T: Good morning students.

S: Good morning sir.

T: How are you today?

S: I’m fine, thank you and you?

T: I’m very well, thank you.

T: I hope you’re all ready for today’s lesson because we are going to learn an interesting topic.

S: What is it sir?

T: Before I answer that, I’ll show you a video

(Plays a video)

S: (Students watching video)

T: So, what do you think we are going to learn today?

S: Global warming? Climate change?

T: Yes that’s right, we are going to learn about global warming and climate change.

S: Yes sir.

T: Okay, before we start I want to ask you something.

S: What is it sir?

T: Do you feel that lately the weather feels hotter than a few years ago?

S: Yes sir, we feel that it is hotter.

T: And do you notice that the weather is also changing unstably? Like the weather is really
unpredictable. From May to September it should be dry season and from October to April it
should be rainy season, but sometimes in May we still encounter some heavy rains and in
November the sun may still shine brightly for a few days.

S: Yes sir, we notice that too.

T: Good, so you are quite aware about our planet situation. Do you what causes those changes?

S: No sir, we don’t know.

T: Are you sure? I’ve showed you a video about it.

S: It’s global warming sir.

T: Pretty good, you’re right. Global warming is causing climate change in our planet earth.

S: Yes sir.

T: Now I’m going to ask you, what do you think about global warming after watching that
video?

S: Our earth is getting hotter sir.

T: Yes, correct.

S: Thank you sir.

T: So basically, global warming is the process of our planet heating up. The earth has warmed by
an average of 1oC in the last century, and although that doesn’t sound like much, it means big
things for people and wildlife around the globe.

T: Anyone know what’s the effect of global warming for our planet?

S: The weather is changing unstably sir.

T: Good, so global warming is causing the weather in earth to be more extreme and
unpredictable. In other words, it’s causing climate change. Got it students?

S: Yes sir.

T: Now let’s continue. (Show a greenhouse effect picture). Have you ever heard term
“greenhouse effect” or in Bahasa “efek rumah kaca”?

S: No sir, we haven’t

T: A greenhouse is a building with glass walls and a glass roof. Greenhouses are used to grow
plants, such as tomatoes and tropical flowers.

A greenhouse stays warm inside, even during the winter. In the daytime, sunlight shines into the
greenhouse and warms the plants and air inside. At nighttime, it's colder outside, but the
greenhouse stays pretty warm inside. That's because the glass walls of the greenhouse trap the
Sun's heat.

S: Yes sir.

T: The greenhouse effect works much the same way on Earth. Gases in the atmosphere, such as
carbon dioxide, trap heat just like the glass roof of a greenhouse. These heat-trapping gases are
called greenhouse gases. During the day, the Sun shines through the atmosphere. Earth's surface
warms up in the sunlight. At night, Earth's surface cools, releasing heat back into the air. But
some of the heat is trapped by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. That's what keeps our
Earth a warm and cozy 58 degrees Fahrenheit (14 degrees Celsius), on average.

S:Sir, so what’s the relation between greenhouse effect and global warming?

T: Good question, thank you. So because of greenhouse effect is trapping carbon dioxide, it
makes out earth warm. But in a few years, the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses has
increased so much in our earth caused by human activity. If there is too much greenhouse gases
in earth it will cause the atmosphere to trap more heat causing earth to be warmer.

S: Thank you sir.

T: You’re welcome. So do you know what kind of human activity that may cause the increase in
greenhouse gasses, or to be exact causing global warming?

S: We don’t know sir.

T: Okay then, I’ll show you some pictures.

(Show a picture of car with smoke)

T: Got any idea?

S: Yes sir.

T: So for the car picture. In order to make the car works, what thing do we give to it?

S: Fuel sir.

T: Yes, pretty good. To make the car works we have to give it fuel, especially fossil fuels like
gasoline. Carbon is resulting from the process in car’s machine, and that gas is responsible for
the increase of our earth temperature. You also know that most people in the world are using car,
right?

S: Yes sir.

T: And then next picture.

(Show a picture of deforestation)

T: What is that picture about?

S: Deforestation.

T: Yes great, so do you know why deforestation also causing global warming?

S: We don’t know sir.

T: Well, you know that trees are absorbing carbon dioxide and then they process it to be oxygen
that human breath and to control the temperature of the earth. So if we cut the trees, it means that
there will be nothing that can absorb the carbon dioxide that in result causing the greenhouse
effect to be worse and heat up the temperature of the earth.

S: No sir.

T: Okay then, I’ll continue.

(Show a picture of AC and refrigerator)

T: What are those?

S: AC and refrigerator sir.

T: Yes correct. Do you use that in your house?

S: No sir. Yes sir.

T: Okay, so some of you are using AC and refrigerator in your house, do you know why they are
causing global warming?

S: No sir.

T: So AC and refrigerator are using some kind of substance called Freon and CFC that also
causing global warming.

S: Yes sir.

T: Then next cause is….

(Show a picture of cow farm)

T: Do you know what is that?

S: Cow farm, sir.

T: Yes that is cow farm. But how does cow farm causing global warming? Do you know?

S: No sir.

T: Well, cows are producing a kind of gas called methane when they process their food inside
their belly. That gas is also affecting the temperature of the earth.

S: Yes sir.

T: Okay, now we are going to learn about the effect of warmer climate to our planet.

S: Yes sir.

T: The effect of global warming to our planet are..

1. More rainfall
2. Changing seasons
3. Shrinking sea ice
4. Raising sea levels

T: Now I want you to discuss with your friend sitting beside you. Discuss about the way to
prevent global warming in our earth. After the discussion end, I want you to tell the whole
classroom about your suggestion. I give you 15 minutes.

S: Yes sir.

T: Okay time’s up. Now please tell us about your suggestion to prevent global warming.

(Point a student)

S: (Tell the suggestion)

T: Very good, thank you. Okay, now let’s summarize what we have learned today. Today we
have learned about the cause of climate change that is global warming, and the cause of global
warming and green house effect.
