    1. The plasma membrane is a selectively permeable barrier that separates the interior of cells from the outside environment. It allows some substances to pass through easily by diffusion while blocking other molecules. 2. Experiments showed that the plasma membrane is selectively permeable, allowing potassium ions and glucose to pass through test tubes containing cell membranes, but blocking larger starch molecules. 3. Diffusion experiments with methyl blue dye and potassium permanganate demonstrated that some substances can pass through the membrane more readily than others by diffusion alone, depending on their size and solubility. High salt concentrations caused red blood cells to shrivel and burst due to osmosis.
