Eduk8 Community Census 2018

Report
Eduk8 Community Census 2018 Report

General
The annual Eduk8 Community Census was collected once again in the autumn of 2018. The
overall aim of the Census is to keep track of the community members, their engagement in
training delivery, their topics of expertise and needs for further development. Every
community member was contacted to submit the form, and failing to do so automatically
resulted in the removal from the Community. There were 118 submissions in total; 2
members did not wish to continue their membership and 29 members did not submit the
census.

ESN Pools, Generations and Lifecycle

There are 3 pools in ESN: ESN Facilitators, ESN Junior Trainers, ESN Senior Trainers. The pool
of Facilitators is the biggest pool with 80 members.

70 members of the community plan to progress on the trainer lifecycle. 48 members do not
wish to progress on the lifecycle or cannot do it due to the fact that they are already trainers
or their personal life prevents them from taking the necessary steps to reach the next level.

Expertise and training

This year, we look separately at the development and involvement of the latest generation
after Eduk8 Starter Madeira 2018 and the rest of the Community since the last census
(Autumn 2017). In the following, the expertise of the two groups is taken into consideration
both time-wise (hours of training delivered) and topic-wise (topics on which the Eduk8
Community members are comfortable delivering workshops).

In total, the Eduk8 Starter Madeira 2018 generation delivered 464 hours of training in ESN
circles and 121 hours outside of ESN. An interesting fact is that most members of this
generation have already been members of ESN for more than 3 years when successfully
completing their Eduk8 Starter.

Community Engagement
The following chart illustrates how community members plan to be involved in different
events:

In order to keep the members active in the community, we also measured the willingness to
take part in possible working groups. More than 70 members would potentially take part in a
working group and from many insightful suggestions regarding the needs of the Community,
the following can be highlighted:

 Training and development opportunities (especially towards external organizations);

 Mental health in ESN and beyond;
 Knowledge sharing, materials, methods, opportunities both inside the Community and
within the Network;
 Trainers ethics;
 Financial stability, grants and sustainability of the Eduk8 Programme;
 Opening up the community to external trainers/facilitators;
 Topics related to the Council of Europe: European citizenship, youth work, human
rights, migration, gender, etc.;
 Online workshops;
 Transparency both inside and outside of the Community;

 Clear, externally understandable and recognizable structure.

The Eduk8 Community Training 2019 Brussels, happening between the 21st and 24th of
March, is partly set to explore how these fields can be developed. We aim to follow-up with
results of sessions devoted to these topics during our meeting as well as with the creation of
working groups in the most pressing fields.

Areas of development
As for future areas of development, members would like to improve their expertise in the
following topics:
 European Citizenship (external focus)
 Social Inclusion (ESN-related)
 Leadership skills as personal development
 Human Rights in the field of intercultural learning
 Mediation as a conflict management method
 Visual Communication
 Outdoor training as a training methodology
 Change management (organisational development)

This data gives us direction on developing future training events where desired topics and
fields are discussed in order the ESN Facilitators and Trainers can further develop the scope
of their expertise.

Conclusion
The annual census is the most straightforward tool we have to reach out to the Eduk8
Community. Through the survey, the members can provide us with their feedback,
communicate their insights and suggestions regarding the development of the Eduk8
Programme, which is used to build our Action Plan each year. Additionally, we use the survey
to measure the expertise and engagement of the members in order to have a clear
understanding of what they can offer to the Network and what the strengths and weaknesses
of the Eduk8 Community are. This information gives us direction when it comes to the
development of future training events.
