Q1. Kinesics behaviour, paralanguage, proximity are some aspects of Non-Verbal


Communication. Discuss all seven aspects of Non-Verbal Communication.

Answer:
Non -Verbal Communication.

Communication that is neither written nor spoken but occurs without the use of words is called non-
verbal communication. Sometimes non-verbal message contradict the verbal. They often express true
feelings more accurately that the spoken or written language.

Different Aspects of Non-Verbal Communication.

1. Body movement (kinesics behavior)

4. Vocal qualities (paralanguage)
5. Space (proximity)

7. Environment

1. Kinesics behavior:

“Communication through body movement”.


The most studied sub area of non-verbal communication is kinesics or body language. In other words it
is the way body communicates without the words that is through various movements of its parts
sometimes they are more meaningful then words. The communication through facial expressions,
gestures and postures is categorized into kinesics.

• Facial Expressions:
The eyes and face are especially helpful means of communicating non-verbally. They can
reflect hidden emotions, anger, confusion, enthusiasm, fear, hatred, joy, love, sorrow and
surprise. The person whose eyes shift away from the listener is thought to be shy, dishonest and
untrustworthy.

• Gestures and Posture:


It is said that “Action speaks louder then words”
Often deaf people communicate silently by the hands and finger movements. Clenched fists
poundings on table may indicate anger. Continual gestures with arm while speaking may signal
nervousness. Posture conveys impressions of self confidence, status and interest.

2. Physical characteristics:

Physical characteristics such as body shape, general attractiveness, body and breathe odors,
weight, hair and skin color are important parts of nonverbal communication. Personal appearance and
the appearance of surroundings affect attitudes and emotions. Clothing, jewelry and hair styles are the
part of the personal appearance. They can convey impressions regarding occupation age, sex, nationality
and job status. The envelope’s overall appearance size, color, weight, postage may impress the receiver.
