number)
e. At least 2 important people in the history of that government
f. At least 6 images for events or actions and 2 images of important people
g. All items on the timeline must be arranged in proper order chronologically
9. Each group will present their completed timeline to the rest of the class. All students from the
group must participate in the presentation
