• In 2003 the uk and surrounding countries experienced one of the worst heat waves in
recorded history resulting tens of thousands of deaths (2000 in the uk alone).
• Areas in the uk such as Brogdale in Kent hit 38.5 degrees Celsius on august tenth
2003.
• Scientists claim this will be a common occurrence in summer come 2040.
• This will primarily afect hospitals and elderly care homes resulting in the deaths of
our most vulnerable
• Larger cities containing large buildings and asphalt streets that absorb and radiate
heat will be afected more than rural areas. This is called urban heat island efect.
• Heat related mortalities may rise by 70% by 2020 when compared to the 2000s
according to HPA projects. BY 2080 they believe it may even hit 540% if no action is
taken.
• This will put a lot of strain on the NHS
VECTOR-BORNE DISEASES
• Rising temperatures will spread diseases further than ever before, even to the uk
• As the temperatures rises vectors disease carrying insects will be able to travel
further and further.
• “Risks from new and emerging pests and diseases, and invasive non-native
species, are potentially very high for people, animals and the natural
environment. The warmer conditions expected with climate change will allow
some pests, disease-carrying insects and other animals, and invasive non-native
species, to extend their range.” says the 2017 CCC report.
• An example of this is the Asian tiger mosquito, which can carry the Chikungunya
virus, dengue fever, and Zika virus.
• Another efect of vectors is the heightening reproduction and growth rates
leading to and as a result increases the infection rate.
FLOODING AND DROUGHT
• Two key factors of the global water cycle:
• It’s an extremely interconnected so every change no matter how small has a
ripple efect on the rest of the cycle
• All steps of the cycle is changed and afected by heat and temperature
• The steady rise in temperature in the past few hundred years has afected
everything from clouds to stream fow patterns
• This afects the entire world including the uk
• Diferent parts of the uk’s weather has gone in two directions. Either the
abundance of rainfall or the lack of it. This leads to fooding and droughts.
• If the climate rises a mere 4 degrees the number of uk residences at an extreme
food risk will double from around 900,000 to 1.9 million by 2050.
• This rise in heat will also reduce the amount of usable water in much of the
country.
RISING SEA LEVELS:
• The UK Climate Projections of 2009 estimated a sea-level
rise of between 13cm and 76cm for the UK by 2095.
• "extreme high sea-level events" could become between 10
and 1,800 times more common by 2100 on the south coast
of england.
• Areas that have been identifed as particularly vulnerable
to coastal food risk include South Wales, north-west
Scotland, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, East Anglia and the
Thames estuary.
• According to the bbc beaches may be lost in a hundred
years at this current trajectory.
