"Do you read the information on the box before you buy food in the supermarket?
In the UK, millions of people buy meals in boxes. The food is easy to prepare and ready to eat in
minutes. But sometimes there are surprises. In February 2013, there was a terrible scandal in Britain.
Many people bought lasagne, a quick and popular meal. They thought it contained only pasta, beef
and cheese, but it didn´t. It contained horse meat too! The information on the box was false.
After that, scientists checked hundreds of other foods in British supermarkets and school canteens.
What do you think they found? False information everywhere! Many ingredients didn´t appear on
the food boxes. "Beef" hamburgers also had chicken in them. Mozzarella cheese was only 50%
cheese. Some fruit juices had oil in them. Prawns, a see food similar to shrimp, contained 50% water.
Some people must be on special diets. They must be careful not to eat certain foods because these
foods can make them very ill. But how can they be careful when they don´t know what their food
really contains? This is a serious problem but, unfortunately, there is no easy solution."
