oT IGT Deck SkillsMessage to readers
Working on-leck safely is everyone’ s objective. Typically, seamen learn practical
seamanship and various kinds of repair work from their seniors, mainly through
on board working. In order to help learn and teach such skills effeetively, we
have published this guidebook, which is aimed primarily at deck cadets, deck
crew, and students who want to become seamen.
‘The contents of this guide
nclude rope work, and types of splices and repair
works used by Japanese deck seamen, We thought that it would be useful in this,
guide to describe some of the more traditional skills of Japanese seamen. This
guide book will also be useful for officers in planning and supervising deck jobs.
If deck crews and officers increase their knowledge and skills, the performance
and effectiveness of deck work will improve, adding to safety and helping to
reduce operational costs. This guide seeks to help you build upon your existing
skills and abilities, and help you become a better seaman.
The skills covered
n the book cannot always be easily understood through
r this reason we have been very liberal in the number of
photos and illustrations used to support the text. We also have available an
accompanying VIDEO TAPE, which shows how to make an eye splice and how
to work aloft safely.
