1. You may have the mass unit slug in previous engineering or physics courses.

What is the relation between pound mass and slug? Is the slug a conversion of
mass unit?
A pound can be seen to be the force required to accelerate 1 slug of mass at 1 ft/s2.
Since the acceleration of gravity in US common units is 32.2 ft/s2, it follows that the
weight of 1 slug is 32.2 lbm. The slug is a unit that is not met with in everyday life,
and hence its use in physics tends to confuse and mystify the students that is why
slug is not a convenient unit.
2. If the system is at a steady state, does this mean that intensive properties are
uniform with position throughout the system or constant with time? Both
uniform and constant with time? Explain.
In a steady state system, the intensive properties remain constant in time but not
uniform in position throughout the system.
3. When one walks barefoot from a carpet into ceramic tile floor, the tiles feel
colder than the carpet even though each system is at the same temperature.
Explain.
Every material has a property known as heat conductivity that tells you how good
that material is at conducting heat. When you touch an object, it will remove heat
from your hand at a rate proportional to its conductivity. In other words, it’s all
about the rate at which it can conduct heat. Carpet is mostly air and air is a poor
conductor of heat. Wood is solid, so it is a better conductor. Tile and metal are
even better conductors than wood. When you touch the carpet, it is not able to
remove heat from your feet as easily as wood, and as a result, it feels warmer.
Conversely, wood or tile or metal is able to remove heat from your foot very easily,
and so it feels colder.
4. Are the systolic and diastolic pressure reported in pressure measurements
absolute, gage, or vacuum pressure.
They're gage pressures measured in units of mmHg.
5. How does a pressure measurement of 14.7 psig differ from a pressure
measurement of 14.7 psia?
G in psig is stands for gauge and a is stands for absolute. PSIG is the pressure
read from a gauge which reads the difference between the pressure in the pipe
and the pressure of the atmosphere .PSIA is the total pressure or absolute pressure
including the pressure of the atmosphere.
6. Suggest a system, boundary, and boundary, and surroundings for 10 moles of
propane gas in a rigid metal cylinder.
One choice is that the 10 moles of propane gas constitute the system, the metal
cylinder and everything outside of it the surroundings, and the inside walls of the
cylinder a real boundary. This is an appropriate way to study the properties of the
gas alone.
7. Describe three common place examples of how work is done on or by a system.
Compression of a spring : If the spring is the system, work is done on the system
by the surroundings to compress the spring.
Compression of the mixture in an automobile engine: if the gas mixture is the
system, work is done on the system by the surroundings to compress the gas
Muscle contraction: as the muscle contracts, work is done on the surroundings.
Both mechanical and electrical work are involved as well as chemical processes.
8. Describe the internal energy change and work performed when a spring is
compressed or expanded.
Work is done on the system by the surroundings to compress the spring. The
compressed spring has a greater capacity to do work than the uncompressed
spring. In each case, the internal energy of the system is increased by the amount of
work done on it.
∆U > 0 and ∆U = Ufinal − Uinitial = w
Therefore, w > 0 when work is done on the system.
Work is done on the surroundings by the system to expand the spring. The expanded
spring has a lesser capacity to do work than the unexpanded spring. The internal
energy of the system is decreased by the amount of work done by it.
∆U < 0 and ∆U = Ufinal − Uinitial = w
Therefore, w < 0 when work is done by the system.
9. Describe the internal energy change and work performed when a battery is
recharged.
Electrical work is done on the system by the surroundings in recharging a battery.
The charged battery has a greater capacity to do work than the discharged battery.
The internal energy of the system is increased by the amount of work done on it. As
in the case of mechanical work, w > 0 when electrical work is done on the system.
