Assignment 5
Answer all the questions

1. A hydroelectric power plant having 80 sq. km reservoir area and 100 m head is used to
generate power. The energy utilized by the consumers whose load is connected to the
power plant during a three hour period is 11 X 104 kWh. The overall generation efficiency is
80%. Find fall in height of water in reservoir after the three hour period.
2. In a thermal power plant which uses a Rankine cycle, superheated steam is produced at 3
MPa and 300°C and fed to the turbine where it expands to the condenser pressure of 4 kPa.
The saturated liquid coming out of the condenser is compressed to the boiler pressure by a
pump with isentropic efficiency of 0.8. Calculate the thermal efficiency of the power plant if
the isentropic efficiency of the turbine is 0.85. Determine the rate of steam production if the
power output of the plant is 1 MW. Also calculate the efficiency corresponding to ideal
Rankine cycle.
3. An open cycle gas turbine power plant uses heavy diesel oil. The maximum pressure ad
temperature in the cycle are 5 atm and 700°C. The pressure and temperature of the air
entering the compressor are 1 atm and 27°C. The exit pressure of the turbine is also 1 atm.
Assuming the isentropic efficiencies of compressor and turbine as 80%, find the thermal
efficiency of the cycle. The overall A:F ratio used is 50:1. Take Cp for air and gas as 1 kJ/kgK
and γ = 1.4. If the plant consumes 6 kg of fuel per second, find the power generating
capacity of the plant.
4. A thermal power plant consists of two 80 MW units each running for 6000 hours and one 30
MW unit running for 2000 hours per day. The energy produced by the plant is 900 X 106 kWh
per year. Determine plant load factor and plant use factor. Consider maximum demand is
equal to plant capacity.
5. Determine the generating cost per unit of 80 MW power station with the following data:
Capital cost = Rs.160 X 10^7 Annual cost of fuel = Rs.32 X 10^6
Annual wages and taxes = Rs.36 X 10^6 Interest and depreciation = 10% of capital cost
Annual load factor = 45% Consider maximum demand is equal to plant capacity.
6. The composition by weight of a sample of coal was found by analysis to be Carbon 87%,
hydrogen 5%, oxygen 3%, nitrogen 0.9%, sulphur 0.9% and ash 3.2%. Calculate the minimum
weight of air required for complete combustion of 1 kg of fuel.
7. A power station has to supply load as follows:
Time (hrs) 0-6 6-12 12-14 14-18 18-24
Load (MW) 45 135 90 150 75
Draw the load curve. Choose suitable generating units to supply the load and calculate the
load factor.
8. During a boiler trial the following observations were made: Duration of trial = 1 hour, steam
generated = 35500 kg, steam pressure = 12 bar, steam temperature = 250°C, temperature
off feed water entering the boiler = 77°C, oil burnt = 3460 kg, CV of oil = 39500 kJ/kg.
Calculate the equivalent evaporation per kg of fuel and thermal efficiency of plant.
