FORM
The infinitive of a verb has two forms:
• the to-infinitive (full infinitive)
• the infinitive without to (bare infinitive)
FORM
The to-form consists of
“to” plus the base form
of the verb:
• I want to speak to you.
• We came here to work,
not to play.

The form without to (bare
infinitive) consists of the base
form of the verb.
Eg:
• The teacher came late and
made us wait for half an
hour.
• The teacher let her students
do the test with pencils.
We use the infinitive without to after

modal verbs can, could, may, might,
will, shall, would, should,
must
Eg:
• Students can do the test with both
pens and pencils.
BUT with need, we use “to”

Eg:
• Will students need to fill in the
application forms before sitting (for)
the exam?

We also use the infinitive without to after let, make,
hear, notice, see, watch and (optionally) help.
The test includes open-
ended questions and
long essay, so the
teacher lets us open our
book during the test.

Parents can’t make their
children choose the
majors they don’t like.
The teachers explained

We don’t use the infinitive

(with or without to) after
prepositions:
• Lemon juice is useful for

The verbs feel, hear, notice, see, and watch can also
be followed by –ING form.
• Infinitive without to for a completed actions ( from
the start to finish)
• ING form for an action in progress at the same
time.

Eg:
• I heard teacher tell student a story. (heard all of it)
• I heard teacher telling the student a story. ( I heard
part of it)
In the passive, hear, make, see are followed by infinitive
with to (full infinitive).
Eg:
• The teacher made me stand in the corner of the class.
• I was made to stand in the corner of the class.

Exercise 1: Correct the sentences using the infinitive without
to
1. My mom never lets me to go out late at night.
-> lets me go
2. I heard Miss Joana to tell her neighbor a strange story.
-> heard Miss Joana tell/ telling
3. The teacher made me doing all of the homework.
-> made me do
